"Anonymous" Deems Sony's Hacker Litigation Totally Uncool, Goes to War

If you can't connect to PSN today, it's because your strict, disciplinarian principal and that weird kid who likes making pipe bombs are having a spat.

If you are a reader of the corners of the Internet currently dedicated to the game industry, you have probably heard the many twists and turns regarding the tale of of George "GeoHot" Hotz, who, after his successful run as "the guy who jailbroke the iPhone," moved onto hacking of the PlayStation 3 firmware and getting sued by Sony for it. It's been an amusing, interesting story up to this point, with blogs frantically tracking GeoHot's out-of-country sojourns and rap video legal statements like he was the game industry's version of the Hipster Grifter, or something.

Cue teary-eyed guy sobbing
Cue teary-eyed guy sobbing "LEAVE PLAYSTATION 3 ALONE!"

Over the course of this week, this story has gotten markedly less amusing and decidedly more uncomfortable, thanks to the actions of notoriously dogged and frequently butthurt hacker group Anonymous, who put out a really adorable threatening statement declaring Sony's civil suit against GeoHot and fellow hacker Alexander "Graf_Chokolo" Egorenkov an affront to hackers everywhere, and warning that they would get their DDoS on with the PlayStation Network as a result of Sony poking their hornet's nest.

Now it appears Anonymous is making good on its threats, with a variety of reports regarding connectivity issues on the PlayStation 3 popping up all over the place. Sony, for their part, has remained relatively mum on the subject, with a moderator forum post on the European PlayStation forums simply offering up a series of known error codes, and a statement that read, "We are currently looking into this and I will update the thread as more information becomes available." Translated from legally approved corporate speak, that roughly translates to, "Uhhhhh...crap?"

== TEASER ==Oh, but that's not all. According to the blog PlayStation Lifestyle, a splinter sect of Anonymous, calling themselves "Sony Recon," has vowed to take things several ominous steps further by digging up all sorts of personal info on Sony executives and their families--including Sony bigwig Sir Howard Stringer--and doing mean stuff with it. That would include the following Internet equivalents of flaming dog crap on a doorstep:

Craigslist – Make a ad in the “free stuff” section, or in “erotic services” and “casual encounters” as is evident here there are many horny men who will relentlessly pursue someone who they believe to be 19/f.

STD Postcards – send one of these e-postcards notifying the target that one of their previous sexual partners has a STD. Makes for an uncomfortable wait for them. Alternatively call an AIDS hotline and ask them to anonymously tell the target they could have HIV, thats a 6 month wait until the test comes back.

Free UPS Boxes create an account and order the target a couple of hundred boxes & labels, fedex also offer free boxes.

Google Maps use Google maps to locate local businesses to mess with the target.

Call them:

Skype – Use skype to call the target. When you first register a skype account you get one free call…

IP Relay – Ask the operator not to announce at the start of the call. This is a service only available to people in the USA.

Things got even more surreal today when a writer for PlayStation Lifestyle was allowed into the group's inner sanctum--an IRC channel, natch--and given the opportunity to talk to a bunch of these computer-lab Tyler Durdens directly. The resulting story reads a lot like that one time that ABC reporter interviewed Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan, except like a bajilliondy times less intimidating.

What does any of this mean to you, the player of games? Well, for starters, because of some dudes with an anarchistic streak and a slightly overbearing sense of "protecting their own," you may be having some issues with getting online with your PlayStation 3. Anonymous has made it clear that they have no intention of screwing with average consumers or doing anything malicious with any hacked account information--but they pretty much already are screwing with the average consumer. Nobody within Anonymous seems to be too concerned with inconveniencing console owners, because let's face it, when hackers get on their "noble thief" high horse, consumer inconvenience comes second banana to taking down "the establishment."

Anonymous has also stated that they have no intention of messing with journalists who write about them, citing the need for free speech over any desire to control how their "message" is spread. Regardless, I just went ahead and canceled all my credit cards and changed all my passwords, just in case.

Anon already released another statement stating that they are not attacking the Playstation Network because they have no interest in inconveniencing the people they are fighting for.

The fact that we are even talking about this subject means that Anon has archived what they set out to.  It is very easy just to discard others ideals and pigeon hole people as radicals or extremists but without groups like Anonymous we would all sit here and accept the spoon feeding from large multinational corporations.
Thinking differently once in a while isn't a negative thing. We need a Ying to the corporations Yang...

