Diablo III Sells 3.5 Million Copies In its First Day Alone

Can you even imagine the stat numbers for enemies killed and loot collected thus far? In the parlance of Carl Sagan, it's got to be in the "billions of billions."

The server issues that plagued Diablo III's first 48 hours or so were certainly unfortunate, but it turns out that Blizzard really did have a good reason for not quite anticipating the server load it endured. After all, who could possibly have predicted that the game would sell 3.5 million copies in its first 24 hours? I mean, I'm sure we all thought it would do well, but that number is something else entirely.

That 3.5 million number doesn't even take into account the 1.2 million who received a copy of the game through the World of Warcraft Annual Pass program. All in all, that means 4.7 million people were at least capable of playing Diablo III on day one. Which is a lot, really.

All in all, 6.3 million copies have been sold/acquired in the week since the game's launch, which, according to Blizzard, breaks the "all-time record for fastest-selling PC game." I don't have my list of the fastest-selling PC games of all time handy, but I'll just assume that Blizzard did its homework before making that claim. Otherwise, they should be expecting a nasty phone call from Guinness.

Records or no records, Diablo III is unequivocally a massive, overwhelming success, and it's only been a week. I mean, I haven't even bought my copy yet. That's at least one more coming! Eventually! When I actually have time to play it...

How about, instead of losing your shit when people simply ask you to provide examples, you be less vague in the first place and give an example before people ask. And next time, maybe don't rage over such a simple question. I would tell you to go play a dungeon crawler you believe is better than Diablo 3 (which is fine, you're entitled to that opinion) but you never provided any examples so...go play Diablo 3 instead of attacking it (and its fans) so furiously.

I wonder how much this will really change. Ubisoft has already demonstrated that popular but not mega-popular brands like Assassin's Creed will get hurt in sales from always-on DRM. I think most companies are smart enough to realize that only people like Blizzard can get away with stuff like this. But it will be fun to see some execs try, anyway. (And by 'fun,' I mean horribly suck, especially if it's a game that I was previously looking forward to).

I wonder how many of those copies were bought by gold spammers. Every time I go into the General chat, I swear I see a new user gold spamming.

6.3 million copies.

It's not CoD numbers, but do we know where that stands in regard to fastest selling platform exclusives?

I suppose the competition would be Halo, earlier GTAs on PS2 and Nintendo products?

You're brilliant strategy of pirating a game in order to get around some feature you don't like is the reason developers on the PC came up with stuff like DRM in the first place.

You know what? Milk prices have been getting kinda high lately, I think I'll just start stealing it. Amazing solution, why didn't I think of this earlier.

Diablo 3 is one of the best games ever to be released, the only people trolling it are a) the people who don't own it and b) the people who were trolling it before it even came out. Either way they are retarded and should be ignored. BUY THIS GAME!

It makes me laugh how people complain about the always online DRM. It's Blizzard's game, they can do whatever they want..enjoy it or don't. If you have a problem with it, go fucking outside and do something else with your life besides sit down and play video games. Complaining about how a video game works is really something special. I'm sure some kid living in Chad really feels bad for you, because he's never seen a computer before in his life and worries about where he can get some bread.

@Humanity: Piracy and used games are a convenient PR scapegoat developers use to rationalize taking advantage of a short sighted and self-absorbed consumer group. Personally I very rarely pirate games because I'm patient enough to wait for price drops for games from companies I don't like. But I have zero problems with people pirating games from one of the big three of anti-consumer game makers.

But by saying you're OK with DRM and horrible launch issues because you like the game that much does in fact make you part of the problem.

Pirating in fact makes you a 100x worse than anyone that has "caved" and bought the game. You are basically stealing something. It doesn't matter that this is a game and it's a big bad company hurting gamers everywhere - you're stealing and thats shitty and theres no clever way of justifying it. You are the reason why PC games went into a decline and why developers don't want to develop for that platform because of people that justify any ill conceived reason for pirating all their games. In the past people pirated games because they came up with securecom and now you needed to have games in your drive and thats bullshit! Then they pirated games because Steam was a pile of shit and it ruined Half Life 2 for everyone. Now you're pirating games because of shitty DRM. I fully agree with all issues people have with DRM and those that dismiss it will have a rude awakening when their ISP does a week long repair on their lines or something happens that cuts their internet and they basically won't be able to access Diablo 3 past the login screen. Piracy is definitely not the solution and your high and mighty attitude about PR scapegoats and short sighted consumer groups comes off as juvenile at best. Even the ridiculous crazies that wrote all sorts of legal letters to Bioware about Mass Effect 3 are better off than you are because at least they tried to take legal action to prove a point while you're just a thief trying to justify stealing with ham fisted ideology.

