Dawnguard’s Finally Out on PC, But PS3? Well...

Performance issues blamed for DLC's delay on PlayStation 3.

The amount of content in Dawnguard means PS3 players really are missing out right now.
The amount of content in Dawnguard means PS3 players really are missing out right now.

Dawnguard, the first expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is now available on PC for $19.99. It is not, however, available on PlayStation 3, and it’s unclear when that will change.

The reason: it's not ready.

“We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3,” said the company in a statement on its blog. “We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse. “

We have come to expect, and to some extent forgive, some of the issues that plague the traditionally ambitious Bethesda Game Software releases. Skyrim had serious problems on PlayStation 3, however, which is why it technically wasn’t part of our Game of the Year award for Skyrim last year.

“We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC,” continued the statement. “We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.”

The ps2 was a bad console to program for. Extremely weak, but it sold extremely well. So developers went out of they're way to develop for it. Even though the xbox was a good 2-3 times more powerful. Granted, morrowind never came out for ps2. Would've probably been worse than the shotty max payne or splinter cell ports.

But then this generation. The microsoft console techincally more powerful than the sony. Just as last generation. 1ghz core vs 3 3ghz cores, no amount of individual spus are going to make up for that 6ghz loss. But.....this time. Sales went away from sony. So developers are less apt to spend alot of resource money developing for it.

Sony better be smart this next generation, just partner with intel or amd. And just make it a muscle car. Put a v8-v10 in it, instead of putting a 3 cylinder geo metro engine and trying to turbo charge it by making it efficient.

Get ready for horrible ports that can't run on your system that is 10x more powerful than the consoles.

Still PC exclusives make it for it 10x better

I just dont understand why Sony cant go with more mainstream hardware. Its just such a waste. None of their hardware (CPU/GPU/Memory pools) have ever brought anything worth while to the table. They just cant seem to grasp that being developer friendly is hugely important.

Is this a tacit admission that their ps3 ports have been utter shit up to this point? I'm still rankled that You bombers gave a game that was 30% broken (because the ps3 v. was 100% broken) game of the year recognition.

I guess PS3 owners have to make the decision for them selves which would be worse, a stable game with no Vampire Lords or a game that is fucked like Marseillus Wallace but has crossbows. Tough call, but I admire Bethesda's Gumption. Thinking about it, they probably took M$'s deal originally hoping the extra month would be enough to wrap up the PS3 end. Well played, if I'm right.

I play skyrim on the ps3. This sucks, and it's lame that bethesda can't figure out how to use the ps3 like other top tier developpers have.. That being said, i hope they take their time to figure it out because skyrim was kinda broken on the ps3 and i'm in no rush . As long as the final product works, they can take all the time they need.

Funny they didn't do that with vanilla Skryim on PS3.

Do you blame the people who have a hard time learning the difficult architecture that is used on no other platform (and strongly rumored to not be used in the PS4 because it's such a pain to use) or do you blame the people that decided to use that architecture?

It's like blaming people for having a hard time designing websites for Internet Explorer.

Should've done the same thing when the full game came out, and the GOTY edition of Fallout 3. Bethesda's games don't like PS3.

You said it was pathetic that they haven't mastered coding for the PS3 yet so if you don't know the ins and outs of game development then thats a completely fucked statement.

You have NO idea why they might be having problems and neither do I so to say that they are "pathetic" is just stupid. Who knows there could be tons of reasons as to why they haven't got it right for the PS3 yet.

It is pathetic when they're one of the only (maybe even the only) developers shipping busted games for an extremely popular platform. It's not like Skyrim just had minor framerate issues on PS3, you can't just excuse it that easily as being a so-so port.

Bethesda drones gonna drone?

Remember right when Skyrim was announced and the first thing everyone asked, 'Is it a new engine?'

Yup, we-didn't-Bugthesda straight up lied about the engine. It's still a piece of outdated crap of a Gamebryo engine that was conceived at the times of Morrowind. For all the flak CoD receives for using a engine from 2002...we-won't-Bugthesda does worse and still gets praised to high heavens. Games like Dark Souls are worth your money...Skyrim is a huge meh that's only worth $7.50 during a Steam holiday sale.

These "exclusive early DLC" debacles need to stop. I don't know how much money is exchanging hands in these sorts of deals, but honestly its isolating half of your fanbase. You can't just show up a month later saying, "you still want this?".

And now, to add salt to the wound, this shit happens. As a PS3 owner (haven't experienced these "crippling" bugs at all), they've lost my purchase.

I would have revisted this if I had played it on 360. Lesson learned. I am never going to play a newly released bethesda joint on PS3. Tho I must say I did not have any issues with New Vegas. I also played new vegas for 20 sometihng hours and not 80.

They really should have just balled up, and apolagized for this one. Would have really helped their case. It's their fault that they wrote code that biases Xbox knowing that it was going to be a multiplatform release. It's not just pomp and circumstance like their making it out to be.

Argh! completely torn in half by this issue! On the one hand, the wait completely sucks, why should PS3 owners be the last to access the dlc? At the same time, if the delay means a better experience then I feel it could be totally worth it...Assuming it is an actual delay and not a Duke Forever delay

I think there is somewhere between these two. Sony has some great looking games on their platform. But it is also Sony's responsibility to have people who can come into developers and help them smooth things out with their games on ps3. Sony really needs a small team of devs from the first party who could help developers understand the way the ps3 works. It would help everyone involved. Its not that different than what companies who license out game engines do.

@Szlifier: There's alot of multiplatform games that are fine on the PS3, Bethesda is a huge company and have all ready had 2 other games + dlc on the PS3, so its not like the are totally new to the architecture of the PS3. Theres really no excuse. Other than the cynical one: they can see the PS3 version probably sells the worst and they have a deal with MS. So they can't really be bothered with the PS3 version.

Who didn't saw this coming? The PS3 is the weakest link in today's consoles, even if it's the most powerful machine and, to my opinion, has the best I.P., it still has the worst multi-platform titles due to its dev kit being, according to people, the hardest to code.

People should know what they're getting into by buying a PS3 as their only home console.

Oh it took them years, did it? Not like Bethesda would've had any practice with Oblivion, or Fallout 3 (which was also fucking broken), or New Vegas...

And yeah, Treyarch, because the PS3 version of Black Ops was pretty okay and close to the other ones, because Treyarch is a company that learns, unlike Bethesda. I could also throw Platinum into that mix as well considering Vanquish led on PS3 and was slightly better on it.

It must be in such a state that every time someone at Bethesda is fires up the PS3 version of Dawnguard, the PS3 explodes. Because that would be the only explination why Bethesda was perfectly happy to release the PS3 version of Skyrim in it's pre-alpha state, but waits to release Dawnguard because they're not happy with it

I still find it strange they are having this much trouble with the PS3. I played Oblivion on the PS3 which was better then the 360 version mostly due extra time they had on it. I also experienced almost no issues with my launch PS3.

Then I played Fallout 3 on my PS3. Which at the time I think PS3 was considered to be the less buggy console version. Think it suffered from some worse performance issues in the late game but the 360 had more quest/game breaking bugs. I also played that on my launch PS3 with pretty much no issues.

I have since switched to PC gaming. So it really seems weird to me that they are now terrible at making PS3 games. My vanilla PC experiences of Oblivion and Fallout 3 were fairly comparable to the PS3 experience as far as stability is concerned.