For some reason as I was reading this article I think of when super heroes are portrayed as a menace to society. "Spiderman?! Somebody should stop him, taking the law into his own hands, it's not right I say!!!" Not that Anon are super heroes, but they really do like to give it to the man/Scientologists/douches.They may cause problems but it's kinda cool that they exist.

These "Anonymous" dipshits are complete human garbage. Just petty, worthless dogshit. Everybody knows right from wrong; and what they're doing is not only overtly wrong, but messes with legit gamers all over the country. These fucktards are mentally imbalanced is what they are. They fucking think they're some sort of Robin Hood; doing the mental gymnastics to justify this behavior, thinking they're, "sticking it to the man" or some BS. For something that was never meant to be hacked in the first place.
There are REAL problems in the world. There's, like, crazy civil unrest in Egypt and Libya right now. There are teachers in Wisconsin and Michigan who are fighting for their rights. Japan's living through a mini-apocalypse for christ sakes. You don't hear about these dipshits being some of the gamers contributing $1.3 million to the Red Cross via the PSN Aid for Japan theme promotion, do you? Nope - they're trying to take down the service and mess with its community. Because they can't hack their fucking game console. Boo-hoo you pieces of shit.
These guys are complete fucking failures. Them, George Hotz, and all the dipshits on Slashdot (or anywhere else on the internet) who support 'em. I hope I run into one, or more, of these guys in the future. I'll break all their fucking fingers. See how worthwhile they are to society when they can't use a goddamn keyboard. Petty, worthless nerds. Complete dipshits with nothing good to do with their time.

There is no class or thinking in this. It's really just trying to piss off Sony. It won't work but it will piss off everyone, who will in turn yell at sony.

Anonymous is a group of ignorant cry-babies with no concept of right or wrong beyond their own selfish and pathetic battles. Their inflated self-worth is second only to their detached sense of reality.

I know what you mean, but there MUST be much better ways to oppose this kinda stuff than piss off regular people. There's most likely heaps of legal ways to go about this, but all anon knows how to do is DDOS and send pizzas.
What we need is to take maybe the top 1% of their kind and group them with actual mature people so they could actually get stuff done.

Noble thief? High horse? No... they just have fucking daddy issues and can't bring themselves to do anything but pirate games and download kiddy porn illegally. It's not an iPad ladies, it isn't designed to be a million function, open platform. It used to support Linux, a half supported OS, until YOU fuckers took advantage of this and Sony basically said "THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS" and took away that functionality. And then they are trying to sue the pants off the hacker, I repeat, HACKER, as in one who manipulates and exploits computing systems to access or manipulate the systems, data, and functionality contained within and around said systems who penetrated their security systems in a way that would allow pirated material just like jail breaking your iPod or installing a torrent program on your PC. So while they get their rocks off on standing up to the system that wouldn't let them excel out of the back of their girlfriend's cousins broken down van, or get back at their rich daddies, the people they supposedly are standing up to are going to suffer because of it? What will they think of next, protecting the soldiers of the nation by telling the bad guys where they are? Oh wait, that already happened.

Look, I would be all for Jail breaking PS3's and iPads and iPods and uWhutsits, if it weren't for the fact that these things ultimately come about to, for, or because of people wanting to take advantage of a system. Maybe if pirating wasn't holding back the industry and causing some of the worst problems that gamers and developers and publishers all face, we could have nice things. But instead, these babies decide to be dicks and crash the prom just because they weren't allowed to ruin it some other way. Instead of standing up against Sony protecting it's rights and the rights of the people that bring you the entertainment you feel so goddamn entitled to (seriously, you fuckers should be shipped off with nothing to a third world, war torn country. Lets see how "entitled" you are then), you should stand up to the opposite shit, when the people who actually DO THE WORK get screwed over. Where were you during the Infinity Ward crisis? Where were you all the times developers have been screwed over by big time publishers? You want an open platform? Play games on PC, where you can make all the cool ass programs, gizmos, mods, and whatever the fuck else you want without fucking up the ecosystem, rather than attacking a console developer for making sure the system remains stable and viable.

God, I hate these kinda of people. Can you tell?

EDIT: Oh, and I went back to read the quote.
STD Postcards – send one of these e-postcards notifying the target that one of their previous sexual partners has a STD. Makes for an uncomfortable wait for them. Alternatively call an AIDS hotline and ask them to anonymously tell the target they could have HIV, thats a 6 month wait until the test comes back."

