Battlefield 3 Beta Finally Kicks Off Next Week

In the age of living breathing online games, with finding the perfect balance being an on-going process even when the game is live, feedback of this beta will influence online gameplay at launch for sure. BF:BC 2's crossplatform open beta/demo happend a month before release too and led DICE to a blanket increase of infantry weapon damage by 25%. That's a quite drastic shift in balance and gameplay.

I went from a K/D of 3+ in the open beta (I had a similarly high K/D in the epic month-long PS3 beta, which clocked in at over 200 hours) to a K/D of less than 2 at release due to that change. Low TTK (time to kill) shooters cannot be dominated by skillful players as much, hence they're so popular - because the broad audience prefers not to get dominated by the few.

@REIGN: You clearly don't use steam if this isn't an issue for you. Imagine if they stopped selling this at wal-mart and gamestop and you could only buy it in some shitty little store that's out of you're way and you won't use for anything else. Plus it'll cost more and you don't get almost any of the benefits you're used to, all because EA gets a slightly larger cut of the profits at that little store.

Being a part of this mainly just so I can see if my computer can handle it well

This is great! It will help me decide if I want this on 360 or PS3.

Cautiously optimistic, after BF2 was successful EA/DICE made all the wrong decisions, all the time.

And the obsession with persistent nonsense, was the reason for all the vehicle whoring and lack of tactical play.

I hope they have a system in place to manage who drives the vehicles and flies the aircraft. Maybe just make heli, jet and tank into (optional) kill streak rewards. There is so much potential in the people vs. vehicle, beyond just all out mayham, it just requires a careful implementation.

Let's hope it's not just Karkand 24/7 no vehicles, a.k.a Call of Duty.

Fucking cool can't wait to try it out and see if it runs on this computer :D

Alpha was great, can't wait to see what they've improved upon! Hoping they somehow changed the map layout because some parts could be pretty one-sided.

When putting some additional thought to it however.. Since 3D spotting is no longer applied to infantry that might actually fix the major problems that map had balance-wise..

I didn't realize that had changed since the alpha. I know a lot of people were complaining about it.

I will wait for this on Impulse and then if it's announced for Impulse I will change my mind and wait for it to be on GOG and if all else fails...I will start my own DL PC game service and wait for it come on there

So far, Origin has been a fucking nightmare. All I've done was pre order the game and I have been spammed with "YOUR ORDER HAS BEEN CANCELLED" even though I paid. I talk to EA, they say, "Oh ya, ignore those emails." WTF EA??????????????????????????

Yes I'm incredibly happy that the beta date has finally been announced, though they were really pushing it with their 'september' date, I wish we could see a new map.

Here's hoping they unlock a new one after a while or something.

Need to upgrade my PC so bad, but a vacay this week prevents that. At least I'll have the PS3 version to tide me over.

What? Last I heard 3D spotting has just been changed so you only see 3D spot markers, if you've got direct LoS (Line of Sight). Foiliage counts as breaking LoS too. Only vehicles get a constant 3D spot regardless of LoS.

Either I'm out of the loop (I doubt it) or you got your facts all wrong.

Same map is alpha...meh I'll wait for full release.

Same map as in the PC Alpha tested earlier this year that my PC did an ok job with. Got a bit bored with the map after a while though and you can bet the excess snipers will be helping their teams to a quick loss (on the consoles)

Hopefully this BF is not like other BF games slow & boring running around finding someone to kill

To be clear, the spot disappears once something moves between you and the enemy. It still applies to infantry.

i really didnt care for operation metro in the alpha. god i cant wait for the full release I WANT ME SOME CONQUEST!

The beta itself will contain the Paris-set Operation Metro map within the Rush game mode, which is an objective-based where players have to compete on separate teams to defend/blow up M-COM stations.

What? Fucking what? This was in the Alpha, and it sucked. I want Caspian Border Conquest, DICE. Not the same shit map where the Attackers are utterly worthless after taking the first two M-COMs.

Sweet. I defiantly will be playing this. Also I am really interested as to how/if my computer will run it.

does anyone think the new support class in BF3 is a bit weird…like without the med packs, i really can’t see me setting up shop camping with some bi-pod LMG and lasting very long. You die pretty quick if you stay in one spot on BFBC2….

Well, I guess this will help those of us who are on the fence about a PS3/360 purchase. I do wish developers would return to the days of calling a demo a demo.

Hence the nature of suppression fire in BF3. This isn't BC2.

you'd be surprised. When you fire at somebody it acts as suppressive fire, doesnt need to hit anything just needs to be in range of the person, it not only scores you points just for doing it while someone else nails the kill ( suppression assist ) but it also blurs the vision of whoevers recieving those shots.

If any class were to die alot for staying still it would be snipers this time round. While they sit there in their scopes a BRIGHT white light shines from it making them all the more visible. It only happens when your scoped so people will either have to learn to move or deal with losing alot.

I'm on the fence about using Origin. I think this beta will decide if I want to put up with it.

Just got my first gaming machine. Alienware Aurora i7 2600 GTX580

I'm about to make the jump from 6v6 MW2 on 360 to 32v32 BF3. Playing this shit on consoles wasn't even considered.

Look out for me, i'll be the one noob tubing across the map on respawn.

Do we know to what extent the LoS works? Does smoke and foliage break it? If not then shooting at triangles randomly would still work which is kind of a bummer.

I really don't know what all the steam winging is about either..

Plus points of steam: achievements? Who the fuck cares. Overlay, you can use the overlay on non steam games. Cloud: Only useful for single player games because most online games track you via login.

Disadvantages: Games are always like 30% more expensive and you get no box or manual and incur no delivery costs, how is that justified?

Also, If steam disappears from existence in the future, which may seem oh so unlikely now, but really you'd have said that about a lot of services that no longer exist, a few years can make a huge difference, then what? all your games are completely in limbo and you just lose them all more than likely. I'd rather have a CD and a serial. Even if i just have the serial, i can always find a way to download the game anyway.

The only major plus point for steam is that i can install games from the web so if i don't have the disc handy that's giid, and that it's probably easier to play with my steam friends.

@laserbolts It's called an analogy genius. Obviously an online store is different from a brick and mortar place. It's about not having everything under one roof. I don't want to have 6 different publisher specific programs or websites to manage my games. I want everything on steam. I want to shift+tab. I want steam guard, automatic updates, cross game trading and all the conveniences I'm used to. It's really petty of EA to not put their products on steam as well as origin. You can buy valve games on origin. Why not the other way around? This is the first step to activision and ubisoft making their own half-assed attempts at a download service.
