Call of Duty Elite Actually Doesn't Sound Totally Terrible

If you were going to buy all of the DLC anyway, it's actually kind of a deal.

Whether you want it or not, Modern Warfare 3 is coming--and it's going to be huge this year. Again.
Whether you want it or not, Modern Warfare 3 is coming--and it's going to be huge this year. Again.

Activision has discussed a subscription service around Call of Duty for years, but it's finally coming together this year with Call of Duty Elite. The initial response wasn't great, to say the least. People, perhaps rightfully, feared Activision would lock formerly free content behind a paywall.

Activision kept saying that wouldn't happen. This weekend at Call of Duty XP, a massive fan event held in Los Angeles, the publisher seemed to to have mostly made good on that promise.

Call of Duty Elite will set you back $49.99 a year, $10 less than a (new) Xbox Live Gold subscription. Purchasing all of the DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops--four map packs at $15 each--would have cost you $60. In that sense, Activision's offering players a cheaper deal, they just need to pay up front. This is being called the "premium membership."

The free version of Call of Duty Elite features stat tracking ala Bungie.net, integration with Facebook, clan support and applications for your mobile devices.

The company said the DLC "season" for Modern Warfare 3 will be nine months long, with monthly DLC made available for premium members. Additionally, premium members gain access to daily competitions for both in-game and real-world prizes, a round-the-clock competition calendar, up to 24 minutes of recordable HD video and access to Call of Duty TV.

Call of Duty TV will feature original video content related to--you guessed it--Call of Duty. Ridley Scott Associates (yes, that Ridley Scott) is working on Friday Night Fights, where rivals fight it out, while actors Will Arnett and Jason Bateman collaborate for a program called n00b Tube. There's another one slated, Cocked Hammers, that we don't have any details about yet.

I don't usually end stories with a question, but are you going to signing up?

Not paying for it, but I see the sense in it. They are a business first and foremost anyway.

Yeah this all sounds fine and dandy, but at the end of the day CoD is just 1 game. Activision is relying on people to exclusively play their game and nothing else for eternity. CoD doesn't sit in my disk tray forever, and it's kind of egotistical of the developer/publisher to expect me not to play anything else.

...egotistical? They don't expect you to have CoD sit in your disk tray forever, they expect people who have CoD sitting in their disk tray forever to have CoD sitting in their disk tray forever. That's who they expect to pay, and that's who wants to pay. They know that those people don't play much else. It's the whole point of this thing.

At this time there seems to be a dearth of pertinent information to make a decision.  How many map packs?  Klepek is assuming four based on Black Ops, but there is no guarantee that MW3 is going to be identical.  Perhaps my biggest problem is paying for something sight unseen.  Would you do that with anything else?

The only thing that interests me out of any of this is the discount with the map packs, because I'll buy all of them either way, so I suppose I should subscribe.

It's probably a reasonable deal if you plan to buy all the DLC. And if you like CoD enough to do that, great. It'll probably be really fun.

I, on the other hand, get bored with CoD 2 months after it comes out. So I haven't bought a DLC pack for a CoD game ever, since none have kept my interest long enough for me to do so.

Maybe not as bad on PSN and PC should never have gotten the paid DLC bug. But paying for XBL gold and this is just to far out.

A deal? Are you kidding? COD games are good for about six weeks, before the racism, homophobia, wanna-be rappers and DJs, and inane screaming children drive you away until the next year's game. Why would I pay almost as much as the game itself cost just to get some more crappy content that becomes crappier over time? The problem with COD content remains the problem it has always had - the game comes out today, three months later you get some new maps (with only nine months left in the game's life span). Then more content comes out three months later. Same price as before, but with only six months' left. Then more content comes out three month's later - but only with three months left before the next game.

If they were releasing all the content up front, it'd still seem kind of shitty (why not just include it in the game and charge more), but then you'd get a full year of use out of it. Releasing it over time, where the value of each new piece is diminished by the pending migration of the whole world to the next game, makes it not so much a deal. If it were $15 (which is what I, for some reason, was expecting - I thought I heard that somewhere), I might consider it. Not anymore.

Not only am I not buying "elite", but this article may have just dissuaded me from getting or playing MW3 altogether.

Infinity Ward has a shitty DLC release record.  They only released one DLC pack for MW1 and only two DLC packs for MW2 (one of which featured mostly recycled content from MW1).  If this were a Treyarch CoD game, I might consider signing up since they have a good track record of releasing a lot of high quality DLC for both CoD:WaW and CoD:Blops.  I would watch out for a lot of the DLC that Infinity Ward releases under the premium subscription plan to be recycled maps from earlier games in the series.

Since Call of Duty Elite is free (with no strings attached), with the exception of the DLC related premium service, I'm actually considering subscribing to this. In the long run it will be cheaper to subscribe than to purchase the DLC individually. Look, it all lies on the gamer themselves. Do you plan on purchasing MW3 DLC? If not, then fine. If so, why not save some cash? Either way it's a win-win for everyone involved.

Here's what I still don't get. Why is the DLC released nine months into the game the same price as that released three months into the game?

