Amy Hennig Is Headed to Visceral Games

The former creative director of the Uncharted franchise will now be working on the studio's upcoming Star Wars project

Amy Hennig is the new creative director on Visceral Games' upcoming Star Wars title.

Amy Hennig has found a new home.

The former creative director and lead writer on Naughty Dog's Uncharted series has landed at EA's Visceral Games. She will once again assume the role of creative director, this time on the studio's upcoming Star Wars project.

"As both a colleague and friend, I’ve always admired [Hennig's] approach to creative development," said Visceral studio head Steve Papoutsis in a statement posted on EA's website. "Focusing on nailing down the soul of a game first, and then making sure the writing, the gameplay, the design and the art comes together to form a unified, interactive experience for the player. This fits in perfectly with what we’re trying to do here at Visceral and Amy’s going to help us continue in our pursuit to make the most thrilling, immersive games in the world."

This is actually a return to EA for Hennig. She once worked for the publisher as an artist and animator in the early '90s, before she eventually moved on to the jobs at Crystal Dynamics and Naughty Dog that would define her career.

Little is known regarding Visceral's Star Wars project. The studio will be developing it alongside multiple other games, which will come from DICE and BioWare, and though they're planned for release in the vicinity of the upcoming JJ Abrams-directed movie sequels, EA has repeatedly said that these new games won't be movie tie-ins.

Hennig has taken to Twitter today to talk about both her excitement to be "home" at EA, and the prospect on working on a franchise that heavily influenced her.

I began my career @EA almost a quarter century ago (I have the 1991 Rising Star award from @realtriphawkins to prove it - ha! ;) ...

— Amy Hennig (@amy_hennig) April 3, 2014

... It might've taken me 23 years, but I'm back - and it's good to be home @EA !

— Amy Hennig (@amy_hennig) April 3, 2014

It's a privilege to have the opportunity to contribute to the Star Wars universe, after it's had such a formative influence on my life.

Can't wait to see what they have brewing. I'm interested in seeing what they do with Hennig on board, and with a property like Star Wars.

I'm actually really looking forward to seeing what develops from this. Visceral + Amy Hennig + Star Wars could equal something very exciting.

Yes please. Say what you will about some of the design choices in Dead Space, but that series has a hell of an atmosphere and the next few years could see a resurgence of actually cool Star Wars games the likes of which we haven't seen since the early aughts. Or you know...Star Wars Habbo Hotel. Who knows at this point.

Amy is a cool dude. Visceral working on a Star Wars game seems really interesting as well. It's weird how they chose to announce both her joining and the game itself at the same time. I guess it's because she's a cool dude.

I suppose if anyone can direct a decent game from the star wars universe it could be Amy, shame she was to late there to write it I think she would have done a decent jobe of that lets hope Visceral can back it up.

Let's hope it will turn out all right. Visceral hasn't exactly been on a good run lately.

It's a bummer she left ND, but this is a really great place for her to land.

Nice. Hopefully this Star Wars game is more akin to the quality of the early Dead Space era instead of later Dead Space or Dante of War.

Great combination of things. Star Wars is still a franchise with a lot of potential, Visceral Games can crack out some phenomenal games when they want to (first two Dead Space games), and Amy Hennig is obviously a fantastic project lead.

The people that brought us amazing sci-fi aesthetics, gory decapitations and awesome atmosphere team up with someone that thoroughly understands a good story and engaging narrative.. to make a Star Wars game?

This is the best news I've heard in a long while.

@hailinel: To be honest here. I expect a lot more than just Dead Space 1 quality. And I am sure if someone can do that at this studio it is Amy^^

(Not a joke. I won't buy it unless it turns out to be a godly game. If it gets the typical EA fucking, maybe it's time for the suits to get fired. Not having high hopes.)

Well crap. Hate to see her go to EA but I wish her well. I was really hoping me personal theory was correct and she was going the new team working on Gears of War IP. I don't really care about the franchise but it seems like it could benefit from a talented writer like Amy.

I love to see Hennig be given a shot at Mirror's Edge instead of Star Wars but there is a lot for her to work on and I'm eager to see what she does.

Han Solo: Cool Bastard here we come :)

Please no. No Han Solo, no Boba Fett, no chewbacca or Darth Vader or Millenium Falcon or anything of that nature. They have an entire universe to draw from, and if they rest on their laurels and fall back on the original trilogy in anything other than aesthetics or feel, they've done it wrong. Even then, there's so much more to Star Wars that could be explored without trying to harken back to emotional ties to old movies.

Well, in the short term its nice that Amy will be working on the Star Wars project. But, I think the real win in this is that she may be on-board for any potential Dead Space resurgence. That franchise could really use her services.

@darji: Don't be so sure about that. She's a writer, not a game designer. Plenty of other factors could fuck this game even if Amy does her job well.

@darji: Considering that Dead Space 2 was just okay and 3 was very sub-par if not lower then yes, I agree with you.

Visceral's Star Wars game must be too far in production to be influenced by something like this, right? If she's going to work on something, it might just be a different game in a pre-production stage.
