Here's What Nintendo Just Announced

Not quite megaton, but some interesting stuff out of Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo just concluded its latest Nintendo Direct presentation, and it was full of little news bits.

No Caption Provided

If you're looking for news on a new Zelda, Mario, or Metroid, though, that didn't happen. All of those things are probably happening, but Nintendo's not willing to disclose those games yet.

Here's what the company did talk about, though.

  • Little Mac joining Super Smash Bros. and it launches in 2014.
  • Mario Golf on 3DS has a single-player RPG mode called Castle Club. Game arrives May 2.
  • Kirby: Triple Deluxe will also launch on May 2, with in-game items coming via Street Pass.
  • Yoshi's New Island arrives on March 14.
  • Yet another Ace Attorney game is in development.
  • The new first-person Steel Diver game will have free and "premium" versions. The free version has a few single-player missions and the entire multiplayer mode. It's also being released today.
  • Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is a new downloadable game being developed with the theme "good feelings." (Yes, really!) It includes a bunch of baseball-related mini-games. One mini-game is free, but the others must be purchased. You can, however, "haggle" with Rusty and get the prices down "significantly." The game will be released in April.
  • Pokemon Battle Trozei is a downloadable action puzzle game coming on March 20. It's actually a sequel to an existing game.
  • Inazuma Eleven is making its debut in North America on the eShop today.
  • NES Remix 2 launches on April 25 with mini-games pulled from Metroid, Kid Icarus, and others.
  • GBA comes to Virtual Console in the spring, starting with Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi, Mario Advance 3, and others down the line. Mario Advance 2, Wario Ware, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, F-Zero and others are headed to Japan.
  • New footage from X was shown, but the only release date indication is "2014" in Japan.
  • There was new footage from Bayonetta 2, as well, and it's coming "later" this year.

I'm predominantly a PC gamer, but I do have a Wii U sitting and collecting dust. I still can't make myself buy the new DK, and I want to play it. I assume the Wii U will just be for my wife and I to play Mario Kart.

Can we get GBA games on the 3DS already? This is crazy just putting them on the Wii U, cause you know, so many people have purchased the Wii U. And I still think they can get SNES games on the 3DS but don't want to for some unknown reason.

Did they say they're only putting out GBA games on Wii U? That would be so....Nintendo. I was going to say stupid, but those two words go together pretty well sometimes.

No but there is no reason to release the GBA games on both systems at the same time, maybe purchase one and get the other? Some company does that and they are doing ok currently in the video game industry.

I'm happy Little Mac is in Smash! Wished he was playable in Brawl but now he's shown up! And Bayonetta 2 looks really exciting to play. I am a little confused why we did not hear anything about games like Hyrule Warriors, Yoshi's Epic Yarn and Sonic Boom.

I was about to post a comment, and then I read this. I couldn't agree more with this. I don't see how Nintendo fans don't get frustrated by the way Nintendo operates. They go around teasing what's coming in the future while ignoring the wants and needs of their more loyal fans.

...

But that's when I realized that Nintendo doesn't care about us as much as we'd like to think ("us" being the "hardcore" audience). Instead, they seem to market to little kids and a casual audience, none of whom are likely to have played OoT or Super Mario 64, and thus are unable to realize that the games coming out now are purely iterating on those experiences.

Their sales numbers hopefully indicate to them, among other things, that they need to try harder to appeal to the hardcore market and not just children and their already super-loyal fanbase. Unfortunately, this news is certainly no bombshell and it doesn't appear as of now that they are truly intent on changing their business practices like they claim.

Yeah.

I bleed Nintendo red, but I'm in no hurry for a Wii U (or any current-gen system in fact.) Ninty drank deep of the "mainstream" with the Wii. And they are now parched without it, because the mainstream and the Wii Bowlers don't need them. They know their majority audience is, and has long been, parents buying games for kids. Very little effort goes into appealing to the adults like myself who Grew Up Nintendo. I simply happen to really like what they put out, regardless of how long I have to wait.

Very little of what I like, is to do with their business strategies. Earthbound should be freaking everywhere, not just on Wii U. That is a ploy. Never translating Mother 3 is a mistake. The fact that Operation Rainfall had to happen is a mistake. Being terrified of easy online play is a mistake. Having a sequel to Link to the Past in my hands doesn't excuse any of it, because my next purchase is going to be a Vita 2.0.

