Jeff Gerstmann Heads to New York, Takes Questions

Watch the video of Jeff's trip to Brooklyn and the NYU Game Center, where questions were asked and answered.

Before PAX East consumed us all last weekend, I took a quick trip to Brooklyn to make an appearance at the NYU Game Center. They've got a very cool thing going out there, providing students with high-tech setups like 3D printers, motion capture gear, and so on. If there were more game-dedicated curriculums out there when I was getting out of high school, perhaps I would have found my way into one of them, rather than rushing straight into the job market. But, of course, there's no one way into the video game industry. There's no one way into the "covering the video game industry" industry, either. Anyway, enough preamble. Here are a couple of hours of video with me speaking with James Marion, who was kind enough to invite me out in the first place, and taking questions from the audience. I had a good time, and unlike the events that followed that weekend at PAX, no bottles were broken over any heads during the course of this discussion. Oh well, there's always next time...

For more on the NYU Game Center and its ongoing series of talks, check out this website on the internet.

(Also, if you're on mobile and the Vimeo embed doesn't show, perhaps you'll have better luck by going directly to the video.)

@jamessmarion: Just wanted to thank you for hosting this talk! I wasn't at the event, but having finally watched the archive, I appreciate that yourself and the attendees were largely big fans of Jeff and Giant Bomb's work, but everyone involved was able to have a cogent, interesting discussion about games without fanboying out. It was really refreshing in contrast to the really embarrassing Q&A sections after most Giant Bomb PAX panels.

I wonder if there are any places like this NYU Game Center out in Southern California. The events they mentioned in the beginning sound super interesting.

@supermacguyver: I think the difference is that the people in attendance were asking questions out of genuine interest and not to get a rise out of the community.

Really great watch. I love the Bombcast and the live shows but I also love seeing Jeff talk "out of character" as it were. Smart duder he is. I hope I get a chance to meet and chat with him some day. Thanks for posting it!

Just got to the bit about the Transistor footage and God damn, @jeff, I don't care if you have to get Patrick back in the hot dog suit workin' the late night streets of Shytown for tha scrilla, get Vinny and Drew all the time and support they need to make a mini-series out of that!

Woooh. Great talk. I sometimes do feel like I could quit my current studies and try and make an indie game but the iteration and slaving away on it is just not appealing. But more power to those that do make games. You men and women are most admired.

Fantastic video. It was so nice to see Jeff answering questions earnestly in a semi-formal environment. I love the way he generally composes himself, but sometimes his casually jaded demeanor can make it difficult to gleam genuine information and opinions from his responses. For people interested in video games and the industry, this might be the most informative videos I've ever seen. Well done!

This was a joy to watch! Jeff's responses were full of thought and insight, and the question askers were mercifully low on the cringe-quotient.

This has been a fantastic watch. I could listen to Jeff talk about games for ever, so knowledgble, thoughtful and with a great bullshit director. I really hope these hires come off and they can get someone new for him to spark off around the office.

I really like Jeff when he's given a platform to speak outside of the Giant Bomb offices. He steps down the "always on" element of his public persona that things like the podcast really accentuate and he comes out with some great levelheaded stuff.

Not to say the rest of the time he's just spouting bullshit, I just particularly like him in these circumstances.

Awesome talk. Jeff is so quick with a great answer and then some. And yes, the questions were very good. I almost feel like the convention questions need to be screened to weed out the dumb "how do I get your job" garbage.

I've been thinking for at least a couple of years how cool it would be for a documentary or book to be made detailing the history that the GB staff have had in the industry from their perspective and from people that have worked with them. Also this video was real awesome thanks for posting it and I'm glad it was recorded.

When he went into the dark alternate future of what would've happened if he stayed at Gamespot, it almost makes you glad that he got fired. It really seems like a positive thing in the end.

Jeff is very good at voicing his opinions on about any topic. You can tell by the way he talks that he knows a lot about the industry and it has taken him literally years of experience to get to this point. This talk was fantastic! Giant Bomb, as always, is in great hands.
