Ed Boon Teases At Mortal Kombat's DLC Characters

The man behind MK has some ideas about what characters might return to Outworld as DLC.

Back in 2009—before they were purchased by Warner Bros. and changed their name to NetherRealm Studios--the Mortal Kombat team was finishing work on what would have been the first DLC character for their most recent release, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. The DLC character-- MK4's Quan Chi--was apparently finished and ready to be added to the game. Unfortunately, the completion of the DLC occurred around the time when parent company Midway was coming apart at the seams. Before the team could release the Quan Chi DLC, Midway was shuttered, and its studios and franchises were split and sold to the highest bidder. The finished character would never make his way to MKvDC.

Apparently, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon isn’t going to let DLC for the upcoming Mortal Kombat suffer the same fate as Quan Chi; he's getting the word out on DLC for the newest MK early. On Twitter this past week, Boon took some time out from trying not say whether there would be an exclusive character in the Xbox 360 version of MK (to match the addition of Kratos to the PS3 version) to ask his followers what Mortal Kombat character they would like to see added to the game via DLC. He also provided a short-list of Kombatants who could possibly make the jump into the new game.

In addition to the four above, Boon also mentioned Tanya from MK4 as a possible DLC Komatant.

== TEASER ==To be fair, we don’t know for sure if any of these characters are actually in line to make their way to MK via DLC. A Twitter message is no proper press release, and there is no confirmation that any of these characters are definitely coming to the game. But the list sounds plausible enough for DLC, and, if nothing else, shows off what kinds of characters Boon and the MK team are looking at as they decide what characters they'd like to add to the game down the road: secret characters, joke ninjas, and any fighter added to the franchise once the series went polygonal.

Though I think it's pretty clear which of Boon's suggested Kombatants would be the most likely choices for DLC. That's not a hard list to make. So... I did. Here's the list ranking which of Boon's suggested DLC Kombatants would be most worthy of a DLC-based return to MK.

1. Smoke (But A Robot)

I’m actually a little surprised that Smoke won’t be making his way into the new MK as a regular character. Introduced as a secret opponent back in MKII, Smoke made his way to the main roster in the release of MK3 as one of game’s playable robot ninjas. Definitely the top choice out of these characters, provided that he comes to the game with these two features.

1. Players can still press a button combo to turn Robo-Smoke into Human Smoke before the fight starts, just like in UMK3.

 2. Smoke comes with the fatality where he BLOWS UP THE DAMN EARTH.

2. Rain

Though Rain has since made appearances in both of the Mortal Kombat “anthology” games ( Trilogy and Armageddon), the best Rain appearance in the series is still his debut in UMK3, where he appears in the intro movie of the game but isn’t actually a playable character in that game. Oh, John and Ed! You guys and your screwing with arcade players!

Also of note: His name is Rain. And he’s a Purple Ninja. So he’s the Purple Rain. That's still funny.

3. New Guy

While the roster of new fighters (post-UMK3) hasn’t been nearly as memorable as the characters from the first three games, I’d still rather see them give a new character another shot, even as DLC. Or, at least, I’d rather see a new character than the other choices on this list.

4. Tanya

At the very least, I’d rather see a generic female character in MK before another bad male character. The MK franchise is enough of a boy’s club as it is. More dangerous ladies, please!

5. Kenshi

There are people out there who love Kenshi. It's true!

6. Shinnok

Shinnok answers the question, “Is there a Mortal Kombat antagonist lamer and less memorable than Quan Chi? NetherRealm would be better off trying to sell DLC for Fujin the Wind God.

If nothing else, the five characters that Boon suggests as possible DLC additions at least provide a sense of what kinds of fighters could get their Mortal Kombat debut via DLC. So, MK fans, what characters would you be interested in seeing as DLC? Would you pay to play as that guy on fire in the background of The Pit II?

Seems interesting.

Indeed, well put.

Robo/Human Smoke has to be included.  The dude is super-awesome (even if he's a bad Scorpion rip-off in UMK3).  I know that we all agreed to hate on the PS2 MK's (because they suck), but I always liked Kenshi.  Nitara was alright, too.  The other characters from that series overlap with too many of the original, more iconic characters to matter.

Kenshi is the only character design I've liked since MK3, so yeah him.
Posted by Sammo21

The more they start doing thing, the worse the game will be.

Posted by Hamz

I'd like to see them consider introducing more cameo appearances. Someone like Solid Snake, the Spy from TF2 or Master Chief and so on.

Posted by Liono88

I fully agree with the order of your list. I hope smoke makes a comeback as well.

Posted by Gav47

If Preston Marlowe was in MK I would be much more interested in MK.

OMG again with the BS. Why do people hate Quan Chi so much?

Not only Quan Chi but the PS2 era Mortal Kombat games.  Sure they weren't outstanding but they were good fighting games.

Too be fair Kenshi is nothing but Ermac without Ermac so I can see why he shouldn't be there.  Smoke is a classic, Rain is unique as hell as far as what he can do (from the Trilogy games anyway).

I could do without anyone else on there.  Tanya was crap to begin with and Shinnok would evoke too much of the MK4 story which means evoking a lot more shitty characters.
Posted by Sammo21

Yeah, just when I thought they were getting their crap in order Ed says this?  Yeah, going to be making the same mistakes again.

