Everybody Hates EA, Apparently

The game publisher overwhelmingly takes the trophy for "Worst Company in America," according to voters on The Consumerist's poll.

We've purposely avoided covering The Consumerist's poll for the 2012 user-voted Worst Company in America. We did this despite the fact that both video game publisher EA, and video games retailer GameStop were, at one point, both competing for this year's prize. We even ignored this poll as EA went deeper and deeper into the tournament, going up against the likes of Bank of America, AT&T, and Best Buy. We did this because there was no way EA could possibly be considered a more horrific company than any of those great institutions of corporate shittiness, right? Right...?

Heh. Poo.
Heh. Poo.

Imagine my slack-jawed expression upon learning this morning that, yes, EA did manage to beat all of the above companies and take home the "golden poo" award for the very worst company in America in 2012.

The user voting came down to EA going directly against Bank of America, the financial institution known for raising interest rates on credit card holders with no marks against their credit, misleading mortgage holders who sought to modify their loans, and randomly experimenting with jacking up debit card and checking account fees just for shits and giggles. In the end, EA took 64.03% of the vote, essentially destroying Bank of America 2-to-1 in voting.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that many of EA's business practices are fairly anti-consumer and occasionally even straight-up deplorable, but looking down the list of offenses the Consumerist post lists as justification for why it totally makes sense that EA had won--shipping games that required major patching later on, nickel-and-diming players with held back content as DLC, and acquiring independent developers and their innovative products in lieu of innovating with their own products--these could be lobbed at practically any major publisher in the video game industry. In a competition for worst video game publisher in America, I'm not even sure EA would win outright. They'd probably be a contender, but it hardly seems so cut-and-dried.

Most likely, many of the votes for EA came from those particularly incensed by recent issues like Mass Effect 3's ending, the general lousiness of EA's Origin service, and probably some combination of the things listed previously. Considering that EA has been at the forefront of a particularly nasty bit of Internet vitriol regarding Mass Effect 3 in the last month or so, it's not so surprising that voters came out in droves to express their displeasure via this outlet. Unfortunately, in doing so, they managed to put EA up on a pedestal over a company that has literally illegally foreclosed on people's homes. Repeatedly. So, hey, great job Internet.

EA, for its part, is taking the award in stride, telling Kotaku in a brief statement, "We're sure that British Petroleum, AIG, Philip Morris, and Halliburton are all relieved they weren't nominated this year. We're going to continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide."

Snap.

I don't know what would be better.

That people defending EA are employees. Or that the people defending EA are buttmad fanboys

I can't decide

The poll was for the WORST company in America, but I would assume after ME3 it quickly became the MOST HATED company in America, and guys on the net basically bombed the votes with EA. This actually shows the ire of people on the internet when they feel wronged I guess.

However, I'd still say BoA is one of the WORST companies in America, with its general incompetance and actual ability to crush the lively hood of may folk with their utter stupidity. Yes EA and many big publishers are very bad for the industry, but they do not affect peoples lives in the same way that BoA does.

Why can´t we just all agree that a whole lot of big corporations suck major balls? As soon as people get greedy, shit gets bad. Oh, of course I didn´t want to imply anything about our new corporate overlords over at CBS. They certainly have their hands clean and in fact, I bet they don´t even like money all that much.

So, I guess EA is the bad guy again.

This whole thing is so childish. We got consumers non stop yelling at EA and finding ways to try to tell EA "Hey, we don't like what you're doing?" and we got EA slinging back "Hey, we don't care what you guys think. We makin the money so go fuck yourselves".

Whatever, I'm going to continue to stay out of that stupid conversation but it's really dumb if this argument is undermining more important corporate issues that go beyond our hobby.

I'm not surprised. Not everyone voting would use that bank or know of it's terrible actions, but a gaming focused website would know about the evil shit EA does to all their games. So of course it's going to get more votes.

@Sooty: I agree. Their customer service is pretty terrible, but I don't think they are the worst company in America. Maybe the worst video game company, but even then, you have companies like Capcom with the whole "DLC on disc," companies that pump any piece of crap into a game (looking at you Ubisoft and your BILLION game show games), or Activision for their 5 Guitar Hero games a year, 3 Call of Duty games a year, and much more (don't troll, I love CoD and GH but a lot of people think they just crank stuff out). EA is the most prominent on the Online pass thing, but even then, a lot of companies are going to this mold. Oh well, leave it to the internet, the ones that fought and fought and broke Bioware into doing something about, what I think, was a fine ending to ME3 (don't troll this either, to each their own).

It's a fucking internet poll. This has just as much weight as GameFAQs polls. I GUESS LINK REALLY IS THE GREATEST HERO OF ALL TIME IT SAY SO RIGHT HERE ON THIS INTERNET POLL.

The point here is that enough people hate EA that they managed to beat an actually malicious company in an internet poll. It doesn't mean that EA is worse than Bank of America. It means that people passionately hate EA. That's all.

But you know, thanks for pandering, Alex. I appreciate the condescending statements about how uninformed the community is about real world issues and how trivial our medium is. If there's one thing that I think we can all agree on, it's that the people that visit this website think that video games are stupid and just a time sink and not a real entertainment medium like film or print and don't deserve to be defended. Real top notch journalism, buddy. I'm really sorry that we care about the state of the evolving industry. We'll all stop speaking up and encouraging positive change and just sit here and take it.