@rulerofeden: We're they supposed to just cancel every game they were making? Yoshi's Island has been confirmed for forever. I really don't understand how people think that companies will just change overnight starting with canceling all game that are almost complete to "move in a new direction". Also Yoshi's New Island looks pretty damn good.

I thought Nintendo was moving in a new direction. Almost all of these announcements just indicate more stupid bullshit to me.

Their earnings call JUST happened barely a month ago. You can't move a multi-billion dollar company in a new direction in a month

Gamers are the most impatient of all fanbases sadly

Except you can see that Nintendo has been going in the wrong direction -- or more accurately, nowhere -- since the Wii U launched.

Of all console loyalties, Nintendo fans are the most patient and forgiving. The hew and cry when other companies double-dip on titles is fairly consistent, but few people make much of a fuss about having to buy a new copy of Super Mario Bros. on every Nintendo device. Nintendo has the most insidiously abusive relationship with its fans; while MS and Sony have made a circus about who is listening harder to gamers, Nintendo asks us to understand, please, for a year, and in that time takes little more than a timid step forward while seeming to ignore everything about the entertainment world as it is now, and what gamers want.

So, no, I don't think it's unreasonable for Nintendo fans to be impatient at this point. I do think it's crazy to keep begging sympathy and patience for a multi-billion dollar company that continues to make decisions like its 2004.

But what gamers are we talking about here? You mean the gamers that want a hardcore online experience? Or do you mean the stuff that makes the most money like a F2P microtransaction heavy game? Maybe the gamers that get addicted to an overly simple, shitty game like Flappy Bird? Maybe the gamers that play every MMO they can because they get a ton of game content for just $15 a month? Maybe even the same gamers that complain that a new zelda or mario kart game comes out once every generation, but go on to buy COD every god damn year since 2005?

You can claim to know what gamers want, but reality is no one really does. It's an evolving business that's full of fads. Fads that get ridden into the ground hard as fuck and dies a slow and painful death while we all feed into with our wallets.

Look at the Xbox One. Microsoft tried their hardest to innovate and move the industry forward to an all digital future by basically making disc based games just physical installers that couldn't be resold to anyone else. But no...everyone flipped the fuck out and what'd they do? They went back to exactly what the 360 did and it's not even as great as the 360 was. It's a system that's going to be patched next month because how the system works isn't like the 360.

Yes, Microsoft moved the industry forward with Xbox Live and it's a much better place because of it. But since then, what have they done to move the business forward? Kinect? Gamers fuckin hate it. Smart glass? What's the point? Redesigning their dashboard 6-7 times? The Blades were better the first time

But I guess I look at things differently because I own ALL of the consoles. I pledge to no one and defend everyone because I love this business. And yes, you are right, most of the time Nintendo fucking sucks. Like calling it the Wii U for example, worst fucking name ever and confuses the shit out of all the casuals. But at the same time while the games may be the same thing or the same series again, no one makes games quite like they do. PS4 and Xbox One games are great, but they have a similar feel. Nintendo games are always great pallet cleansers after playing 10 FPS games in a row.

Now If I owned ONLY Nintendo systems every generation then yes, this would be a completely different story and my tone would be more of hate towards them. Thankfully I have a good enough paying job to support the hobby that I love.

Nintendo still has a lot of work to do to catch up to the other two. But they aren't afraid to be different in a fad heavy business and that's why I continue to respect them. They turned the early shit show launch for the 3DS around and I still believe they can turn the Wii U around

I was about to post a comment, and then I read this. I couldn't agree more with this. I don't see how Nintendo fans don't get frustrated by the way Nintendo operates. They go around teasing what's coming in the future while ignoring the wants and needs of their more loyal fans. I owned a Nintendo 64, Gamecube, and Wii (which I sold after a year). I was really mad at the kinds of casual games Nintendo was releasing on the Wii as well as all the "double-dipping".

