Mass Effect 3 Demo Provides Temp XBL Gold Access

Bump into Gold territory will last until the game launches in early March.

In addition to a taste of multiplayer, the demo will have a brief single player component, as well.
In addition to a taste of multiplayer, the demo will have a brief single player component, as well.

Ordinarily, if a multiplayer-focused demo went up on Xbox Live, you’d need to have a Gold subscription in order to shoot at your friends, but that won’t be the case with Mass Effect 3.

When the Mass Effect 3 demo goes live on February 14, Silver members will temporarily graduate to Gold, and get all the benefits that come with that, including access to Hulu Plux, Netflix, etc.

According to Microsoft, the temporary lift will last “for the time leading to launch.” Mass Effect 3 is scheduled for March 6, so that’s a few weeks of playing around with Microsoft’s enhanced service.

Of course, there are no such requirements on PlayStation 3 or PC, so when the demo launches on both of those platforms on the same day, it’s business as usual. There is a single player component to the demo, as well, and you will not be able to import your save or custom Commander Shepard.

Can we at least customise the Shepard in the demo? I would like to see what new features they added (if any).

Hulu Plux really is the best value proposition for the money as far as TV-on-the-internet services go.

Cool, but since I plan to play the game on the PC, I think I need to play it there other wise I don't get the goodies or is that just stuff or Kingdoms of Amalur? It's all too confusing for me. Still, I would like to get a closer look at Hulu Plus since I'm not about to resubscribe to XBL just for that.

A little rubbed the wrong way that I'll be paying for a service Silver Members get for free. Maybe they'll extend existing Gold Members accounts a few weeks.

Oh for f's sakes... isn't the entitlement thing going just a tad bit far here?

There's no entitlement there; he's paying for a service that others will be given for free.

Entitlement - noun - belief that one is deserving of or entitled to certain privileges

So you're saying that this is not entitlement? One pays for the XBL service, and MS provides that service as agreed. That's the contract one has. That's it. Whether or not someone else receives something else has no bearing on that contract. So, the belief that you are deserving of additional privileges beyond that contract based on another's contract is in fact the definition of entitlement. You do not deserve benefit beyond that which you entered in to when signing up for the XBL service.

There's all entitlement there.

Holy Poop! I had no idea there was going to be a ME3 demo, and a MP one at that + a single player is really great. Having a MP demo seems like a really great idea especially for a loved franchise that has never done MP before. Seems weird to me that they would have a single player demo part though. Hopefully its one of them demos that does not have any of the actual single player story in it.

You must have not setup your Internet-Bunny-Ears in awhile, huh?

I know right? I am a total douche bag for pointing out that people should understand that when they agree to purchase something and a seller sells them something that its a binding contract and that when both parties fulfill that contract it's the end of the obligation. I'm a total douche bag for that. How dare I suggest that instead of being entitled and whining one should be an adult and look at something rationally. What a douche bag!

If only I could get on the interwebz and call people names. Wow, yeah, that would be so much better.

Yeah, that's a cute technicality, that you weren't calling people names, even though the net effect was basically the same, thus kind of making my point.

A multiplayer demo of a Mass Effect game, it's exactly what I wanted! I'm a bit weirded out by it being focused on MP. Did they release a demo of 2? Did that demo work alright without MP?

Edit: aw hell naw no save importing? Well, I guess that makes sense.

ME2's demo, very weirdly, came out something like six months AFTER the game's release. And it was fine without multiplayer, you just basically played through the first level up until you get to Miranda (I think, I already owned the game so I didn't really have a reason to get the demo. It may have gone as far as finding the Quarian on the first planet).

@ptys: I'd still encourage you to get it for the MP portion of it, to see if you like it. You don't have to look at the SP stuff (which does contain spoilery stuff if you want to go in fresh), but MP doesn't spoil a thing of the SP. :)

@Huey2k2 Maybe someone else is paying for them ? Maybe Microsoft pays ? Maybe they try to get a bigger club ? Crying over this is a bit like crying over why pc users gets xbox live for free, all year, as it's called that now.
Grow up, live with it and be a man, and not a boi, sometimes things gets advertised, guess what if you bought that ham last week that is 50% off this week you won't get it for free next week.

All multiplayer demos should work on silver. It's basically a sales pitch for gold. I don't have gold but if the ME3 multi player is good I might grab 3 months.
