Jack Tretton No Longer With Sony

The lovable executive has decided to part ways with PlayStation.

No Caption Provided

It's a time of change at Sony, apparently. The company has just announced Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton will be leaving Sony behind.

"This is a result of a mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA not to renew their contractual relationship," the company said in a press release.

Tretton's successor will be Shawn Layden, who is currently exec. VP and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International. He starts the job on April 1.

@giantsuck: He's like the prototypical charming businessman, the antithesis of the prototypical douchebag out-of-touch businessman that is Bobby Kotick. I'm know imagining Tretton as the Illusive Man, smoking his fake cigarette and it totally works!

Isn't sony going through major changes anyway? I dont' keep up on these things, but i do remember the majority share holder or something basically deciding to split the company in two, between the games, electronics and movie devisions. Probably had a lot to do with it if he didn't feel that was the direction it should go in.

Sony as a company is going through big structural changes, but the games division is one of the few parts of Sony that's actually doing well (the company as a whole has been losing to the South Koreans on TVS, phones etc.). So there's no reason why Sony would force any changes in one of the few divisions that actually works, and I doubt it has anything to do with that.

And he as CEO of SCEA would have no real input on the direction of the company, just on SCEA.

@retardedfishy: That game project went nowhere worth continuing in four years of development, Amy Henning wanted to try other things, Tretton felt that 19 years were enough and most importantly that he could retire from the position proud of what he had helped accomplish.

That's what's going on.

I don't even like Sony, but this guy had character.

Who ever takes his place... has big shoes to fill.

It's going to be an interesting E3... both Microsoft and Sony have lost two guys who had personality.

You can't buy personality.

I thought he wasn't charismatic at all. He had the personality of a shoe. Replaceable in every way.

In contrast, I don't like Reggie that much, but it is a guy with personality and charisma.

Just because one section of a business is doing well does not save it from change when the company as a whole is tanking. This makes sense, Sony seems to be taking a step back from the U.S in order to focus on the main company meaning Japan.

Last year they sold the NY HQ, last week they shut 61% of their U.S stores. From the phrasing decided not to renew their contract i'm guessing he was expecting some raise due to the success of the PS4 in the U.S but Sony not being able to afford it gave him stock options, even though no one wants to own Sony stock at this point. Either that or his previous contract was based mostly around stock options and he wanted that changed.

Maybe he will go to another game company like Don Mattrick, that guy went to Zynga and their stock is up 67% YTD, so he is doing something great over there.

You seemed like a cool guy and the fact that we are saying this

SHOULD BLOW EVERYONE'S FUCKING MINDS

Jack Tretton and Shuhei Yoshida are two people every executive should work to be like. Seeming like a human being is the most marketable thing you can do in this backwards ass world.

Do you follow the business world? If so you should know Tretton was extremely stale.

I don't get where people like you get this image of corporate business men being all terrible, but if you decided to watch some news and follow some of the CEO's of other companies you'd be surprised, how boring Tretton was. He is the stereotypical business man that most people, who think corporations are bad, picture.

ehhh not interested in arguing about CEOs what so fucking ever (yawn) but I find it very hard to believe you follow business closer than I do consider my professional employment and your Tretton opinions but either way what I follow most closely is games and in the world of games a CEO of any company half as large as Sony who comes off as even barely human is very much a needle in a hay stack. Disagreeing with that isn't opinion, it's delusion, so it should be no surprise that a human CEO is a fan favourite. This thread is ample proof of that and Tretton has enjoyed being liked for a long time, this year was just the zenith.

But ok, let's say your right:

Would love to see your list of videogame CEOs we should be celebrating instead.
