Assassin's Creed III Coming October 30

The "three years" in the making sequel will arrive this fall.

With Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations existing as something close to, but not quite fully proper sequels in the Assassin's Creed lineage, many have been wringing their hands in rapt anticipation over when, precisely, they would get their hands on something Assassin's Creed related with the word "three" in it, possibly represented by some kind of numeric character, either modern or using old timey Roman numerals. Now, Ubisoft has seen fit to tell you.

We don't know who you'll be playing as in Assassin's Creed III, but it stands to reason whoever it is will be like,
We don't know who you'll be playing as in Assassin's Creed III, but it stands to reason whoever it is will be like, "Uh uh uh uh uh" at some point.

It turns out you'll be getting your grubby, stabby hands on Assassin's Creed III (Hah! Roman numerals! I was right!) on October 30, 2012.

The news came via Ubisoft's regularly scheduled investors call this morning, where Ubi boss Yves Guillemot proclaimed both that "Assassin's Creed III is the true next generation of both the Assassin's Creed brand and interactive entertainment/storytelling in general," and that it would be "the biggest launch in Ubisoft history."

Little is known about the plot of the next official sequel in the series, save but for the acknowledgment that it will revolve around adventures not featuring either Ezio nor Altair as the protagonist. Instead, a mysterious new assassin will enter the fray, presumably to tie up the story arc into a nice, neat trilogy, because that's just how things are done these days.

I'll just go ahead and call it that this will be the game where you play exclusively as Desmond. That could be a thing, right?

@MordeaniisChaos: AR glasses would be close to my third proposed option, a gimmick to make it believable. But they released box art for ACIII and it looke like they're going with my second option. Using the animus to drive the story somehow. Because we know ACIII is supposed to wrap up Desmond's story, but the box art clearly shows someone in the American Revolution and no Desmond. Thus, the game concluding Desmond's story is not a Desmond-centric game because, as I predicted, a fully Desmond-centric game is impossible with the limitations they built into the atmosphere of the game.

Not that this is really a bad thing, just an observation. A Desmond-centric game is almost impossible to make, and thus they aren't making one.

Ok, a Desmond exclusive game is going to be hard to make. In fact, it's almost impossible. Why? Because there can't be any HUD. Assassin's Creed has built their entire series out of justifying the HUD, with the Animus. It feels like a video game because FOR DESMOND IT IS. You're experiencing exactly what Desmond is, but when you control Desmond, you get none of that. It's why you only play as Desmond in short snippets. Now imagine the ridiculous difficulty if they built a game exactly the same as the other Assassin's Creed games WITHOUT THE HUD. The difficulty would be ludicrous. No interactive maps, no health bar, indication of ammuniton, objective, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

If they used a HUD for a Desmond exclusive game, they would be completely dismantling everything their series has been built around, selling out to appease the crowd who only care about being able to play a game instead of the overall experience, and when it comes to the overall experience, Assassin's Creed is one of the best. I'm really nervous to see if they'll sell out and ruin everything, never make a truly Desmond exclusive game and work around using the animus to drive the plot again, or come up with some other interesting gimmick to make a Desmond game playable.

If you can have a crazy computer that reads yoru DNA and makes a perfect recreation of an entire chunk of the world from centuries ago, I think they can come up with fucking AR glasses. Plus you already play Desmond from the third person, which HUD or no HUD, kinda isn't possible without certain things being true.

AC: Embers (short film showing the end of Ezio's story) seems to be setting up a story in China so maybe that's where it will be.

Not sure another game in less than a year is a good idea.

Supposedly AC3 has been somewhat in development since Assassin's Creed II was released, while Brotherhood and Revelations were made by essentially B-teams at Ubisoft with some oversight by the main designers (who have been focusing most of their attention on Assassin's Creed III). I think I've mostly heard that said on forums, and can't provide any particular link or interview where someone from Ubisoft confirms that, so I can't say for certain if all that is accurate.

My point is, I'm fairly certain they didn't just crank AC3 out in a year, not in the same way they did with Brotherhood and Revelations. However, yes, it's been a year since Brotherhood, and I wonder if people are getting so tired of Assassin's Creed that even if AC3 is a big improvement it maybe won't sell as much as it deserves. Ubisoft is getting dangerously close to Tony Hawk's/Guitar Hero territory, when it comes to AC.

First of all. Called it.

Secondly, desmond thing might be it but not for sure.

Third this will probably be awesome, but the next generation in storytelling? I'm cynical.

I haven't finished brotherhood yet, and haven't touched revelations. I'd like to play revelations, but the fact of the matter is that I have WAY TOO MANY games to play. And I was playing the AC games when I was more into my Xbox. Now I'm very much back in love with my PC after I upgraded it a lot. Unfortunately there just aren't as many PC players as there are console players, as you will see if you load up a call of duty game in multiplayer. Consoles have like 5 times as many players in each game versus the PC counterparts. It's depressing, but makes sense given the larger commitment required for a PC. You have to pay more, and know more to make it a worthwhile system. Or you could buy a prebuilt system, but that's pretty much always a bad idea. You pay more for an inferior system, that is generally more difficult to upgrade, depending on who made it.

Compaqs, Dell, HP, all those brands have terrible computers. You are SO much better off reading a bit, and doing some research, and then building it yourself. Trust me, it pays off big time.

I want this to be a game where you play as Desmond's great-great-grandson, who finds an animus to relive Desmond's life.

Assassin's Creed III tells the continuing story of Desmond through his ancestor John Wilkes Booth, as Desmond tries to uncover a conspiracy involving Lincoln and the Templars.

