Let's Stay Home Tomorrow

Sony's virtual space for avatar excitement to go wide on December 11.

Virtual jeans for your virtual dude!
Virtual jeans for your virtual dude!
While it's still technically being classified as an open beta, Sony has announced that PlayStation Home will be available to all users as of tomorrow, December 11. Jack Buser, the director of PlayStation Home, also took some time go over some new features to be found in the PS3's new virtual world.

The new stuff includes a four-player minigame called Saucer Pop, where avatars get into UFOs and fly up to pop bubbles while avoiding bombs. The jukebox feature works on a voting system and all players will hear the song that gets the most votes.

Buser's communique also talks about what still seems like the driving factor behind PlayStation Home: product placement and branding. Activision, Disney, Eidos, EA, LucasArts, THQ, Ubisoft, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Red Bull, Ligne Roset, and Diesel are all going to be a part of Home. Some of this stuff has already surfaced in the form of Diesel clothing stores and spaces devoted to specific games.

The Red Bull area will feature an air race game. Here's some video of that in action:

It's going to be very interesting to see how the world reacts to PlayStation Home tomorrow.

I mean, why don't you just go outside and talk there instead of coming here? Why even use facebook or myspace? It's just a 3D hub for people to meet and play games..."
You're spot on.

Perhaps people can meet up and play games but Home is also the most sickening marketing tool there is..."
If it was a choice between seeing that "SPOTLIGHT" advert load up on the NXE every time I turn on my console or flying Red Bull planes through hoops -- I'd pick the planes every time. And let us not forget, I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO GO TO THE RED BULL HOME SPACE IF I'M SO OUTRAGED WITH THE ADVERTISING.

Gah did you guys stop watching TV aswell? I mean, advertising seems to get you SO mad. I'm all for creative advertising here. I'll never buy a Red Bull (keeps me awake at night) but I'll happily fly their digital planes.

I honestly do understand the scepticism and the criticism but like I've said a bajillion times already - you don't have to use it. It can sit there on your XMB like your "Life With Playstation" button and you need ever, ever, ever click on it.

I personally am quite excited to see what the likes of Disney etc. put on there.

EDIT: Oh and while I'm here - can I stop hearing this "dud0rz 360 haz Netflix its betterz than bluray" - get with the picture people... most of the world doesn't even have Netflix yet.

EDIT 2: And yes I will continue to keep defending Home because I think people are being unrealistically unfair on it. If Sony were saying this is £9.99, dude if Sony were saying this is £4.99 or whatever... I'd totally not buy it and I'd be outraged. But I repeat again - it's FREE. How the hell can you complain about freebies that you never have to use?

I mean you guys must turn down free promotional items they hand out in the streets too right? "Blatant advertising, ghastly company"."
lol good post man. i can't believe these guy is so SICKENED by advertisements in HOME, as if it would be any different in REAL LIFE. i can't imagine somebody logging onto home and being absolutely horrified by a POSTER!!! OMG on the wall, or a VIDEO ZOMG!!! on the wall. oh the horror, THE HORROR!!! *VOMITS FROM BEING SO SICKENED*

Do you really see home as a social hub and with some occasional ads? I see it as Advertising witch happens to have a social hub going on.

I'll check it out, but the avatars are lame just like it is on every system and I still have no clue what the purpose of home is for. It's buggy, laggy.choppy long loading and its basically advirtisement city.

You can say it's free all day but that only makes home worth trying. But unless one person can tell me the reason behind home then I don't see what the hype is about. I used it and the coolest thing I seen was 3 goof balls rapping in the middle of the bowling alley.

It's STILL not out in the UK and it's coming close to 8:30pm. My guess Sony messed up the servers somewhere. PSN was REALLY laggy when i was trying to get to the store.

I think Home would be a lot more interesting if it was the default PS3 dashboard... like, you turn on your PS3, and oh, there you are... in your PS3... maybe you're in your little virtual house... then you can virtually go outside, virtually explore the world, and then find games to start up...
it'd be like Virtual Reality 0.1

honestly, Home would be more interesting once we actually have virtual reality games...
i'll wait for the PS9

well I think this shows once again that Sony still have no idea how this whole internet and networking thing works.

They should call Microsoft or Blizzard and have them send over a "Dummies guide to online gaming and server capacity" because two years after launch they should know better.