Really? AIDS? Thats disgusting. How about I call up your mom and tell her she has HIV? Almost as bad as those "God hates fags" fuckers at the funerals of goddamn soldiers.

I know quite a bit about Giant Bomb. I am a paid member and a long time user. I know the mission statement well. But, if they are going to have a header labeled "News," that news should be delivered in a news worthy manner. If they want to put "News and Opinions," or "News and Blogs" that is fine. But, it doesn't take away from the fact that the website purport itself as a "News" source.

@sopachuco13: You are technically right but this news section has always been "blog'ish". Except for Brad Nicholson, the other writers usually voice some form of opinion when writing a story.

Just to be clear, I don't have anything against Brad Nicholson. He does a good job on delivering news and I don't have to resort to other game sites as much anymore.

I really, really hope the FBI or somebody gets involved and brings these losers down hardcore. That would make an amazing story.

And yeah, these hacker idiots are all dirtbags and should go to jail for a long time. Just saying. They're ruining the industry. If they make it so I can't get a PS3 and expect it to do what Sony has built it to do, I'm going to be really mad.

4chan doing their thing again because some people don't want to pay for games (well, who does?). Move along...

Sony's policies on piracy have been rather draconian in my view, but pirates will be pirates. So Anon is just going to spout his usual "FIGHT THE MAN" spiel, Sony is going to waste a lot of money on lawsuits, and the media will lose interest while an arrest or two may take place (assuming FBI gets involved).

I mean, sure. I don't think what hackers do is excusable. But there are probably more cost-effective ways to reduce piracy, rather than wasteful public spectacles like this.

What Anonymous does is trolling, and apparently they're great at it. I still think it would have been better for Sony to take the Microsoft's/Apple's approach of just dealing with the situation the normal way - 'oh well, our system got hacked, we had a nice run (certainly way better than 360) of not being hacked, it was cool while it lasted'. Simple as that.

@MormonWarrior: You can already buy a ps3 and not be able to do with it what Sony designed it for. For instance the removal of OS support The removal of  backwards compatibility. Sony as removed so much from the ps3 to save themselves money that's a shadow of what it was at launch. But lets not talk about what Sony has done lets worry about online play.

Well...let's say hackers continue to keep hacking these devices and Sony, Microsoft...whoever decides the amount of resources required to have to keep updating their security and protect their tech and the accounts of those who use their services is just too much trouble. Sony just doesn't make the playstation, microsoft just doesn't make the 360. They are still making shit loads of money regardless of these devices.

Then what?

Ultimately the only people who will suffer from this is the legitimate consumer. End of.

This just dropped on AnonNews last night.

OpSony Update, to all

Greetings,  Sony Customers And PS3 Users . We are Anonymous.

During the last few  days, Anonymous has been targeting Sony for their outrageous treatment  of not only PS3 users and jailbreakers, but also of the general public.  Their propaganda  regarding   j ailbreaking implies that it  encourages  piracy and  thereby   makes people lose their jobs , whereas  j ailbreaking  actually just means you are making YOUR device do what it should do . Imagine if Microsoft forced you to use Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or Chrome. Imagine if they denied users from using any other web browser than their own.  Many people  would obviously be pissed... but then,  why aren't  you  pissed at  Sony ?

The fact that t heir litigation   demanded information on  everyone  who  had viewed the material,  was completely unacceptable .   This is  a threat not only to the g aming  community ,  but to freedom of information in general. T he fact that  the privacy of individuals can be violated, si mply for accessing information , and legal action can be taken for doing something with something you own, are steps far beyond the line.  Anonymous decided it could not allow this to stand.  If jailbreaking a phone for use of legal (unsigned) apps is found legal, why would this be any different for the Geohot case, seeing as Geohot explicitly states he does not support piracy?

Anonymous  is not attacking the PSN at this time .  Sony's official position is that the PSN is undergoing mainten a nce.  We realize that targeting the PSN is not a good idea.  We have therefore temporarily suspended our action , until a method is found that will not severely impact Sony customers.

Anonymous is on your side , standing  up for your rights. We  are not aiming to attack customers of Sony .   T his  attack is aimed solely at Sony , and we will try  our best  to not  a ffect the gamers ,   as t his  would defeat the purpose of  our  actions .   If we did inconvenience users, please know that this was not our goal.
Th is  operation is a response to Son y's attempt to  deprive their customers of products  they bought  and therefore own, wholly and completely .  Anonymous will not attempt to fight this by following the exact same course of action.  We have plenty of tricks up our sleeves.

