Baldur's Gate Coming to iPad? Yes, Please

Enhanced Edition of RPG classic not only in development for the PC.

Looking at Baldur's Gate on the iPad makes more sense than one might originally think.

When everyone else was playing Baldur’s Gate on PC, I was still catching up on games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (VI). It’s fantastic to see Overhaul Games bringing back Baldur’s Gate for its legion of PC fans and, for folks like myself, also to iPad.

Overhaul Games, founded by a bunch of ex-BioWare employees, is working on Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. This version of the game reportedly sports an “improved” Infinity Engine, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack, a brand-new character and a new “adventure.”

Though details on the iPad version are scarce, the screen shots available so far look awfully nice--it seems like a perfect fit.

It’s not just the original game that’s getting an update, either. Overhaul Games is also working on a Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and has already dropped hints about ambitons towards a Baldur’s Gate III, possibly funded through Kickstarter, depending on reaction to these releases.

The iPad version, and presumably the PC version, as well, is scheduled for sometime this summer.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to play a big RPG on an iPad.

I want to touch Aerie. Crap, this is just Baldur's Gate 1? Okay, I want to touch... Khalid?

No... this is an illusion. A dream. A bad dream!

I love you, mate.

These games would have the potential to be something special all over again instead of just a nostalgia trip if they overhauled it even more.

I think the controls would work well enough even with the default UI, but I would never want to play a 100+ hour RPG on an iPad.

I'll say the same thing I said when I bought my Atari 2600: OMG I will never be bored again!!!

i promise mom, this will be the only thing i will ever want again.

Not exactly, my old man said it was too expensive so I got a paper route. When he took me to get it and saw I had no money for games (it only came with Combat) he paid for half of it so I could get a few. I still have the damn thing :)

So throw aside my 27 inch monitor, 56 inch TV to play on a 9 in touch screen? Not for me.

If the interface is done right sometimes these games gain a lot from multi-touch input. It's not it the same ballpark but plants vs zombies was like that. For me it's a good solution because I re-bought all of those old games for my pc but never play them because when I have PC time I play the newer stuff that's backlogged in my Steam account. This will give me something to play when I'm away from PC.

Fuck! Now I have to buy an ipad.

My thoughts exactly! Unless they port it to vita as well...

You are the man with the plan. I love the vita, if they brought it there... yes.

See, this is what I want. If not from an iPad, then from some similar portable device. It's what I'd even want from a Nintendo device (portable or otherwise). A platform on which I can quickly and easily and cheaply access all sorts of older games - from classic Nintendo games to fantastic CRPGs. A massive collection; not just the top couple dozen beloved games.

I would buy such a device instantly, knowing that I could enjoy solid, deep, interesting games (favorites and ones entirely new to my eyes) from days past. Whether waiting for someone in the car, sitting at a bus stop, idling at work, or lounging in the back yard.

Already got it for the Android, and it very clearly still needs some work.

I really like the Vita, but I'm not sure I want to play BG on a screen that small. They'd have to do some significant UI reworking to get it going. Something like a Dark Alliance style game might be a better fit for the Vita. Maybe if they get the BG3 dream going they can plan a Vita version from the ground up.

It would be awesome to see this on the Android platform as well. While I eventually would like to get an iPad (if only to play the games that haven't been released for Android), right now my Touchpad (with ICS) is working just fine.

Seems like a good fit for touch.

I just hope they're still optimizing for earlier generation iPads and that it's not going to chug on anything but the iPad3.

Wow, I'm actually thinking this is a great idea. It's far easier to point where you'd like your dudes to go, and what to do, than clicking I would expect. It might even be possible to play in real-time this way now that you have this much control. Awesome, about the only reason I'd possibly invest in one.

I have a feeling I'm going to be buying both the PC and iPad versions... and I don't even like the iPad.

Very Excite! Hopefully it won't be too long before Planescape: Torment makes the jump to iOS.

Another person here who loves the open source community work (in the form of GemRB in this case) to rebuild old engines to load the assets we already own (or can buy again if you've lost the discs, thanks to GOG etc) onto new platforms. GemRB even loads and saves games into the same file format as the original titles. Yes, you can move between an ARM tablet or even phone (iOS or Android) and PC and copy the saves to take your game with you as you play on either platform.