Super Mario 3D World is their first Mario game; Zelda HD will be their first 3D Zelda experience; all of Nintendo's franchises, which we could argue are stale, are being experienced for the first time by this audience. The best part is, Nintendo's franchises are associated with being "kiddy" and are bright, colorful, and cartoony, so parents are likely to see Nintendo products and just buy them for their young children on instinct. Nintendo doesn't seem to be interested in keeping this audience loyal; rather, once they leave because they want to play more "mature" games with an actually decent matchmaking system or because they don't want to play videogames anymore, new kids age into Nintendo's target audience and the cycle continues.

I've always seen Nintendo Direct as being a little misguided. If Nintendo wanted to advertise their upcoming games, they picked a bad way to do it, because the only people paying attention are their hardcore fans; it's an echo chamber. If their hardcore fans wanted to know the news, chances are they already read gaming news sites like IGN, GameSpot, etc. Instead, this process gives the illusion that Nintendo is communicating directly with its fans and listening to their feedback when they're really just doing what they think is best with little to no regard for consumer feedback.

Why doesnt nintendo just put all of its handheld games on the e shop? It staggers me that they put gba games and ds games on the wii u and not on the 3ds. There are literally dozens of games I would potentially buy if they did this.

First the bunny that sold you minigames, and now concept of haggling down the price of dlc? There is clearly a genius toiling away in the bowels of ninty as we speak.

Still haven't addressed the shitty VC on the 3ds.

Handheld games on a home console.. in all their blown up pixelated glory. Ugh!

Why not add a couple of games to the WiiU?! Like, right now? I wonder if that thing will be cheaper next year, because after TWO full years there have to be more than 2 or 3 standout games. Right?

Bayonetta 2 is going to be the best game of the next generation, until Bayonetta 3 or Wonderful 101-2 or something, and it's a shame that not many people are gonna play and appreciate it just because it's on the Wii U.

I'm so god damn excited for Bayonetta 2 even though I might not ever own the system...

Boy oh boy, Iwata's inflections sure are bizarre. Shouldn't they put Reggie in charge of these or something?

Eh, whatever. I'm excited to see that Smash Bros. is for sure (?) coming out this year. And Mario Kart 8 sure looks pretty. That weird Rusty Baseball whatever looked really creepy though.

The way Reggie speaks is the most bizarre

I honestly think nintendo direct is one huge missed opportunity. I miss Nintendo from back when it was gloriously weird. Remember that super crazy promotion video for Diddy Kong Racing? I remember getting a copy of it on VHS in the mail. I used to watch it over and over, getting more excited about the game every time I saw it. I would love for Nintendo to get silly weird like that again. Nintendo direct could be this amazing thing that everyone looked forward to regardless of whether or not they wanted to see the announcements. It could be a great way to draw more attention to what they've got coming up.

Loading Video...

Fuck! How awesome would it be if Nintendo still promoted games like this?! Yea, it's cheesy as hell, but it's miles better than the sterile, lifeless Nintendo Direct. It doesn't have to be high budget, I just want Nintendo to be lighthearted and silly again.

I'm excited for new Kirby! :D And whenever Bayonetta 2 or X comes out, that'll be what pushes me over the edge to buy a Wii U. I'm very much looking forward to both of those.

Patrick, it ain't just a new Ace Attorney: it's a new Ace Attorney directed by SHU MOTHER EFFIN' TAKUMI. He hasn't directed an AA title since the third game, for context. AA5 was amazing without his help, so goodness knows how brilliant this new one will be.

That's awesome to hear. I thought Dual Destinies was probably my favorite AA since the original, and I didn't realize Takumi wasn't at the helm. Also, after reading today about how the third Zero Escape game probably won't get made (via https://twitter.com/Uchikoshi_Eng , and it depresses me to no end), I'll take my visual novels however I can get them!

WTH Inazuma Eleven just appearing out of nowhere? Heard that was a pretty decent Level-5 rpg...

Yeah, some outlet reported a while back that Inazuma Eleven had been added to the Nintendo release calendar a while back and subsequently removed. I was actually pretty excited to check that out, and now here it is! I'm probably gonna go download that now...

Genuinely surprised they're bringing out the F2P baseball game overseas. I've heard a lot of good things about it from Japanese players about how good it actually is about not being in your face for money, though, so I'm super curious to see how people elsewhere take to it. Definitely been curious about the haggling bit for a while myself.
