Forza Motorsport 4 Has a DLC Season Pass, If You're Into That Kind of Thing

$30 up front nets you the full suite of additional cars for 30% less than you'd pay individually.

The season pass is officially the hot new DLC trend in gaming, and for once, it's not an abhorrently disgusting trend. I mean not, of course, the whole "you need a code to play online at all" version of the season pass--that still pretty well sucks--but rather the idea of offering DLC discounts to the most dedicated of players of big new games. Say what you will about downloadable content pricing, the idea of offering an appreciable discount to players who have every intention of purchasing all of a game's downloadable supplements is hardly something to bunch one's panties over. Unless you just really like bunching up your panties over things. I suppose I can't fault you for that. Whatever turns you on, you know? I don't judge.

You are going to download muscle cars you didn't even know you could! BIG muscle cars! HARD...muscle cars!
You are going to download muscle cars you didn't even know you could! BIG muscle cars! HARD...muscle cars!

If you are the panty-bunching type, prepare to get thoroughly bunched up over today's news that Microsoft and developer Turn 10 will be offering up a $30 season pass for Forza Motorsport 4. The pass covers all six of the DLC expansions Turn 10 plans to release between the game's October launch and April of next year. Any interested motorhead who purchases the pack will also gain access to a free bonus pack of American muscle cars, which includes the following musclebound vehicular behemoths.

  • 1965 Pontiac GTO
  • 1968 Pontiac Firebird
  • 1970 Buick GSX
  • 1970 Dodge Cornet Super Bee
  • 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS
  • 1969 Shelby GT500 428CJ
  • 1971 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi
  • 1967 Dodge Cornet W023
  • 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock
  • 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt

Between the six packs in question (and presumably not counting the bonus pack), the DLC will include a total of 60 new cars for the game, which with the discount applied, averages out to about 50 cents a car. Intriguingly, the press release only discusses cars as DLC, and makes no mention of potential track DLC. Perhaps that means Turn 10 isn't planning on adding any supplemental tracks, or it could just mean that any planned additional tracks simply aren't part of this deal. We'll just have to wait and see.

Regardless, as someone who spent a bunch of money on Forza 3 DLC, and most recently on the season pass-less DiRT 3, I see this as a welcome help to my wallet. I will download all of the cars. All of them.

@RE_Player92: That's...what this is. You pay the $30, and that covers you for the upcoming six DLC packs, and at a 30% discounted rate.

As far as DLC goes I can get behind things like this, I bought the Gears 3 pass as I know I'd be downloading all the DLC anyways so may as well save some cash. As for Forza Id buy the pass If i didn't suck so hard at driving games. I bought Forza 3 and enjoyed it but my driving skills...what a mess.

You guys who have played more Forza 2 and 3 then me can probably answer this better then I would.....but it seems like buying extra tracks hasn't really been a big deal. The game has almost every famous notable circuit and there really isn't much to be added.

I love the season pass for the cars. I usually ignore car packs because the purchase of one car I liked would mean having 4 unused cars. It might be nice to just get everything in a nice bundle and not have to worry about anything, while saving all that money.

My biggest problem, as always, is hard-drive space. I'm still on my original 20 GB from launch. This was the year that it finally caught up to me.

I spent some money on Forza 3 cars as well. This could be a good deal, I guess. Yet, if you're paying for a discount does the price just balance out in the end? I'd like to see "You will save this much." if you get the season pass and buy all the DLC. I want a solid number of what I'm going to save.

I don't want to pay $30 for the false sense that I'm saving money later on.

If you want every car that this game is going to get you are going to have to spend $110. $80 for the Limited Collector's Edition and $30 for all the DLC.

Here's hoping they don't pull a Forza 3 Ultimate Edition. That will force you to buy the game again at a reduced price for 3 cars they refuse to sell online.

The season pass I'm fine. The VIP access that you either have to buy to access VIP cars and the fact that the CE has its own exclusive cars? Miffed about that even though I would have bought the CE anyway. Sucks for everyone who wasn't, or can't, though.

NOTE: The CE comes with VIP access.

I've spent a lot more money on DLC for games because of Season Passes, so it has seemed like a pretty successful trick but my one hang-up about it...does even the hardcore crowd of a certain game stick around to see/download the last bit piece of DLC? I stuck around for LA Noire's because of achievements tied to it, but haven't even downloaded MK's last two characters. Though at 50 cents a car, this is in-game Hot Wheels I can get behind for Forza 4.

I've only ever bought DLC for Mass Effect and Borderlands, so lets hope they don't do any of this bullshit with those games. Although now that I've said it, I bet it's unavoidable.

