Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Arrives Next Spring

Ground Zeroes lets players experience what leads to The Phantom Pain.

You’re right to be confused over Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The same game? Different releases? It’s the latter, and we’ll have a chance to play Ground Zeroes next spring.

No Caption Provided

Ground Zeroes is a prologue to the events in The Phantom Pain, and will be released in downloadable form on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for $30. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners can also play, with a retail disc arriving for $30, but download versions only costing you $20.

“There will be a significant difference in what Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain brings to the series,” said series creator Hideo Kojima in today’s press release, “so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game offers.”

Right now, there’s no release date for The Phantom Pain, though it’s hard to imagine we’ll see two Metal Gear releases in the same year.

All you guys asking for a PC version just reminds me of the strange history of the Metal Gear Solid series on PC.

The original Metal Gear Solid was released on PC by some company called Microsoft. It was a port of Metal Gear Solid: Integral which was only released in Japan, making this the only English language release of that version. Integral includes the VR Missions content on the second disc as well as some minor updates to the main game like a first-person mode and Very Easy difficulty which starts you out with an unlimited-ammo FAMAS.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance made its way to PC but it was a pretty buggy version in my experience and it had to compensate for the Dualshock 2's pressure sensitive buttons by requiring a ton of buttons.

Since then no version of any Metal Gear Solid game has been released on PC, so I really wouldn't hold my breath for a PC version.

@cybexx: I think people keep asking for the PC version because the first time Kojima showed off the Fox Engine (same video as all the Transfarring stuff) he said that the engine was designed to be used on all platforms, which he demonstrated by waving his hand over a PS3 controller, an Xbox 360 controller, and a computer mouse. Thus, implying what he was doing was coming to PC, but not actually saying it.

Cool ... so this means that next year I will have a new MGS experience and still can wait another year to get a next gen console ... that sounds great for my poor wallet :D

So, this is basically like cutting the Tanker chapter from MGS2 and selling it for $20-30. As much as this disgusts me, I know I'll be dropping $30 for the download come next spring.

Kojima set up that LA Based studio about 3 months ago.... they probably are handling all of these ports. This isn't plug and play, I mean look at Assassin's Creed's credits

Lighting Returns.....FF13 was just awful...The last thing I want is more of it, and top it off with the most boring character the series has ever seen.

Not only this, but the fact that next gen consoles are essentially x86 architecture PCs means most of the required heavy lifting has been done by virtue of those ports existing. With how things are now, I feel like the next gen games that won't be getting PC ports will be in the vast minority.

I really love that they introduced (what later turned out to be) the prologue game very directly as an MGS game, seemingly primarily as misdirection so that when The Phantom Pain was announced, it wasn't immediately obvious during the trailer it was an MGS game since there was already a different MGS game announced and the trailer purposely didn't identify the main character.

What an insane way to reveal a game and its prologue.

$30 seems steep. I bet just before PP comes out they heavily discount it for the promotional value.

Christ, is there a price point that doesn't prompt at least one person to say this kind of thing? We don't have the faintest idea how much actual content there's going to be in Ground Zeroes; how can you already be trotting out the "dollars per hour" value judgement?

Considering some versions of the game are $10 more for no apparent reason, I don't feel it's out of place to complain about that price

Both - The coming spring is also the next spring. It's 2014.

What in the world is this? I'm super confused. I thought those two teaser trailers were for the same game: Metal Gear Solid 5. What in the world...

It feels as if some of us in the comments are making very vast assumptions on something we know very little about. But such is the way of the Internet, so quick to jump to conclusions...

@thebigzed: Playstation 2 got a number of excellent games for YEARS after the PS3 launched. Persona 3-4, Ar Tonelico 1-2, Sakura Wars...all released between 2007-2010. however I'm with you, I don't think the PS3 will have the same staying power, for some reason.