Bank of America really needed this win to knock it down a peg, right? It's not like they're actually getting real heat from real sources, such as, like, the American government. Maybe all those people would have gotten their houses back if they had only secured this win.

Man I love this website. What the hell is happening.

So I guess a company that misleads it's mortgage owners and back stabs it's clients is less corrupt than a company that gets the ending wrong on a video game trilogy. Glad to see people have their priorities straight...

but I also take into account that this is a random internet poll (not accredited for anything), and alot of young people may have voted. EA may have more impact on their life than some of the other companies.

Yeah I have to agree with this article. As much as I hate EA and the trends that they set for the gaming industry. It boggles my mind that they won over Bank of America and others. I am fairly certain EA hasn't literally ruined anybody's life. Where as you can't say the same for BofA.

EA is annoying, but at the end of the day their shittiness doesn't really mean much in the real world.  They aren't polluting water sources with oil spills.  They aren't mercenaries profiteering from a war economy.  They aren't screwing debit card users with fees an making up arrogant excuses.  They don't make hundreds of millions of dollars selling people a product that is likely to eventually kill them.

They make video games that sometimes annoy video gamers.  Oh no.  The monsters.

EA aren't the worst company, but I'm not surprised they can win a few internet polls about terrible companies from a consumer experience / being taken for a ride perspective.

They were the guys who started out with a vision (see first ever EA advert with mission statement) and became the people who used money to acquire IP and destroy studios (studios with vision and talent but had fallen on hard times), went through a short period of trying to reform (and getting good marks for it but ending up failing to meet financial expectations from those years), and are now back to being 'those guys who will do anything for an extra dollar' with very public talk about DLC and how it enables better return on investment (ie extracting more money for any given unit of work put into a product) while avoiding depreciation.

I have never ever understood the hate towards EA, they have consistantly made decent games in the last 15 years or so, some of my all time favourite games have been from them. Even some of their annual games come out really well (Fifa 12 was especially great, a significant improvement over 11 anyway and NFS Hot Pursuit is the best NFS game ever, fact) and they have got great developers with Criterion and Bioware. Burnout 3 was one of my all time favourite games of the last generation and i reckon that was probably down to EA giving Criterion the money to do something crazy and great with their series, to which at the point of purchase they weren't 'great' but could be great. Same can be said with Mass Effect, as that first game was poor but the sequel (now with EA) was absolutely amazing.

SSX is an EA game that came out recently and is absolutely fantastic, i'm completely hooked on it!

If anybody deserves the award for fucking customers over look at Activision and the raping and pillaging of the CoD franchise .. and the inevitable CoD: Black Ops 2 ... no need at all.

Well the Bank of America was one of the bigger factors of the worldwide crisis, so everyone should consider it ass, no matter where you live.

But who cares about that in this regard. Everyone knows it's awful, if the Bank of America would've won this nobody would've cared.

This however giving a bit more attention on EA is wonderful, because that's actually something that'll spread through the internet (as we can see).

As to why EA is the by far worst publisher, worse than Activision, Captcom, Ubisoft, Square Enix and so on.

  1. They ruined the most developers
  2. They ruined the most franchises
  3. They are among the top DLC supporters
  4. They have terrible working conditions

Apart from that of course smaller stuff like:

Awful customer service and awful press (e.g. like the Dead Space 2 advertisement and this childish "We'll beat CoD blalba which we don't believe but shit like this boosts sells no matter what" and so on).

But in the end, the first 2 points are the most important ones. They keep ruining developers and franchises. That kinda already includes everything else. I as a longtime RTS fan can only shake my head when I see what's become of e.g. Age of Empires and Command & Conquer). EA has a long list of shit they ruined, if someone finds a bigger for Activision and co., go ahead.

Wow, this is kinda high up there on dumbest shit on the internet. Worse than Halliburton or BP who together wrecked the Gulf's ecosystem? Worse than Blackwater or BofA or Goldman Sacchs? Fuck I'd say the SEC is worse than EA if for nothing but their random flailings and pretension to giving a shit about their job.

The only thing that makes this less disgusting is that it's an internet poll, which have about as much use as a change.org petition.

So they're not denying that they're the worst company? Only stating they're a bad company that serves a lot of people? I mean... Bank of America still serves a lot of people... Haliburton still serves a lot of people... AT&T still serves a lot of people...

Oh, and yeah, I agree that those three companies in particular are far worse than EA. I guess that fact combined with my earlier point means there are a lot of consumers who need to wake up and realize that, yeah, you often have a choice of who you buy from. Maybe exercise that?

With a burn that sick, it's clear that at least a few people over there have souls. EA may pull the occasional shitty stunt, but its generic corporatism doesn't deserve to "win" this contest in the face of blatant evil.

I couldn't care less about that poll, and EA winning this means more folks get aware of that crap company. Meanwhile if the Bank of America won, who'd give a shit. Everyone knows they suck already.

EA needs to die, won't happen anytime soon but considering how much effort they're putting into screwing over their customers, eventually none is left. EA absolutely dwarfs every other company/publisher in regards to what's bad.

EA hasn't obliterated the livelihood of tens of thousands of people.