You've giving them a loan on future content which may be total horseshit. Yeah, I don't like it. It's the same reason that you should never, ever preorder anything from Gamestop.

@LordCmdrStryker: You're not obligated to buy anything. If you know that you're going to end up buying all of the DLC content, because, I don't know, you're a car enthusiast? This is kind of fantastic.

I don't understand why this is at all a bad thing. You can still buy everything individually. This is just another option for people. Options are good; especially if you're saving money.

So, if you could kindly find something else to feel indignant about that would be super.

@Alex: The subtitle needs changing. It makes it sound like you're saying that if you pay $30 you get a 30% discount off the DLC; as opposed to the real meaning, $30 nets you the dlc at a discounted rate.

It seems like I'm not the only one who has misunderstood either.

seeing that forza 3 had some great car packs this is actually kinda tempting... at the same time i just don't know how long ill play forza. Guess the nice thing i can wait a couple months, see if i'm still playing, look at the cars so far then get the season pass (least i hope that's still available.) As for the extra muscle car pack, I couldn't care less. Its free though so whatever.

Also id love to see these Season Passes to start being put in the CE versions but i'm sure that just means less money for them unless they all end up being $99 or something.

@LordCmdrStryker:

in cases of things like Mass Effect, I'm gonna play it whether the content is shit or not. As for the whole preorder thing, I don't have an issue buying a game from amazon early and getting it the day reviews are out. Is it a gamble some times? Sure, but very rarely am I let down.

Never been close to running out of new cars to try in previous Forza games, I don't see why Forza 4 + a small percentage increase of total cars to drive should make this a $90 purchase rather than a $60 one. But then I'm still not quite over the expansion pack days where you paid $60 on release and then $40 12-18 months later and got the game when it came out and another game (slightly smaller scope, maybe a few tweaks to gameplay but often very close to the original) in the 12-18 months when they asked for the second payment. That seemed to be a good way of giving gamers who enjoyed the original more of what they wanted without having to spend time prototyping and exploring possibly dead end avenues of innovation. They seem to call them sequels now and want the expansion money for a (percentage of original game content wise) very small extension to the original game.

@Alex: Right. I saw it, I'm just wondering what each pack costs, I guess. Are they 10 bucks each? 6 packs = $60? You save 18 dollars? Do I pay 30 to save 18? Or am I just really bad at math? I did fail that subject.

As someone who bought all of the Forza 2 and 3 DLC...yeah, this will be nice. I will gladly put forth money I already know I'm going to spend.

I guess the confusion over whether this is a part of the LCE is because those ten "bonus" cars look an awful lot like the ten American muscle cars already promised as part of the package. I'm going to assume we're getting the bonus without the season pass, but any other outcome would be surprisingly nice.

Holding off on track DLC for at least half a year would be nice, too. It's quite a downer when we're unable to use a track during Race Night because it hasn't been purchased by some of the players.

I hardly ever buy DLC. So not really for me to say, but I just wish more people wanted it to work like Valve does.

This model is all well and good with certain hits, but what happens when the Homefronts start making this commitment to future content... It's gambling, like lifetime subs on new MMO's.  And for all this talk of wanting to see what you are buying with game content, how is this any better?

In the far off future of the year 2014, Bro Wars 2 is released:

a: You can spend $70 to get the Access package which lets you play the game as the developers "originally intended it", access to both SP and MP is limited.

OR

b: You can spend $40 on the Micro-Transaction package which lets you play the bare-bones single player run through. Individual extra unlocks can be bought to upgrade.

OR

b: You can spend $140 on the Total Package which lets you play all the content that has been created for the game.

What I don't like about this is that they already have this DLC planned out, well okay they have a plan that is lovely. But we still don't know that much about the game, and we are already getting details on the Seasonal Pass for DLC?

I prefer the route Polyphony Digital is taking. Unlike Need For Speed Shift, Dirt or Forza. They are still deciding what direction their DLC should take with Gran Turismo. While doing that they update the game, change up seasonal events, and what not. But also with this Forza 4 DLC, do these car packs even come with the AutoVista models? Obviously they can't come with the Clarkson commentary. Speaking of that not every car even has AutoVista, which is their most shown off feature still.

We know all about the Limited Edition, Pre-Orders, and now seasonal passes. But can someone point to absolute knowledge on what tracks are in the game? How about that 16 player multiplayer performance? etc. They know they already have me as a day one purchase guy. But as Marcus Fenix would say "AWWW C'MOON!".
