Capcom And Namco Team Up For Crossover Fighting Games

Street Fighter X Tekken announced at Capcom Comic-Con Panel.

Weird, right?
Weird, right?
Rumors first started cropping up back at EVO a couple of weeks ago, and now Capcom and Bandai Namco have made it official: the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises will collide next year via a pair of upcoming fighting games.

Capcom mainly discussed its side of the conflict, which will be called Street Fighter X Tekken. That's "Street Fighter Cross Tekken" if you're saying it out loud, sort of like Namco X Capcom, the crossover RPG that Namco released on the PS2. The upcoming fighter will be a two-on-two tag battle game, and so far Ryu and Chun-Li are confirmed for the SF side while Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams are set on the Tekken side. Dan also makes an appearance in the trailer, but that's not exactly confirmation that he'll appear in playable form. Capcom's game will run on the same engine technology that powered Super Street Fighter IV.

Namco will also develop and release a crossover fighter. If naming conventions hold, this game will probably end up going by Tekken X Street Fighter. That's how Capcom and SNK handled it when they did a similar character swap for Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom. But all of that is unconfirmed at the moment and no actual details on this game are available.

I was a serious Tekken fan early on, but once Tekken 4 hit, that and the subsequent sequels felt like they were quickly losing their way. But the characters themselves are solid, so I'm at least interested to see what Capcom does with them. I'm... a bit less interested in seeing what Namco's developers do with the Capcom characters.

Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but no release date has been given at this time. Here's the game's first trailer.

We must be playing different games cause outside of Law, King, and the animals, the Tekken guys all just seem like generic characters. "
Compared to the archetype characters in SF, yeah I'd say they're much more memorable.

Street Fighter X Tekken will play like Street Fighter
Tekken X Street Fighter will play like Tekken
tbh, I WANT TO PLAY BOTH, and see SF characters tekken style and vice versa =(

After reading the comments hear I just want to state a few things that might change some peoples minds.

When you're judging a fighting game, in my opinion, you should judge it on the fighting system and push the extra features (I'm looking at you, Tekken 6 scenario campaign) to the side. Since Tekken 5, the Tekken games have been improving upon the Tekken 3 formula, that high point you keep talking about? The Tekken 6 fighting engine is better, improved over the Tekken 3 engine. Tekken 4, admittedly, kinda sucked and was weird, but when they made 5 they threw the stuff out that didn't work well and improved upon the Tekken 3 formula instead.
I just find pointless Tekken hate annoying, so I was hoping to try and clear that up a little, I'm sure many of you will still hate Tekken though, but hey, I tried.

As for why they aren't making Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat instead... umm, I'm pretty sure the Mortal Kombat team is busy working on the new, awesome looking Mortal Kombat game. Did you guys forget about that or something? It would be ridiculous to be working on both the new Mortal Kombat and a crossover game at the same time, and if they did attempt to, both games would most likely suffer for it.

Anyway as for my own opinion, I am STOKED about this. I'll definitely pick up the Tekken version, and most likely give the Street Fighter version a go too. I've been wanting to get into Street Fighter for a while now, and this is the perfect thing to get me into it.

Also, did Kazuya sprout wings in that trailer? Does this mark the return of Devil Kazuya? That would be pretty sweet.

It's an interesting experiment.  I think I'm more curious about Namco's game than the Capcom version, simply because I'm more of a Tekken/Soul Calibur fan.

Jeff mentioned this in his list, because Mortal Kombat isn't big in Japan where Tekken and Street Fighter are.

People already have Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.  I think this is a chance to do something new and see a crossover between two of the biggest franchises.  It ain't the Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter crossover that fuels nerd boners but I'm certainly interested in how good it is.  Man if they do a good job of delivering it could along with MK9 solidify fighting games again.  Really I'm most interested in a game finally tackling the opposite characters in respective game's engine problem or actually mashing two different games in a balanced manner.

Read the article. Namco is making one using the Tekken 6 engine, and Capcom is making one using the SSFIV engine. "
I know but it just seem like two more similar franchises could have been used. I just thought that Tekken and Street Fighter don't match up. "
don't think they do very well either.  SNK vs Street Fighter....or whatever it was is fine I think.  X-Men vs Street Fighter is fine. Marvel vs Capcom is awesome.  And then there was that Capcom vs game on the Wii that looked pretty good but I don't have a Wii thus didn't play it.  But Tekken has pretty different mechanics...and obviously one is 3d and Street Fighter is really only successful in 2d imo.

But, that being said, I'm kinda interested in seeing how Tekken vs Street Fighter will look. More-so than Street Fighter vs Tekken.

Street Fighter's characters have been really prominent recently -- two Street Fighter IVs, Marvel vs. Capcom, and now two more with Tekken? People might disagree with me, but I feel Capcom are getting close to what Activision have been doing to Guitar Hero. That's not to say I'm not interested, because I am a little, but...

@MjHealy: They're just fighting mechanics, so this was really the only logical way to do it if they were going to do a cross-over between SF and Tekken to appeal to fans of both games.  I'm not quite sure that they were actively searching for a cross-over of a game that was similar to how theirs operates.

Well... You'd actually need to scratch the fatalities part... That's not Capcom's style when it comes to fighting games.

SNK would have been the safe choice but if you want to talk about garbage Japanese fighting games KOF is definitely the king nowadays. Of course if we factor in US  we'd have to give the crown to a different franchise if you catch my drift.

So if namco follows Capcom's suit of doing 2 v 2 matches, would Tekken X Street Fighter be the indirect sequel to Tekken Tag?

Tekken is the premier 3D fighting game today, I don't know what you're talking about.   Anyways, I think this is a good venture for both franchises being that they are the most popular in their respective categories. As Jeff mentioned I'm more interested in the Capcom version rather than the Namco one though. Capcom has been on a roll with excellent fighting games that pretty much lead the 2D fighting scene, and it'll be interesting to see how they change Tekken characters to fit the mold.  It's a bit funny that there was a Virtua (Street) Fighter spoof on April 1st yet Tekken is actually making that come true.
