Backwards Dragons, Broken Resistances in Skyrim Patch

You may want to wait a little bit longer, if you've been holding off.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s version 1.2 patch is not the savior we have been looking for. Cue the sound of a sad violin.

Bethesda Game Studios issuing patches for its games that end up fixing some things while also conveniently breaking others is not a new occurrence, but what’s being broken with version 1.2 may encourage you to hold off a bit.

I’m not going to hold dragons flying backwards against the game--that sounds (and looks!) awesome.

The real problem is for players who invested into magic resistance for their character, as the patch appears to make all of those now null and void. These even applies to NPCs with innate magical attributes.

The low-resolution texture issue affecting the Xbox 360 version when installed appears to be inconsistently fixed, too.

There’s a message board thread keeping tabs on the reported issues, but Bethesda has not issued an official statement on the matter. When that inevitably changes, I’ll update this story with the company's comments. Report your own issues below.

Hmmm... Playing on pc, and the only issue I've run into at all is that the game randomly decides to quit sometimes. Other than that, no problems.

Getting hit by magic is pretty much a one hit death now. Also lots of missing textures :(

I think Bethesda had their old coders busy looking after a bee inside a jar in a basement, the jar broke and they saw that the game was released, they demanded to be allowed to work on the game and they told them "ok, let them work on a patch, they cant fuck up THAT much can they?". And patch 1.2 was born.

Forget sad violin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ytCEuuW2_A

I just finished playing Skyrim on the PC; it crashed 3 times and glitched about once a half hour. Pretty smooth sailing for Bethesda all things considered.

I fail to see why things like this make a lot of people cry their eyes out. Backwards-flying dragons are pretty awesome tbh, and if your atronachs aren't up to your expectations now, maybe you should consider using a more efficient method for combat (meaning ANY other method). If you're literally getting one-shotted when it comes to magic.... I'm sure there's something you're not doing.

Cheer up people, it's not game breaking.

Well as a mage, it kind of is. I wear zero armour and use resistances to survive.

Luckily I play on PC and I can revert to 1.1 since I have an old .exe knocking about, so it's not a problem.

I played the 360 version today with the new patch and the dragons can get stuck in the air. If I "kill" it the frame rate chugs in the teens or lower until I wait or get far enough away.

Um are all these glitches on the PC and PS3 only? Sofar on 360 I still haven't come across more than couple of minor visual glitches 130+ hours in and nothing seemed different after the patch other than it loads faster now I have it installed.

The mere suggestion that this busted-ass game is a worthy "Game of the Year" candidate is like a slap to Miyamoto-san's face, and I'm not even a Zelda fan.

This article nails the PC experience (especially the Bonechill Passage CTD trigger which still isn't fixed) without the sycophantic free pass Skyrim is getting from the press:

Thanks for sharing. Still, like you said--judging by the sycophantic response from both the gaming press and fans alike, it seems that Bethesda has nothing to worry about. Pathetic.

I've been playing it on the PC since day 1, and even after the patch I have yet to see a single glitch 40 hours in. My magic resist still works too. Am I missing something?

It's possible it is PS3 specific, but that kind of bug looks like it shouldn't be. I certainly have experienced the magic resistance bug on PS3, but no other major issues (not even the frame rate stuff it seemed everybody else had).

Nope. I've tested it on PC and you can totally burn flame atronachs to death now when I know for sure the spell I was using (fireball) never used to damage them in any way. I also tested with frost atronachs and frost spells and the same result occured: they died to what used to not hurt them (and that thing would pop up saying they are immune). My guess is this applies to all platforms.

Hmm, I'm a bit worried now.

In the previous 60+ hrs I haven't had any bugs worth mentioning (game didn't start without using 44.1khz audio output - was an easy fix, so didn't bother me) but after playing the game for few hours after this patch I've fallen through the world once, a dragon I killed didn't revert to bones but to a smooth blue model (missing textures) and I just crashed to desktop in midfight.

Now, I guess this could be just a coincidence, but after seeing this article... damn them if they broke a perfectly functioning game (in my case) with this patch.

I stopped playing for the night 30 minutes before the patch went live. I got lucky and read up on the various forums the problems the patch created and so I haven't played since last night. I'll just have to play offline.

@AiurFlux: Come on. The PC version isn't perfect (far from it), but to rip into it to that degree because of the UI? Seriously? It's not a very good UI and you can see that they made it for consoles, but it's not THAT bad. I would prefer a more direct UI, but I'm honestly not having big problems with it.

By the way, are there any good UI mods out there yet?

