Apple Unveils Faster, Taller, Thinner iPhone 5

If only there was a website that tested technology.

The colors of the Touch may be gaudy, but why doesn't the iPhone at least have the option?

Nice looking phone, got some good upgrades. I just picked up a 4s a few months ago though so I'm good for now. I thought for a second or two about selling mine to get the new one then realized I sound like a crazy person.

Still on the fence between this and the ATIV S shown here. Really hard to make up my mind and will be switching from my blackberry. I just like the idea of the live tiles.

Also, did anyone see the new ipod nano and touch? The touch looks great but what the fuck is up with the Nano? Looks like a sony rip off and the colors. Man, those are drab pastels.

I think I may finally make the switch to white. But I'm not sure...

Anyway, Apple unveils a new iPhone that now suddenly has a lot more in common with the competing Android phones than it used to. Larger screen, wide screen aspect ratio, faster hardware, for some reason lower resolution than higher end Android phones though.

The biggest takeaway from this announcement is how relatively uninteresting it is.

I've had my iPhone 3G since 2008 and I'm still using it. I am due for an upgrade and will wait and see how much the monthly plan will be. Otherwise, I might as well go with the 4S, which performance-wise is very similar to the 5 minus the screen size. On top of that, there will be a price cut for all previous models. I'll just wait and see how things pan out with the iPhone 5 during its first week.

I've done the same thing, except for Android, which I feel is easily the best operating system on the mobile market. You can literally customize your phone to look like and do anything on Android where as all the other phones are so closed down. And hey, even if you don't want to do any of that customization stuff, stock Android is beyond awesome now too. Oh Jelly Bean.

Meh. My S3 still crushes this device. After iPhone 4, I've been constantly let down by Apple phones.

So the combined LTE chip is a big deal here in Europe, since AFAIK (= I might very well be wrong) all the other smartphones and the iPad use chips that only work with northern amercian LTE frequencies.

Not a big mobile gamer. I keep my smartphone lean and clean. I usually only listen to stuff or read (browser, instapaper, kindle) for mobile electronic entertainment purposes.

Like the new iPhone though. I have a Nexus S at the moment and the camera on this is kinda crappy and I want to upgrade. Both sides have a lot going for them. Non is delivering the 1week battery life I want though.

Haven't we, as an technophile adience, grown above stupid fanboyisms or Apple-hating?

Get to upgrade from my Samsung Focus WP7 this November. Probably will go for the Nokia 920. For as simple as Live Tiles are, I can't imagine getting a phone without one.

I wouldn't mind getting an Android phone (the Galaxy Note II intrigues me), even though the Android experience I have with my Asus Transformer isn't exactly as top notch as I've heard the phones are, but the integration of Windows 8 and WP8 is something I'm looking forward to.

Nice, I think I might be able to get one when my plan ends in half a year.  Im actually happy with my iPhone 4 and I like how the interface looks compared to an Android one.  

Developing apps is a bitch when every device out there is a goddamn different screen size.

Been waiting for this since I got my iPhone 4. Didn't see much of a reason to upgrade to 4S, but not really seeing much of a reason to upgrade to the 5 either.

I kind of feel sorry for Apple. I don't know what they can do to make me really want a new phone. The iPhone 4 was too big a leap and the best tech product I've ever owned. After LTE I can't think of anything else I want. A 4 inch screen might be too big, I'm happy with 3.5. I'll get this but I'm really curious if there is anywhere else to go except faster chips.

I'm due for an upgrade from my 4, for the cost savings it makes most sense to go for a 4S.

@Sooty: I'll agree except for camera speed. Having to wait two-three seconds for the iris to open can either be just fine, or excruciatingly long. I know two-three seconds seems like nothing in everyday life, but cutting that in half is a very noticeable change. Everything else is meh, but camera speed improvements are always welcome. That probably has more to do with software though.

I've never had any issues with mine. Seems you are just bitter. I swear the anti-apple people are noisier than the apple people.

Iphones are complete crap. More expensive then any other device that does the same thing. Screen is as fragile as a new born. Batterys pretty much always shit. Apple refuses to cover their own items for any kinds of damage besides the occasional cracked screen and even then they still will fight with you. Radio inside gives it piss poor range on its reception. Why is this crap on here? At least put something that hasn't been released multiple times and looks and works the same.

Other than Brad and maybe Vinnie, Giantbomb crew are a bunch of iPhone, Android hating zealots.

@SadisticWOlf: I use one of the push non-gas/non-electric lawnmowers. It gets caught on twigs sometimes but otherwise it's pretty alright.

Would someone explain to me the fervor at which people are hating the iPhone 5? Comparing it to the Galaxy S3 is ridiculous (it's literally comparing apples to oranges) and everything about the phone was known weeks in advance.

I would argue that Apple's industrial design, function and tech are part-in-parcel -- all collude to create the User Experience. That's where they've won. People who know their shit always scoff at Apple, in large part because of how closed they make everything, and also because of the super-creepy cult-like following they've developed, which are two good reasons to look down one's nose. But it's not like Apple puts out sub-par stuff. It's good. And it's pretty. And the MS user experience is convoluted garbage. Most people just want something that does everything they want it to do, well, and with little fuss.