Shocking? Nah. I'm somewhat split on this being a good or a bad thing. It does show that PC gaming is not dead, and games can sell like a motherfucker. But it also gives green light to all publishers that the worst possible DRM is accepted by the public. Or rather, no one cares enough.

So if people don't have a problem...what's the problem? It's not like Blizzard's passing oppressive or backwards legislation taking away peoples' rights, they're a game company that chooses to employ their product a certain way. Boohoo, you can't play their videogame when you don't have an internet connection. That's not a real problem. If you don't like their method of deploying their product, don't buy it and move on with your life...unless videogames are really that important to you. In which case, by all means waste your miserable life whining and stressing out about this issue.

@Dragon_Fire: If publishers draw the right lesson, it'll be that Diablo III is such a great game, consumers are willing to put up with crazy restrictions on triple A titles.

Unfortunately, I think most publishers will read it as 'consumers are willing to put up with crazy restrictions on triple A titles.', and so we're about to go into another round of crazy DRM schemes that only end up hurting us in the long run for average quality video games.

It's also important to note that's what makes Diablo III impossible to crack is not the traditional idea of DRM. Diablo III is impossible to crack because the important parts of the game aren't on your computer, they're on the central servers. It's like trying to pirate World of Warcraft - utterly pointless, because unless you can get to the central servers with a valid key/account, or a way to pirate the server software, it doesn't matter how you acquired your client. (I also wouldn't be surprised, and would be interested in hearing people's reaction, if they make Diablo III free to download and start charging a monthly fee to pay the game. You know that's where this is all going, right?)

In terms of the big picture, I find it really ironic and scary that the future of computing looks more and more like we're going back to the 1960s, with devices being dumb terminals and everything done off of central servers. This thing with Diablo III and other 'always-on' games is just another symptom of that trend.

People giving shit Blizzard cause they had a launch fiasco... haven't you learned it's all the same with every Blizzard release, that's why people who can't handle outages and reboots/shutdowns shouldn't be day one customers. Save yourself pain and buy the game a week or two later and everything should be fine.

I have many gripes with Diablo 3 but the launch problems were expected.

Always online DRM or not is a non issue for me, my net is up 24/week anyway weather I play or not, I do know that there are still people on dialup or unstable connections tho, so an offline mode would be appreciated as would be LAN support, tho I never really looked at Diablo games as single player games but online co-op games and that requires internet anyway.

People comparing D3's always online DRM to something like what Ubisoft did with AC need to use their brains. D3 has drop in drop out multiplayer, a friend's list thats linked to all three of their franchises, an auction house, achievements, and chat channels. Not to say there arent issues such as high latency and disconnecting, but comparing Blizzard's DRM to Ubisoft's is reaching far.

In Diablo 2 you could choose to make an offline or an online character. There are other people than myself that would be totally OK with being unable to access the auction and chat channels as a tradeoff for not having to rely on the stability of their servers or the ISP for playing a single player game.

You know what... I LIKE having my friends list well populated all the time. I like there always being a variety of games I could jump into with different characters. And I know some of my buddies would go off the grid if they had the option. I think the really classy thing for Blizzard to do would be to open up offline play and/or LAN play a year or so after the game's release, once there's not so much money to lose to piracy.

The difference between this and Ubi's bullshit is that forcing everyone to go online in this case legitimately adds to the gameplay and community. Yes, it's DRM too.

That many copies for a PC game is a game-changer, for better or worse.

If it makes devs/publishers consider making PC exclusives which wouldn't otherwise have been made, then that's great.  If it means games which we'd have been getting anyway will now have always-online DRM shoehorned into them then that's sucky.  If it legitimises a 'release it broken and fix it later' mentality then that would be unfortunate too - nobody should get the free pass Blizzard has been given for that.

Bit of a mixed bag.
So much ignorance in this post.
That's true, but you don't need to be so hard on yourself about it.
There's not one thing in your original post that makes a lick of sense but you're trying to defend it with a witty retort that sounds like something my four year old came up with.

@Chemin I think it says something about the game that people were willing to put up with some of the worst DRM since Ubisoft published the first Assassin's Creed for PC.