It's not just the UI. It's every little detail adding up to a massive clusterfuck. Is the UI atrocious? Yes. It clearly is otherwise I wouldn't have to use a controller to properly navigate it. I mean in this most recent patch they added Esc functionality to the menu system. Let me repeat that, Escape to go back in a menu is now in Skyrim. The fuck is this, 1995? But that's not my biggest point here. It's the fact that they release something that, at times, is completely unplayable. And I don't mean slightly unplayable like "Oh, backwards dragons", I mean full on screen freeze for 5 seconds constant framerate problem unplayable (on the PS3, the PC has other problems involving quests not finishing, furniture in houses disappearing, etc). And all so they could stick to a gimmick date and beat the Christmas rush.

And yes, I mad. I spent almost 140 fucking dollars between my two copies. I work hard for my money, and by hard I mean not really but I'm massively in debt because of student loans, so shit like this in my mind doesn't fly. Do I have faith that they'll fix it? Absolutely, for the most part. But it shouldn't have gotten to this point in the first place. Or maybe I'm just a cankerous vindictive cocksucker.

I love how when Obsidian makes a buggy game, people shit on them like none other; yet Bethesda releases a patch that actually add bugs to the game, and it's no biggie. I love Bethesda's games, but maybe they shouldn't leave their janitorial staff in charge of Quality Assurance.

My resistances appear to be intact. I went up against a few wizards, magic wielding Dragur, and a Dragon Priest and came out fine. In fact, I wonder if maybe it did the opposite as none of those guys could seem to so much as scratch me. I have the bookshelf glitch too and Blood on the Ice seems to be fubar as well since the crime scene seems to be completely cleaned up and the person i'm supposed to talk to to end the quest doesn't appear to exist anymore. I hung around her house for a day in the game, her doors remained unlocked and there was nobody home.

So yeah, I just reverted back to the pre-patch files. Problem solved.

The patch didn't fix anything that important to me anyway. The problems it caused were more severe than any I had before.

Not sure if it's patch related, but all of my lockups have been post-patch. I played roughly 50 hours before the patch came out and never experienced any lock ups, but just over the past two days I have had three! Is there any way to uninstall the patch on consoles??

A lot of the shit on that page has been bugged that way since the beginning. Don't know if that's just supposed to be assumed, or what. I have tons of problems shouting and have had problems where I couldn't trigger important quest dialogues.

Steam auto-updated me even though I told it not to. DAMN YOU GABE. Anyways, thankfully I read up on the patch notes and word of mouth before I started playing. I simply used win7 to restore my .exe to 1.1 and interface.esm to a date earlier in the week - located in steam/commonapps/skyrim or something similar. Some outrageous doo-doo penis-butts over there at Bethesda. I'm guessing fans could do much better if they released the mod tools/creation kit or whatever they are calling it.

This man speaks truth. I'm 70 hours into 360 version, playing from game disc, no problems whatsoever. Patch declined, auto-signed out of Live, continued playing what might be my favorite game ever.

And considering I've been twiddling joysticks and gamepads and keyboards for 28 years, that's a lot of games to compare to. I love the INTERNET RAAAAAAAAGE, especially from the dude who hates it so much he bought copies on two platforms. ;)

For some reason, it crashed my computer more than four times last night. Three times before I downloaded the patch, one after. Crashes happened only about twice in the past week that I have been playing. I hope this is something Bethesda can fix and not because of something wrong with my computer.

@probablytuna: There is probably some weird memory leak related to the save file getting bigger, that was similar to ps3. I'm hoping that the patch fixed that for the PC as well. In the meantime, go to skyrimnexus and grab the 4gb mod and read up on it. That is, if you have 4gb+ of memory. If theres something out there that lets it use more than 4gb, I would like a link, although from most sources I've talked to, the game won't really use more than 4 gigs. My main hope is - fix these bugs introduced and OPTIMIZE SHADOWS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I don't understand why those of us that played the game without any glitches apparently aren't allowed to give this game of the year. I haven't spent 30 plus hours on any other game this year, nor have I had this much fun doing so, so it just seems like common sense to me.

After patching I traveled from Riverwood to Riften. Encountered a dragon along the way, no problems, he behaved as always, which was fly around ( forwards ), land, and scorch me. Cleared out some bandits. No freezes or crashes to report at all. Playing on my PC, game looks and runs like you dreamed it would :)

Tried the game tonight on my 360 with the patch and it looks noticeably better. Fought two dragons, one glitched some but no backwards flying. The resistance thing is...unfortunate. But for me personally I'm playing a pure mage so I'm probably coming out ahead.

55 hours in and easily that many more to go on my first character. Yes, this is my game of the year.