As a last point, we would like to point out that different operations are  "run"  by different people. Those who are involved in the organisation of OpSony, are not  necessarily  those involved in that of SonyRecon. Anonymous Operations are generally independent efforts, and it would be a mistake to assume that the same individuals are responsible for every action taken.  Anonymous is comprised  of  people with diverse points of view,  of which not all  coincide with one another.

That being said, our campaign against Sony and others that would trample on the idea of free information  will  continue ,  until we are satisfied with the outcome.

We are Anonymous,
We are legion,
We never forgive,
We never forget,
Expect us.

@LordXavierBritish: I love how they're trying to justify their actions. And in all those paragraphs they never actually apologised for what they did. If I wanted somebody to stand up for my rights, Anonymous would be the last people I'd call upon.

Sony are protecting their product, that's all. They have every right to do that. Are Anon seriously suggesting that Sony should just sit by and idly watch some dude hack their system and potentially enable thousands of others to do the same? Even if this GeoHot guy doesn't support piracy, he's giving others an easier means of making it possible.

Whether this is all the same group of people or not, this has led to certain members of Anon to dig up personal info on Sony executives. Isn't that contradictory to what they are fighting for?

Use your computer skills for something useful. Quit with all this "internet hacker gang" bullshit.

US Law says that once you buy something, it's yours.  You can reverse engineer it, you can break it, you can do whatever you want.  George did this with the iPhone and countless other devices, hell Microsoft even MAILED HIM A FREE WINDOWS PHONE 7 in the hopes that he hacks it for the community.  Sony is butt-hurt that their "piracy-proof" console will no longer be piracy-free.

The PS3 had a solid 5 years of zero piracy, more so than any console in history.  They need to just let go and admit they lost, it'll just get worse.  George isn't some no-name hacker, he's a hero at DEFCON, more than likely has the US Government outside his house at all times, and millions of people will support him for this.  It's HIS PS3, he can do what he wants as he paid for the PS3.  It's not his fault he's a gifted hacker and Sony didn't try hard enough.  Still, 5 years of hack-free is good enough that even Microsoft would take it.

@darkdragonsoul99:
Sony primarily designed the PS3 to play PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies and all models do that. Sure, some features that were nice (most notably backwards compatibility) were removed over the last years, but guess what: Sony also cut the price by $200 which is way nicer. Microsoft cut the price of the 360 by only $80 and that's over a longer period, too. There's little consumers care more about than price.
And seeing as this whole debacle supposedly stems from the removal of Linux support I'll voice my opinion on that, too: I didn't care about it, didn't buy a PS3 until they brought out the Slim which never supported it (guess why? that's right, the price). And if you are of the opinion that Sony had no right to remove it, there's a lawsuit going on right now deciding just that. But that wouldn't get Linux back on the PS3, would it? So the hackers looked into the security of the system and cracked it wide open and now there's another lawsuit going on targeting two of them. And that's the real problem Anonymous has with this: Someone else decides what's right or wrong. They don't want that, Hotz is right of course by virtue of being on the side of free information. This is childish behavior. "Someone with authority might tell me I can't do what I like, I'll make someone else miserable for it." If they have problems with the laws in America they should found a political party and try to have an influence on legislature, not DDoS Sony servers.

@KaosAngel: Sure, but he made all his efforts public domain. He could've just hacked his own PS3 and played PS2 games and run Linux quite happily. But no, he had to compromise his position by telling everyone else how to do it. Sony removed Linux for a reason, it was leading to security breaches which could have potentially led to piracy. Why should they just sit back and take that?

I don't agree with Anonymous hacking PSN, but on the same note I don't believe that Sony should have access to the ISP and user identities of anyone who merely viewed information regarding the Geohot PS3 jailbreak.  Reading information should not be illegal and Sony is attempting to censor that information.  Acting on it is entirely different than reading it and that is where the problem begins in my opinion.

Personally I never once thought "man I wish this was jailbroken... I feel so restricted!" about the PS3. It plays my games, films and music. I don't need any more than that. All this hacking has only helped to make things worse rather than better. So the sooner this all stops, the better.

Sony can handle whatever they throw at them, Anon fulfills their delusional Robin Hood fantasy.  The only people that lose are the average consumers that have to deal with an occasionally crippled PSN.

