Mass Effect 3 Delayed into Early 2012

The ridiculously quick turnaround from Mass Effect 2 was apparently too good to be true.

When BioWare and Electronic Arts revealed Mass Effect 3 would be coming by the holiday season, less than two years after the release of Mass Effect 2, there was much celebrating. You'll have to store the party favors for a few more months, however: Mass Effect 3 has been delayed into early 2012.

"Today we have confirmed that Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012," said exec. producer Casey Hudson in a statement. "The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations. We'll have more details about specific dates as we get closer to release."

The note appeared on BioWare's message boards and Facebook pages.

Cue the sad trombone. But, hey, more time for Skyrim!

Q1 release worked pretty damn well last time.
Now if this comes out the same time as SWTOR I'm going to be a busy boy.

I was a little surprised when they announced the date that was not even 2 years after the last game.

Good, still time for me to play through ME1 and ME2. Also, we wouldn't want another Dragon Age 2....

I'm okay with this. The "annualization" of a franchise a la Call of Duty is never a good thing - I'd rather see them take some time to improve the game. Bioware has a good reputation for listening to its player base, even if the wisdom of their recent decisions leaves something to be desired...

They should take that time to really polish the game up. They are going to have to work hard to top ME2.

Well that's a bit sad, but on the plus side, it gives them more time to make it better. After the luke-warm reception of DAII (which was well deserved), BioWare have hopefully decided not to take any risks with ME3. Dragon Age II was a good game, but still a disappointment. Shorter, smaller, and far more repetitive than the first Dragon Age. That's what you get with a development cycle of less than a full year - re-used environments and fetch-quests! Now that they are putting some more months in ME3, hopefully we can avoid the same fate that was awarded to DAII.

Hopefully.

If it gives them time to refine things and make it even more amazing than 2, then I'm all for it. They really need to get more broad in the navigation and allow you to see more civilization and things you've never seen...and I don't want to see just recycled stuff from the second game either.

Not necessarily true. It could happen, but it's a little too early to speculate as to the cause of the delay. If it is because of multiplayer, it better be the most kick ass awesome multiplayer ever created because this trilogy never needed it in the past to be great and still dosen't.

If this is to make the single player better, then I welcome this delay (and many more) with open arms.

I don't really understand how the first game had more depth..  It had an inventory system that was used for nothing except breaking down items into omnigel and a slightly more elaborate skill tree.  I really don't know how anyone could call removing clunky features to be dumbing down..

That said, DA2 was pretty poorly received and apparently ME3's been delayed to make it "appeal to a wider audience".  Some have taken to assume that means more dumbing down or adding multiplayer... But I'd guess that they've gone back to add more RPG elements.
"
Well there were fewer stats to level, about 5 weapons total, and absolutely nothing to spend the currency they kept giving on.  Even if the weapons had the same name w/ "vii" tacked on there were tons, it felt like shops had a purpose (and therefore the world had a purpose)...I just think even if the systems were clunky they added to everything in a necessary way.  The second game felt like the first, but hollowed out and smoothed around the edges.

But at least it wasn't like Bioshock Infinity, where they announce the game and then explain that it's like 2 years away.

I'm actually relieved that this happened. Now I don't feel pressured to complete Mass Effect 2 as quickly as possible. That plus it'll give Bioware more time to polish it up even better.

Hopefully BioWare uses this time to improve on ME2 with more rpg elements. I can see the concern based off Riccitillo's comments, but it's probably difficult to hit that "sweet spot" between shooter and rpg.

Still, this delay  is probably for the best.
