I can wire up a home theater and put together an IKEA bookshelf like nobody's business, but I'm not quite what you would classify as “handy.” At least, not handy enough to build one of these totally incredible Atari 2600 joystick lamps as seen on Instructables. I'm going through these step-by-step how-to images of this thing, and there's not a single step that I think I could pull off myself. I barely understand what's going on. Once I got to step eight where it says “I found in the owner's manual that you should place shims into the kerf” I started to suspect that the dude was just making up words to mess with me. Like with the Ben Heck Xbox 360 laptops, I respect the DIY ethic and envy the practical knowhow that made this possible, but mostly I just want to know how much I'd have to pay someone to build it for me.
Because nothing classes up a space-age bachelor pad like a table lamp made to look like a giant video-game controller, amirite?