Preston Marlowe in Mortal Kombat? Amazing... though I would have preferred Haggard. :P

Posted by Make_Me_Mad

Reiko was pretty awesome in Armageddon, so I'd like him back.  Something about his getting up for round 2 via breakdancing won me over.

Posted by Aetheldod

Somehow Im less excited about this game as the months pass , now I think this franchise should be dead

Posted by MattBodega
@PhatSeeJay:  Yeah, Marlowe is the default image on the New Guy concept page, so he got a spot on the list. Still, I bet Bad Company could totally throw down against Scorpion.
Posted by RecSpec

Robo-smoke because his fatality was probably the easiest in the game.

Posted by Xeridae

How about no DLC because it's a fighting game and all characters should be included.

Fuck DLC I swear.

Posted by ImperiousRix

I like Kenshi.  Then again, I like a few PS2 era MK characters (being the games I mostly played in the series), so perhaps my opinion isn't valid.

I agree with you, but at the same time I can't blame companies for doing this sorta thing, game developing is a very risky business you release it and that's it, if it sold well great if it didn't there's not much you can do about it, at least with DLC devs have a way to get a little bit more money out of their huge investment.
Posted by skrutop

That's so weird.  This story popped up yesterday, then disappeared.  Now it's back!

Posted by Ramone

They're talking about DLC months before the game is even out? I'm sorry but fuck that. How about you put all those characters in the game from day one instead of trying to rip MK fans out of even more money.

Posted by Zvarri

Heh heh yeah man, put Blaze in there, 'cuz, then, you could be all like "who you gonna be?" and I'll be all "I'm gonna BLAZE man, haha" and then set the timer to 420, 'cuz that's hilarious.

Posted by neoepoch

...If Preston was the new guy for MK9, I'd be even way more stoked than I am already. I can just see it now...explosions everywhere, as far as the eye can see.

Posted by Rawrnosaurous

What no one wants meat to come back? LAME

Posted by sixghost

Well now I'm disappointed that Smoke isn't going to be in the game proper.

Posted by hermes

Thats the kind of BS that is making me disregard the new MK... Its nice that they are trying to go back to its roots after some really crappy ones, but selling characters and special move animations (yes, they are going to sell fatalities as DLC) is not the right PR move.

PS: And I liked Kenshi. It had interesting moves and was better than yet another ninja power ranger.
Posted by damswedon
Frost because I like Frost and she was one of the first  MK characters that I got a better than average grasp on since Scorpion.
Posted by Metal_Mills

Why do people hate Quan Chi? I liked him.

Actually human Smoke is in the game. The audio files that leaked some time ago already had one labeled as his entrance quote. Once again, Matt Kessler has no fucking clue about what he's talking about.
Posted by cooljammer00

Pfft, the blowing up the Earth fatality is the kind of goofy shit people like Jeff and I assume other fans of MK's glory days don't want anymore

His moves are lame, his design sucks, his fatalities were all garbage, and they needlessly tied him to other characters he had no business being tied to in the first place like the original Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shang Tsung and the Dragon King.

Agree with you brah.
It is like putting a cart in front of a horse. At least wait until the damn game in question is released before teasing. Or they should just name the 'new' guy as DLC.
Posted by Detrian

How about fuck you Ed Boon? This game is already fucked up enough with preorder only fatalities and shit.

Quan Chi represents the paradigm shift in Mortal Kombat when characters became more generic (Reiko) and far less memorable (Shinnok). It's not so much the character himself (though his goofy-assed "neck stretcher" fatality did him NO favors) as much as what he represents.
Posted by Shaanyboi

Gotta be honest... I fucking LOVE Rain.  That said, Smoke should be there.  And I do love Kenshi too.  I mean come on, blind warrior with Tai Chi-based telekenesis and a fucking samurai sword.  God damnit!

Posted by jonnyboy

Get back to me when he announces the game of the year edition.

Posted by empathe

No more MK4 characters, please.

Posted by big_jon

Marcus fenux.
Posted by Zabant

Color me impressed kessler, didn't expect a yun'gin like you to be so well versed in MK mythology

Posted by Sacerdos87

DLC being announced prior is pretty lame and shows they have very little confidence in the title at launch. It's like all those mmos that offer lifetime subs also prior to launch, just a desperate grab at money.

Posted by Guyzea

Just release the game first.

I also liked Frost. Kenshi as well, however I would prefer new characters. New characters could be made without the need to fit in the restrictions of older hardware limitations. Concessions like  pallet swaps and other design decisions had to be made. So yeah, new ones, Kenshi and Frost.

I want ryu!! what? it could happen.

Posted by Timsobuff

I have always really liked Rain and Kenshi. Kenshi sort of owns since he doesn't see with his eyes, but with his heart. His telekinetic heart.

Posted by Napalm

Am I the only one who prefers Smoke and not Smoke The Robot?

Posted by Praxis

Yeah, even given the MK team's recent track record with new characters, I would rather see a new one than any of these.

Posted by BillWhiskey601

I might be late, but is Matt a fulltime GB employee now?  I know his internship ended a couple of months ago

Posted by mrburger

I always thought Havik's moveset--breaking all his own bones--was pretty cool.  Also I always liked Reiko and thought he fit pretty nicely into the roster.  I'd rather see either of these guys than Shinnok or Tanya.

Posted by Aleryn

Hmm... Smoke prolly, nostalgia is powerful.
