First Impressions: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

SSF2THDR is now available... so I played a bunch of it. Here's what I think so far.

"Bonjour, je m'appelle Guile."
In case you hadn't heard, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has finally been released, with the PS3 version hitting yesterday and the 360 release out early this morning. We'll have a full review of the game in the near future, but I felt you might be interested in a few quick bits of info about the game based on my experiences.

The online totally works. Really, that might be the only piece of info you need to see. While it'll act a little funky if you're playing internationally or against people with awful connections, it feels fine to me. I'd guess that if you were counting frames, though, you'd probably notice some differences.

Maybe it's just a time of day thing, but the people I was playing last night on the PS3 version were wiping me out. Totally better than me. Now that I'm playing the 360 version, though, I'm running through most players without too much trouble. I think I've lost one match so far, maybe two. Also, I managed to get three perfect rounds in a row against one guy. Another guy's whole strategy was to pick Fei Long and just hit roundhouse over and over again. Duhhhhh.

I ran into a bug on the 360 version where the music just stopped playing during fights. Still works at the menu, but I guess I'll need to quit and restart it to get the music back.

The game lets you revert to original character graphics, original music, and original gameplay, if you want. There's also a pretty heavy menu of switches that let you turn on specific elements of the remixed gameplay, like if you'll be able to "store Honda's command throw" or not.

I thought the new artwork would bother me way more than it does. The "new art, old frames" look still seems a bit choppy, but that's by design, and it's not a big deal. Speaking of which, most of the new art is A-OK. I think the only thing I don't like is Blanka's face. Maybe that's the point.

Oh, and they totally got rid of the stupid-ass announcer that popped up in Super, and changed some of the voices, too. Guile doesn't sound totally horrible when shouting "sonic boom." They just reverted it back to the pre-Super voice. This, alone, makes the entire "remix" worthwhile.

Pretty smart changes, all told. At least that's how they feel so far. More soon.

Hulk has noticed that when playing as Sagat there are entire rounds where he will not say "Tiger." at all when using various attacks.  Then a round or two later he will begin saying it again.  Also having the same music problems as Jeff, only it goes in and out like the Sagat stuff.

Just watched the preview of the game on the XBLM and it looks awesome. It also has "You're the Best Around" from the Karate Kid as the videos music, so that makes it awesome already. And the facts you've pointed out may make it worthwhile to go and get now.

The demo is only for two players because all Capcom essentially did was make the beta version of the game public while disabling the online portion.  Yeah, it's lazy, but, they've spent a year and a half working on the actual game.  After going way over their the and budget allotment, I'm guessing Capcom just mailed it in on the demo at the last moment.  I would say players really need to see the difficulty of the arcade mode before jumping into the game as Turbo has never been a very beginner-friendly game.

As for audio, I have also noticed a few slips, but I mostly noticed a very brief period of time where the characters didn't have speech during victory poses (Xbox 360 version).

Capcom did an awesome job.  I may have disputed the price but for such a beautifully constructed and highly replayable update to this arcade masterpiece it's worth my $15. It seems there are some small issues with the audio but it's nothing game breaking. The updated soundtrack by Over Clocked Remix (Fei Long's stage rocks) is cool but I prefer the original music but it's sweet that I have the option to switch between the two. The remixed moves list is also a welcome addition. And Shin Akuma still makes you want to throw your controller at the screen as always.

I played online last night with 2 friends and it was a blast - we absolutely loved it! I'm in Chiacgo and both of them were in Portland, Oregon and we had ZERO instances of lag. One of my friends plays in local tournaments and is a very skilled player, and he made no mention of lag or lost frames.

BTW: All of us have the Hori stick. So gameplay was great.

On a related note, I'm saddened by how few players seemed to be playing. I couldn't get a Quick Match nor would anyone join when I tried to start my own match. Other than my 2 friends I ended up playing with, there were no other friends - out of 50 - that purchased SFHD. WTF? Why is seemingly no one playing this?

Well I will say that Europe don't even have it yet but... that's weird. I figured tons of people would have picked this up!

I downloaded the xbox version last night and ive been playing it pretty much every spare second i have!  This is definetly the game i was hoping for and despite the xbox d pad being a little stiffer than the ps3's i found it very easy to pull of the moves i was trying to do.

Go into the leaderboards and you'll find your actual win/loss record.  I'm guessing it was programed in the game, but the developers perhaps thought it best not to see the win/loss stats on the person you're about to play.  It would really suck for good players never to be able to find someone to play with because they'd see their record and run, so I agree it shouldn't be known before a match.

Ah, that makes sense. I was also wondering why I was stuck at 0-0.
The game is fantastic, but I seriously need to get a Hori stick. I'm not that put off though since I've been playinga  shitload of 2d fighters on my Dreamcast since I dug it out and brought it home last time I visited my parents.

I wish my online experience with this game was in-line with (seemingly) everybody else's. half the time I can't even get a match (in any mode, even if I create my own and let it sit there for a good half-hour), and when I do it's fucking magical teleporting character lag-fest.

and no there's nothing wrong with my NAT thankyou very much.

Good job, Capcom."
Yeah, I agree, the exclusion of a single player trial is out and out lame.

The voices in Super totally sucked balls, good thing that they fixed that. If they didn't I would not have even considered buying it.

After playing this game I wonder why there is a need for SFIV. I feel like SSFIITHDR (lol...) is all I'd want SFIV to be, minus some new characters. $60 for new characters, medicore storylines, and anime clips? I dunno.

Same thing happens to me, Im on PSN. The game lags just enough to fuck up my timing. Half the time I try to join games it says lost network connection. I wish the d-pad on the 360 didnt suck balls or I would have bought this on XBL.

I don't understand how people can take a game so seriously. Why would a slightly different voice make a game better? I play games all the time, granted not as much as I did when I was younger, but there is no way I could play a street fighter game and notice a slight difference in the sound. . . I'm not saying it's sad, just very weird.

I played the ps3 version today and i totally love it. I own too many versions of SFII, but i'm confident in telling you this absolutely kicks every versions butt! Maybe, just maybe, not the original SNES version, but the PS3 controller is better imho. I recommend this to everyone (not just the SFII addicts like me).

Oh, btw the online is okay. Some lag now and then, but totally playable!

I did enjoy this game :) Need some practice though and to play with the D-pad is like driving a car with your balls... The analog is alright though.