For $15, you get some maps when the game has 9 months of life left (still lame, because if it was released on launch day, you'd have more variety and a year of life left). A quarter later, it's another $14. Same price, but the content only has six months of life left. Another quarter after that, it's still $15 for more maps, but they only have three months of life left. The value quickly diminishes with each release.

That they've basically made this an annual release that everyone migrates to eliminates the "here's more content!" value that would otherwise possibly exist partway into the life of the game. This game only has a year of legs - put that content up front on day fucking one. It's not like Counter-Strike, where releasing something six months down the road means you'll get nine years of use out of it instead of nine-and-a-half years.

If they did this on launch day, have such a problem with it. If you play a lot, then $3 for a map that you're probably going to enjoy several hundred times is not bad at all - if you're going to enjoy it for a full year.

What I'd definitely pay $50/yr for is some sort of filtered play system that kept the homophobes, racists, rappers, a screeching children, and wanna-be-DJs out. They are the one single reason I can't last more than a few weeks in COD before I quit. In fact, I'd pay $100 for that.

This fucking age of endless DLC needs to end. Sweet deal my ass.

Just keep some of the maps out of the final release, churn out a helmet or jacket for your character every month, and somehow, Activision manages to squeeze 110$ out of everyone for a single game, only to pull the exact same shit next year.

This is getting out of hand.

Well said my man.

With the way they put out DLC for games like this they are doing more then holding back maps from release. I am not a huge fan of COD and have never bought a map pack, but if they are going to put out as many maps as they did for blackops then they are putting in a lot of work, and giving the players a great value.

There is a time to bitch about shitty DLC, but this isn't one of them.

this is not great value.
i remember paying 30 dollars for an expansion and getting an entire game on top of my game.

This is really more then an expansion. Over the course of its life you will get about 20+ maps. I remember buying expansions for BF2 for about 50 bucks to get a few new maps, a new vehicle, and a couple of different weapons.

This is just an expansion pack gradually released over the course of a year.

For fifty bucks I could by one or several brand new games... I don't think I like the fact that for that money all I get is a few new maps and stat tracking and features that other games offer for free... maybe not at this caliber... but I still don't like CoD enough to justify paying that much for their dlc.

But you'd never have caught me paying for map packs any other time either. So I guess I'm not the target for this stuff.

On a side note. This is only for hardcore COD players and those of us that plan to buy all the map packs. If you do not plan to buy any MW3 DLC this is obviously not for you.  I know it's super cool to rage against COD and DLC in general, but if you are not going to buy it....why get all pissy about it?

If you  were planning on buying every single map pack and the total amount for all of them is $50 or more, this sounds like an okay deal. If not, then it seems like a waste of money to pay $50 up front and not get your money's worth. Personally, I don't plan on getting it.

Well said my man.
Yep, I'm well tired of it myself. Video game companies have managed to slowly nickle and dime us so much over the years that we've basically ended up in a system of never-ending payment. You want this month's new maps? Give us 15 dollars. Oh, you want the next month's too? 15 more dollars please. Like an additional game mode? Please give us 15 more dollars.

Remember when shit used to cost 5 and 10 dollars? Now 5 dollar anything on Xbox Live is basically extinct, 10 dollar stuff is even becoming a rarity. Every single time there's a slight uptick in price, people justify it, even the games press that is supposed to hold these folks' feet to the fire, as "not really being that bad." But when does it become bad? How many times to we have to pay a little more, a little more, a little more, until it becomes "actually kind of bad"?

It makes me chuckle when I read some threads about the oncoming generation, and how so many people don't want a new generation of consoles yet because they don't want $70 games. Guys, look at these endless DLC schemes. You're already spending more than 70 dollars on games.

Glad i never got into this dude bro shooter, and i am glad BF3 is coming.

Edit- I should clarify before the COD fanboys go ballistic, if you enjoy COD and have fun playing it then awesome for you, i find it to be incredibly bland, boring and people in the public games take it far too serious for me, i do enjoy the SP portion and the horde type mode interest me, i am just glad i never bought into the series past COD 2 because of the incredible milking they are doing, i think this whole elite thing is ridiculous and way way way overpriced, i don't think the series is SHIT it's just not for me so the fanboys can put down the pitch forks and if you are a COD fanboy who is shrugging off BF3 because its your favorite games "competition", give it a chance, like how i gave COD a chance 4 times.

These map packs arent worth the money, they should only be like 5 dollars.
a 5 man dev team could make a whole map a week. and seeing as they are a large developer it probably only takes them a week to make one map pack.

lol do i look like a fool?

this is a joke, i could have seen them maybe getting away with this in MW2 because of the crazy hype and all but now with the COD franchise being on the downhill i just cant imagine people being willing to spend that amount of cash on one game upfront.

i mean didnt they only release two map packs for MW2? thats $30 so do you really want to pay an extra $30 a year for what will basically be a new model skin of something even more trivial like a call sign or emblem?

is it just me or does activision want to drive this franchise into the ground?

Dude...for a few maps...49 euro's. Just no..for that money i want to see more then just 'maps'. Looking how Borderlands did with real content. New weapons, new lands to explore, new quests etc. That my friend is real DLC not what Activision is doing i like to call it nickle and dime, get all the money out of everyone to the last drop. People all still wearing pink shades since this is not quality. A lot of people will be playing BF3 like me.