So far all I've seen is this from Anon:
"You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing information... So we'll screw a lot of uninvolved, ordinary people who use your service and make ourselves out to be cool dudes."

In which case I read "your suppression of this information is motivated by corporate greed and the desire for complete control over the actions of individuals" as "we're bored and thought this'd be fun, so have at you!"

But maybe that's just me.

It's fair enough for anonymous to step up against racism on Habbo hotel or the Scientology scam artists, but this whole Sony thing is stupid.
First of all, what they are doing are only hurting the consumers of a free service. If Sony gets DDOSed so much, the nonworking service is never going to put Sony at blame since EVERYONE knows who's at fault and secondly, there are way bigger fish to fry: Is it really okay for Activision to charge people out the nose for their products? Is it right what EA is doing with all the ridiculous unlock codes? How about Microsoft's expensive Xbox LIVE service that you need to be able to play multiplayer and only offers half of the functions in Europe?

It was retarded when they DDOSed Notch for not updating Minecraft frequently enough and it's retarded now.

This right here. If you don't like the way a company does business, shouldn't you just build a better service yourself? With all the zeal Anonymous is putting into this "stick it to the man" nonsense, you'd think they could direct that energy towards something actually productive.

Or no wait. Just Google people's addresses and abuse existing services for DDoS attacks. Don't produce anything meaningful of your own, just abuse the things other people bothered to create. Way to get by on the minimum amount of effort, assholes.

I don't like Anonymous they're cowards. Hiding behind a faceless name and attacking any organisation they deem to have violated their laws. Pretty much every democracy in the world has a version of the same rules regarding how crimes are dealt with and how punishment is dished out.

Anonymous claims to seek to protect free speech and free exchange of information but what about due process and right to a trial. No they skip all that and go from gut reaction to punishment. But what happens when DDOS attacks are not enough, Escalation thats what. When Anonymous sees their current tactics having less and less effect they will move on to bigger and more damaging attacks. One of those attacks could end up getting someone killed somewhere down the line, and at that point they're just another terrorist group, no better that Al Qaeda or the IRA.

OK maybe I'm jumping the gun but at some point Anonymous will begin to change and escalate their tactics.

That's exactly the point people keep missing, if he hacked the system and just did what he wanted with it, it would of been all fine and dandy. But as soon as he posted it on the net, and declared it with that video and shit, that's where it all went down hill for him.

I don't see a problem with him hacking his own console, the real issue is him distributing the means of doing so to the rest of the internet.

I don't like the way either side is handling the issue, though anon's actions have me liking Gehotz's side a little bit less.

And what makes Anon so entitled to mess with something I've payed for? It's not a free service if you have plus, besides the initial 400$ I've spent on the PS3 itself with a promise of service.

Fuck you.

When the homebrew/jailbreaking community isn't happy nobody is happy...

You have to admit it, this is mostly sony's fault, what did they expect when they sent out multiple court orders across multiple countries to people who just want to get more out of their system!

Instead of going after these "hackers" why not improve on a product instead of waging war on the last people you want to mess with (the otheros/jailbreak/hacking community)

How about ADDING features that make having the latest system software WORTH IT! Lets see the last free feature they added to the system..... Adding more options to the controller power save auto turn-off feature?!!

There are SO many things that can be improved on the PS3, just check out the Playstation.blog Share site, lots of good ideas most of which have been ignored for months!

Yeah, Sony is butt-hurt.  Apple didn't QQ like a bitch when he released the jailbreak that allows for pirated apps, Google didn't bitch like a pussy when George started to hack Android stuff, and Microsoft gave George a god damn free Windows Phone 7 in the hopes that he hacks it and gives it to people who own WP7.  You can share it, Sony is just pulling straws and when George wins the case, he'll just hit harder when Sony releases the NGP.

" I don't agree with Anonymous hacking PSN, but on the same note I don't believe that Sony should have access to the ISP and user identities of anyone who merely viewed information regarding the Geohot PS3 jailbreak. "
Wow. I hadn't realized they were doing this. Some executive suggests, "Hey, let's just sue everyone who watched the youtube video!" and everyone nods and smiles. Delusional pricks.

The Sony fanboys need to read the OP's linked article. Maybe google "Sony audio cd rootkit" as well. Sony has done much more than protect their own intellectual property over the years, they have infringed on the rights of consumers any time they feel it is in their interest. Anonymous may not be the "white knights" that they claim to be, but Sony is in no way innocent.
