Come Join the Giant Bomb Design Team

Dave's going on vacation for a bit, so Alexis is gonna need some help.

Think you could have designed and coded the CSS for the new giantbomb.com? Then I might have a job for you.

Jeff said I had to put a picture of myself here so I am just gonna use this one created by buzz_clik
Jeff said I had to put a picture of myself here so I am just gonna use this one created by buzz_clik

I'm looking for a Senior Technical Designer with strong creative skills and proven experience building websites using HTML, CSS, and Javascript. The candidate will be joining a small front-end design team that creates, designs, and then actively codes those designs into working pages. You'll be working on all the CBSi Games sites including Giant Bomb, Comic Vine, GameFAQs, and GameSpot.

The responsive nature of Giant Bomb uses some advanced CSS methods including media query breakpoints, multiple mobile device support, HTML5 video skinning, font icons, sass functions/variables, :before:after content, and retina support. A good understanding of these techniques are of paramount importance.

And although I can't require you to win a Mortal Kombat Scrub League or play Halo for 24 hours to raise money for the kids, a love of gaming would be nice.

Must Haves

  • Great Photoshop Skills
  • Advanced HTML and CSS coding skills with a strong emphasis towards responsive and multiple device development.
  • Portfolio with live examples. Dribbble.com and github.com accounts are a plus.
  • Experience working in a templating system like Django, Jinga, Smarty, Twig, Mustache, etc.

Nice to have

  • Experience with css precompilers such as Sass/Compass or LESS.
  • Javascript skills for use in prototyping.
  • Familiarity with Git or other source code version control system.

If you're interested, apply at the CBS jobs site here.

This position has been filled. More details coming soon. Thanks for all the interest. <>

@alexisg Responsive workflow is something I'm looking at right now so I was wondering if you're using anything in particular for rapid prototyping in markup? Or is it just hand written from scratch?

Hahaha.

Well, let me start by telling you about Google Adwords campaigns... and how you can sign up for our monthly newsletter! And how to cut your cost per conversion by over 50%! And how to boost your social media engagement! Let me tell you a thing or two about Content Management Systems.

I know, sometimes my job seems super-scummy.

Um I took a computer science class last semester where we briefly coded with HTML in notepad++ does that count?

Honestly that helps a lot more then a program that dose the work for you, the first step to programming is knowing how to code by your self.

I started learning C++, and just learning how the general flow of design was, it was very easy to pick up Javascript, Java, Action Script, HTML, CSS, and a lot of other things.

Not related to your comment at all:

I was using Microsoft Visual C++ at first, and basically just copying and pasting from Google, but never really learned how to code. But as soon as I lowered my expectations at first from a Stealth 3d Platformer. To a text based rouge like, it was much easier to program myself and learn, as I did. And from there I just kept learning new things. That was 10 years ago.

Yeah I had grand plans of creating my own FPS (along the lines of the first Doom) but then I realized what I was learning in that class wasn't nearly enough to do such a thing. :(

Too bad that I'm currently in the process of studying all of those things and just getting started with my portfolio (career changes are tough). I would love to go up there and learn a thing or two from all you guys (and gals?). Maybe in the future?

Those images are so well balanced and amazingly designed.

I am even balancing out this post by putting my text on the right hand side, opposite my images.

I have great designing ability, and i am a photoshop wizard.

I remember when I was in high school and HTML and CSS was in it's infancy (mid 90s) I was so good at coding. I made websites all weekend for various clients and I really thought I would do it as a career. College came and I chose to focus on Photography/Production/Cinematography as a career emphasis and didn't keep up with the new innovations of web 2.0 and all the crazy shit that had been implemented in the time I was away. Man, it is IMPOSSIBLE to jump back in. The stuff that you web developers do nowadays is so far beyond anything that was being done 10-15 years ago, it's like a completely different thing entirely. The stuff done on this site alone boggles my mind.

So yeah, good luck to any one who is fortunate enough to land this job. If Drew or Vinny ever need help, I've got 10 years experience working for network/cable TV as a DP/Producer/Shooter... I'm your guy!

I'm just waiting for the day when they announce they're looking for a manga reviewer for Comic Vine. You should see the growing sales of manga series. ONE PIECE alone sold over 27 million units last year, and released only four volumes that year.

Is MS Paint an acceptable substitute for Photoshop? I have quite the portfolio of stickpeople work here on Giant Bomb. As for the coding languages, I could probably take a cursory glance and make a few confused noises before breaking down and sobbing uncontrollably. I know, it's a wonder I haven't been snatched up already.

Oh man! If I had just a little bit more experience and a slightly better portfolio, I would totally apply for this job. I've done some freelance work as a web developer and bent Twitter Bootstrap to my will several times, but I certainly haven't done anything on the scale of GB.

Well, they're asking if you think you could design something like giant bomb, not if you have. So it might be worth it to apply with whatever you've got in your portfolio now.

I feel you man, although they generally ask for a higher caliber than is needed. I'm a full time student, so I wouldn't even remotely be able to do it. I say go for it man. Worst you can get is a no.

Dang, I don't have nearly enough web skills... I'm an Industrial Designer and I've only done a fair amount of front-end web and app design (though no more than turning my photoshop files into basic HTML & CSS). I've not made the jump to learning Javascript or fully responsive sites. Ha I love making physical things too much. Alas, my dreams of helping build the Bombastica with my skills may never happen! (...that is, unless you need a guy to design swag for the community? Maybe someday!)

Aw, but if you meet all the listed requirements, why not just try (if you really do want to work for GB)?

Haha, because picking up my entire life in Canada and moving it all the way to San Fran for a short-term contract position when I already have a steady full-time job is probably the worst idea ever, even if it probably would be a lot of fun over there in the process.