I don't care, I love Assassin Creed and the more the merrier. My only problem has been the recent arguement with my partner, as he's finished AC Revelations and I have yet to start it. But this was not the cause of the arguement. I was watching him play whilst I was doing some college work and saw that Ezio had found another apple. For mentioning, 'Oh another one!', I was told that this was the same apple as the one before, which doesn't work in my book. The timeline woudln't be right. Ezio found the other apple years before and then put it in his family home for save keeping, and for Desmond to find and start Revelations. Someone tell me I am right, there's two apple's now?

But can't wait for this AC 3. I wouldn't care if the series carried on for ages! More, more, more!!!

I'd like it if they structured the game to where every odd-numbered chapter, including the first and last, you play as Desmond, but in each even chapter you get a different ancestor through the Animus. It would be a great way to do more neat historical stuff without overshadowing the thread of the main plot.

I only bought AC rev as I thought I wanted more 'uh uh uh uh uh' but after 4hrs I lost all drive for playing it.

I think Im excited for this game?  When I read the title I wasnt really surprised that they Assassin's Creed III was coming out this year considering the story revolves around 2012 and shit.  Also, the AC formula has been boring me lately but then I read that this game has been in development for 3 years....

As long as they look back onto AC 2 for direction and not Brotherhood and Revelations that are far too focused on shooting things and machine guns (Yeah, really!) it could be good. Steering tanks and mixing X number of ingredients to make a bomb that you never use anyway? Nothx

I hope Ubisoft realizes that if Assassins Creed III isn't a drastically different game from the previous 4 entries, the franchise will die like Tony Hawk did.

Putting out a game every single year is not always the best option.

Seems like a weird thing to build the third game at the same time as the previous two side-iterations. Will the third game have the minor advancements of Brotherhood and Revelations? Was the story even planned out with this order in mind? It is a relief to hear that it's been in development for 3 years though. We might actually get sufficient changes (and then another mini-trilogy to burn them out, of course).

Reading some of the other discussion here, I never understood the hate for AC1. I got into it a bit late, expecting a mediocre game from everything I've heard.. but it was pretty fantastic, like nothing I have ever played before. Yea the missions had a bit of repetition, but they were still fun to do. Still doesn't make much sense to me.

Not really. This news actually makes the last two games make sense.

The last two games were the side teams, Using the same assets, making changes, filling in story elements and developing the multi player element, introducing some new concepts to trial them out.

The Main team continuing to work on number 3. If it is out in October the main story and plot etc has been wrapped up already by now and so the staff who have left also makes sense. Done, 3 games done, story wrapped up - move on.

I bet you pretty much the last two games were test bed's for features of 3. Some mechanics and defiantly the multi player being produced. We been Test Chimps for he last couple of games.

Assassin's Creed was decent, 2 was AMAZING, Brotherhood had a weak single player but introduced an awesome multiplayer and Revelations was just flat. Based on this trend, my expectation for 3 is low. Ubisoft is on the verge of ruining the series.

It was bizarre I used to be an incredible fan of the AC series (The second one was fantastic and as was the first), brotherhood came out and it was pretty decent and I enjoyed it but so far with revelations it's bizzare, it's the first AC game that hasn't grabbed me at all, not sure what it is just something about it. I love the new slow-mo moments and tweaks on mechanics (Hook blade, parachutes, ziplines) but anything that isn't a tweak on movement for me just seems annoying. The bomb crafting I find interrupts game play, and the tower defense mini game is not something that should have ever even been thought of. Besides that and a bit of a lazily told story compared to the first and second the dust. The stupid dust in some of the cities is atrocious, just clogs the screen with a haze of unchangeable, immobile, dust.

Anyone hoping for AC3 to be a Desmond exclusive game is going to be let down.

It was either the Game Informer cover story about Revelations or the the GI podcast (about Revelations) where the devs confirmed there wouldn't be a Desmond only AC game and that the main/numbered series would always have a new lead character at some point throughout history.

I really couldn't stand the first game, cool concept aside, since it got so repetitive so quickly. The second game is amazing, one of the top five games of 2009. Brotherhood was...alright. Actually, they messed up a lot of the stuff I liked about II, like the way horses controlled and how fighting was handled...but it also made me care about the formerly awful characters outside the Animus, so it was a mixed bag.

I'm interested in seeing what they put out. Hope it's great.

AC1 was a bad game with a couple good ideas, and 2 and brohood picked up on that potential for the most part. Most of what Rev added wasn't so great. Hopefully this is like a jump from 1 to 2 or 1 to Brotherhood.

Haven't bothered to pick up Revelations yet (will most likely at some point though). Will be interesting to see what his new entry is all about.

This. AC1 was so just-okay that I was pleasantly surprised by ACII's awesomeness. Brotherhood was probably great, but I couldn't tell because it felt like more ACII, which I'd already played to death until I was bored with it less than a year before Brotherhood came out. Revelations might have been awesome too, but who knows, after buying Brotherhood only to find out I was bored with it after 10 minutes, I never gave Revelations a second thought.

The multiplayer should have just been DLC for ACII.

I love the ancient setting, but modern times might just be the fresher-upper this series needs. Still, there's just been so much AC that it feels boring now; it will take more than a new coat of pixels to fix.

Ubi is so anxious to turn this into their annualized COD cash cow that they're running it into the ground. Three years in development? More like one, and not even that yet.

Recently bought Brotherhood, but I haven't had the time to play it yet. I'm playing through about six games at a time without really having any time to play games at all. Looking forward to it, though, AC 2 is one of my all-time favourite games. More of the same would be good enough. Same for Revelations. Let's see if I can get through both before 3 comes out.

Great! I hope you don't play as Desmond, because I want that game set in the French Revolution to be real.
