Borderlands: The Secret Preview of General Knoxx

We play a little chunk of Gearbox's upcoming Borderlands DLC.

You'll spend some time just rolling up this highway, blowing apart everything that gets in your way.
You'll spend some time just rolling up this highway, blowing apart everything that gets in your way.
After one good one and one bad one, Gearbox is just about done developing the third downloadable add-on for its 2009 release, Borderlands. The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, however, seems poised to make its predecessors look extremely shallow by comparison. I recently took a trip up to the 2K Marin offices to talk with Paul Hellquist, Game Design Director at Gearbox. We went through a few of the different parts of this new quest and, as a guy that's had a level 50 character sort of languishing around since the original retail release, I'm definitely looking forward to playing through it.

Of course, I could play through it right now. We left that meeting with a pair of hard drives containing level 50 characters and an early version of the DLC. But those characters aren't my character. Playing through that stuff with a basic Brick or Mordecai would be almost completely pointless, especially now that the level cap has been raised to 61. Apparently getting that done is a lot harder than just jacking up the number of levels and hoping for the best. With another 11 skill points to be earned, Gearbox claims those high-level characters start getting pretty overpowered. As a result, the developers have gone back in and made changes to the skill tree, tweaking a few percentages here and there to prevent your vault hunter from getting a little too good at killing everything.

Speaking of vaults and the hunting of them, the General Knoxx plot takes place directly after the game's main story. Once you've opened the vault and taken care of the game's final boss, you can start getting missions in T-Bone Junction, the first new zone you'll visit. Here you'll find Scooter, who's set up a new shop and is working on getting you some new vehicles. You'll also find out that you're the second-most-wanted "criminal" on Pandora, at least according to the Atlas Corporation. Atlas, it would seem, is returning to Pandora to take it back from lawless scum like yourself, so expect to see all sorts of new Crimson Lance enemies, like the Rocketeer, which, as you might expect, has a jet pack. There's also a medic, which will toss out a turret that heals nearby enemies. And a shock trooper, which attempts to roll you up quickly with electrical attacks. The enemy variety, from what we saw, looks pretty good.

Along with Atlas comes General Knoxx, who isn't too happy about his assignment and just sort of wants you dead as soon as possible. It sounds like you'll be fighting your way in his direction for main plot, with a grip of side quests thrown in to give you even more to worry about. At the end of it all lies a bunch of Atlas technology. Yeah, new guns. The DLC will offer one new rarity class, along with some new gun parts that allow for more unique effects. Players that don't purchase the DLC will still be able to see the new weapons, thanks to a patch that'll hit at the same time.

So new guns, new vehicles, a raised level cap, and a plot that picks up where the main game left off. When you spell it out like that, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx sounds like a pretty good idea. It'll be out for $10 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC soon. Be sure to watch our video interview for more info.

" I don't want to be here. This planet smells like hemorrhoids wrapped in bacon." How do they come up with this stuff? Borderlands is sick and I'm sure the creative minds behind this won't let us down. My soldier is gonna be like Jack Bauer.

I'll pick it up.  Moxxi was the worst DLC I have ever bought since the inception of DLC (horse armor included.) but this sounds good!

Everything smells good wrapped in bacon. You could wrap anything in bacon and I'll eat it.

I could not be more excited for this DLC.

Hopefully they'll add a toggle for Brick's berserk scream so I will be able to hit level cap with him.  God he's annoying.

Good to hear I'm not the only one who has figured out how to destroy everything using pistols. Honestly, I got to the point where my pistols felt way over-powered with Mordecai, but still a lot of fun.

"All classes are being used equally" is bullshit. I have seen 2... maybe 3 Brick users.

Looking forward to the upcoming DLC...Zombie Island was pretty good; The Thunderdome DLC was toooo long and repetitive. Either way, I always have a lot of fun in multiplayer co-op with my firends.

Wow, if it's only $10 and if it gets me around 4 of 5 hours of play, I am so there.  I'd love to get some really challenging enemies and I remember the Crimson Lance was a lot of fun the first time through.

@ApolloJ85: I seriously doubt that. While it would definitely be nice, the odds of Gearbox doing that before even announcing an actual release date or even releasing a trailer are very, very slim.

@ApolloJ85: No shit....well that's good news! I was looking into it early today and at that point it, tomorrow's release was all speculation. Wonder why they're releasing it like this, though.

I think the guys sayin "only ten dollars??? great deal!!" are Gearbox employees.  10 dollars is pretty fuckin standard.  And while I think post release support is nice, three DLC packs for 30 bucks in such a short amount of time seems a little suspect. You really telling me they couldnt have varied the environments a little more and included more than one vehicle on the disc?  I mean, what did they spend the development time on??? Variations of Skags?

Correct!  61 is in fact an ODD number.  Tell him what (s)he's won Johnny! ............Johnny? ....Damn it Johnny!  Get your shit together! I'm trying to run a show here.  *So unprofessional....*.

Well, according to Kotaku, "
"Players should be pleased with the addition of ultra-rare, super-powerful weapons, new vehicles, including one all four players can ride at once, and nearly 30 new villains to kill in creative ways. Be warned, however, that Gearbox has also tweaked the enemy AI, so don't expect these new guys to be pushovers. "

Not to mention over 5 hours of level grinding in whole new areas, a last boss you can do loot runs on Baal style, and now dudes can walk and talk at the same time because they found a way to make that work with the engine.

Sounds like $10 worth to me.

Also, Zombie Island had whole new environments and enemies, and even Moxxie had new music and voice work if nothing else.

Umm, 10 dollars is ABSOLUTELY worth it for the content that is in this pack.  10 dollars may be a standard price for post-release DLC, but its the amount of content that makes this a good deal.  I think it is analogous to the Broken Steel add-on for Fallout 3 in terms of the amount of content added and even the type of additional content.  If you don't think that it is worth it, don't buy it.
