Apple's Game Center Is Now Available

And now I have 480 achievement points in a bad port of Ms. Pac-Man.

Apple rolled out iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch today, and if you have a relatively modern device (meaning something newer than an iPhone 3G), you can give it a go right now. The new software addition is Game Center, Apple's unified service for player matching, friends lists, leaderboards, and achievements. So far it seems... functional?

If I was going to release a unified player matching service, I think I'd roll out a series of games at the same time and try to make a big deal out of it. But for a few hours this morning, it looked like there was nothing. And so far, all I've been able to find is Ms. Pac-Man, which was updated about an hour ago to include Game Center support. I decided to pick up a copy of that (it's five bucks right now) to see how it all works.

First thing's first: this is not a very good version of Ms. Pac-Man. I'm playing on an iPhone 4, and the movement feels a bit jerkier than the real arcade machine does. Also, the game hitches up whenever I collect fruit. On top of that, none of the control options are very good. But you probably already guessed that. Unless you're looking to write an article about Game Center for the popular gaming website you write for, I can't recommend it at all.

The Game Center achievement stuff pops up at the end of the game with a bunch of placeholder achievement ID text. I guess that'll take another update to Ms. Pac-Man or something. It's all a bit slicker in the actual Game Center app, though.

One game of Ms. Pac-Man with a score of just under 50,000 points was enough to get me 12 of the 25 achievements. It also put me on top of my friends leaderboard and put me in the Top 5% of scores, which is sort of a neat way to display overall rankings.

You know, if I liked more iPhone games (or if the right iPhone games were updated with Game Center support), this stuff would actually be pretty cool. You can launch games right out of the Game Center app, meaning you could always shove all of your games onto the last page of your phone in folders that you'll never have to sift through. Even in this weird, half-finished, barely supported state, it seems to provide a better on-phone experience than most of the other unifying achievement services on iPhone. Of course, it also lacks support for Facebook and some of the other bells and whistles that things like OpenFeint already do.

I pretty much agree with the article.  If more games support it or some new, better games are released with Game Center support then it seems like a great service.  Especially with regular updates from Apple which are sure to come.  Just not into the whole idea of re-playing all my games again for the sole purpose of getting achievements.

Not a bad deal always dig an Achievement system, just an added bonus to Apple. Do hope they add an all future games clause just to reign in some of the other Trophy system's that are out there like openfeignt and to unify them under one roof.

The lack of social media integration is really going to hurt this compared to the existing services already in place in many games. Poor choice.

Looks like a good first effort, but who knows how much it will really catch on.

I haven't tried this out yet, but alternatives such as Openfeint are doing such a great job already that this seems like a bit of a "me too" move by Apple. If it somehow integrates with the existing services it will be great though.

Glad to see this.  I have low expectations, for now, but given Apple's track record I do think they will continue to make improvements as time goes on.  This will keep getting better (unlike the sad Wii online situation), and so getting it out the door was a good first step.

@LiquidPenguins:  I think millions and millions of people disagree. There's a ton of amazingly fun games. The forgettable stuff is the stuff that is trying to be a PSP or console game and uses crap onscreen controls.

Yeah this is very handy, and god do I love to be 'validated' by achievements in every aspect of my life, my  tombstone will just be a URL to my GB profile.

@VargTheViking: Think if you hit updates in the apps store, it should then update all your exsisting apps to run in game centre. You've probably figured this out by now :)

They should support Cave's shooters instead. Those games are tight!

The number of app updates with gamecenter leaderboards  keeps going up. The system is a little bare bones compared to Xbox live but I think it’s a nice start.

Nice to see that achievement systems are growing on all platforms, really adds a lot to a game regardless of the achievements being very easy or very hard.

If Apple were decent programmers, they could make this work for any of their iOS devices like any normal games platform owner.

So far this looks promising, just need the number of games with this integration to catch up.

Too bad it's not available on the 1st gen iPod Touch. It would have been fun to give it a try.

I feel Game Center is a good start by Apple, but they still have a long way to go as a few things are missing especially on the developer side of things.

They really need to get the NGmoco guys and EA to update their previous titles and all future titles to make this a worthwhile thing. I would also like to see the ability to send score challenges for these games to show some bragging rights to your friends. This is a good start with a lot of room to grow.
