Assassin's Creed III Coming October 30

The "three years" in the making sequel will arrive this fall.

With Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations existing as something close to, but not quite fully proper sequels in the Assassin's Creed lineage, many have been wringing their hands in rapt anticipation over when, precisely, they would get their hands on something Assassin's Creed related with the word "three" in it, possibly represented by some kind of numeric character, either modern or using old timey Roman numerals. Now, Ubisoft has seen fit to tell you.

We don't know who you'll be playing as in Assassin's Creed III, but it stands to reason whoever it is will be like,
We don't know who you'll be playing as in Assassin's Creed III, but it stands to reason whoever it is will be like, "Uh uh uh uh uh" at some point.

It turns out you'll be getting your grubby, stabby hands on Assassin's Creed III (Hah! Roman numerals! I was right!) on October 30, 2012.

The news came via Ubisoft's regularly scheduled investors call this morning, where Ubi boss Yves Guillemot proclaimed both that "Assassin's Creed III is the true next generation of both the Assassin's Creed brand and interactive entertainment/storytelling in general," and that it would be "the biggest launch in Ubisoft history."

Little is known about the plot of the next official sequel in the series, save but for the acknowledgment that it will revolve around adventures not featuring either Ezio nor Altair as the protagonist. Instead, a mysterious new assassin will enter the fray, presumably to tie up the story arc into a nice, neat trilogy, because that's just how things are done these days.

I'll just go ahead and call it that this will be the game where you play exclusively as Desmond. That could be a thing, right?

So what if... just what if to get around how it makes sense you can just die and pop back in AC and how they corner off the world, what if you're playing as Desmond but being controlled by someone else?

Apologies if this was suggested in the 4 pages of comments!

Playing mainly as Desmond COULD be a thing.

But it won't be a thing.

I saw on Eurogamer that there's a rumor going on that the next installment of assassin's creed is set in the american revolution. Also Ubisoft is releasing a single player dlc for Revelations focusing on Desmond.

  • First game: Alright
  • Second game: Amazing
  • Brotherhood: Let-down after previous title

Haven't bothered to pick up Revelations yet (will most likely at some point though). Will be interesting to see what his new entry is all about.

This is a good idea. If 3 hadn't been next, I probably wouldn't have played the next iteration. Now I guess I'll have to.

Personally, I think it should be set in early 20th century New Orleans. The architecture would lend itself well to the climbing and swinging traversal, plus all the different cultural influences of the time and place would be something really fun for the AC teams to play around with. Either that, or make it entirely based on Desmond. Making it within the last century or so would make the ancestor closer to Desmond, like a grandfather or great grandfather.

Revelations was one Ezio game too many. Also it was the first game in the franchise which seemed kinda half-hearted to me.

They've said before there will be no Desmond only game, which is a tad disappointing. I just hope it's not historically based in the American Revolution like the rumors are saying, can't help but think that would be boring and not make an whole lot of sense for the timeline. Though to be fair, the American Revolution setting as been rumored for Assassin's Creed since the second game was announced.

I never realized Revelations sold seven million copies, impressive.

Playing through Revelations now, and I agree with most of the complaints. So far little on Desmond, and even the Ezio story isn't that compelling. The most interesting part so far has been the Altair flashbacks really.

Not sure another game in less than a year is a good idea. They came close to burning out with the latest one and just slapping a 3 on there isn't going to prevent that here.

I was so convinced before Revelations that the final game (well... final in this story arc) would have Desmond in modern day, running around, being all Assassin-y. No time periods, nothing. But after Revelations' ending, I'm less convinced. Think of the sheer complexity of all that asset creation to make a MODERN URBAN CITY with all that environmental interaction, all the AI walking around, there'd probably be cars everywhere too... That's just unrealistic. Now, I'm expecting this to be like Desmond running around in a vault, probably instead flashing back to like... their weird "first civilization" stuff they've always hinted at.

They need a new game engine for AC3. The engine used in Brotherhood and Revelations is dated.

I know it's asking too much for this to be as much of an improvement over its predecessor as AC2 was to AC1, but a boy can dream, can't he? Cannot fucking wait.

I am, as of Revelations' release day, over the Assassin's Creed games. I loved 1 and 2 deeply, played them over and over, enjoyed Brotherhood but that was it. The game mechanics need an overhaul. The AI behavior needs enhancements. And most importantly, the Ezio-milking has to STOP! Fuck Ezio, give us other characters from around the world and throughout history LIKE YOU PROMISED, UBISOFT!

I swore the series off after the second one, when the main character was changed from an assassin to a spoiled brat.

I haven't played Revelations yet and I'm not really itching to pick it up. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind as more info on this game is released, or maybe I'll just skip that game alltogether.

I'm ready to be impressed by this entry though, expectations are high.

I'm still playing Revelations and I'm enjoying it. I just don't get sick of Assassin's Creed. I always want to get better at the combat. I constantly have a craving to pull off something even more amazing and bad ass than the last thing I did. It's so satisfying to just nail a perfect sequence of events in AC that is actually very entertaining to watch let alone play.

I do hope to see significant change in AC III just to bring some freshness to the series. It's one of the rare titles that will get me to the store day one to buy it.

Revelations as a a decent/ok game but 2 and BRO were better. I hope they gimp the world and the powers the assassins have. It was just too much unnecessary mechanics and devises.

Yeah, it'll launch in October, FOR CONSOLES. If Ubisoft is anything like history portrays them, the PC version will be at least 2 months delayed and will noy be playable fifty per cent of the time anyway due to the god damn DRM.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority here or not, but an ACIII with all Desmond holds almost no interest for me. However, I could play other ancestors in other settings every year forever.

Maybe you'll play as Desmond but when you reach a city he'll have a flashback to an ancestor, which will guide him to where he needs to go.

@Evil_Alaska: Although he is definitely a lot better in Revelations that whole game is so completely forgettable you might as well just look up the ending on YouTube and save yourself some money. Literally the ending is the only element of any importance here. The big reveal about Altairs life can be summed up in two sentences. Ezio really doesn't go anywhere. Desmond doesn't go anywhere. The whole game seems like a realllly drawn out DLC pack.

I think i'm sort of burned out on the series. I have played every one of the games and I think that I dont want any more assassin's creed. I'll wait until e3 and see some sort of video or something before I even consider getting excited for this.
