Microsoft Opens Wallet, Buys Gears of War Franchise

The next game will come from newcomer Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver.

We haven't heard much about the future of Gears of War, but that's probably because Epic Games decided it was done with the generation-defining franchise. Microsoft has purchased the property from Epic, and Vancouver-based Black Tusk Studios is handling the next game.

No Caption Provided

Black Tusk is new, and hasn't released a game yet. Its take on Gears of War will be Black Tusk's debut, but it will have some solid help in Rod Fergusson, the former director of production at Epic Games.

There are no details on the new Gears of War game. We only know there's another one coming, and it certainly wouldn't be surprising to hear it's the start of several new games.

We do know that former designer Cliff Bleszinski will not be involved. Bleszinski blogged about the news earlier today, wishing the new team well.

"My headspace is in the future now, not the past," he said. "I have come to realize that until you give people something new to focus on they will obsess about the past. (good problem to have!) To those of you who love Gears, I love you as well, and I appreciate your support through the years. The fandom, the cosplay, the tattoos, it all means more than any amount of money could ever mean. These recent events have steeled my resolve to make something entirely new."

As for Epic Games, the company continues to work on Fortnite. The studio confirmed today it has several games in development, but was not willing to disclose any details besides that.

Black Tusk Studios huh? According to the wiki, other than this, the only thing connected with them is an untitled trailer from last year's E3. Hopefully they will create some good stuff there.

I'm really curious what game was being teased in that video, especially since Gears is now going to be their debut title. I wonder if that other game has been shelved/cancelled or if it's going to start up as a two team studio. That's crazy ambitious if so.

Phil Spencer attempted to put a cover over that game and say that it never existed beyond the concept video shown at E3, something that was proven wrong by multiple people. On twitter his response was that their focus was now on Gears of War.

So basically they've shut that down in order to make another Gears of War game from what it sounds like.

WHAT IF...... They don't use the Unreal Engine 4 to develop this game? Makes your mind wander for a bit.

I hope I'm not in the miniotiry when I say this but, I kind of really like the Gears games. I was not big into 1 when it came out, but I remember loving 2 and I think Gears 3 is one of the best games of last gen. Judgement was okay too, I mean it was decent depite focusing on Baird of all fucking people. I'm happy about this and a new Gears for XBONE sounds awesome. I'm excited.

No one wants a new Gears! Except for the fuckton of people who will buy it when it comes out because it's the first Gears game on new hardware.

Some of you guys have a really deluded and insular view of things.

The same people that poo poo this announcement will be the same people that end up buying the game 2-3 years from now.

Gamers are stupid like that.

I know enough guys at Black Tusk to believe they haven't shelved their original ip yet, otherwise I would have been seeing a bunch of guys leave Black Tusk recently. According to Cliff Bleszinski's blog post this transaction happened last week so I doubt anything much beyond some rudimentary pre-production planning has happened.

They are already working with Unreal 4 and I would have to imagine something pretty catastrophic would need to happen for them to suddenly shelve their original game in favour of the 3+ years it would take to develop a Unreal 4 powered Gears of War sequel, my bet is on two teams.

Man, I'm surprised it took this long for MS to buy the Gears IP.

I thought GoW Judgement sold like shit. Now they cancel a game featuring a new IP that theoretically could have come out in the next 12 months for yet another GoW that will probably take two years to create.

Oh well.

I really was hoping Black Tusk would be developing a new IP. Gears is fine and all but I just wanted something new. Feels like microsofts in house developers always play it safe. Probably just a sign of the times where it's too risky to bet on new IPs when you can rely on a guaranteed seller.

Aww that's a shame. I actually know a bunch of guys at Black Tusk (used to work with them). I'll have to pass on my condolences.

The Cliffster ( cause we're not supposed to call him Cliffy anymore ;-) ) has been very interested in the Oculus. Man I hope he puts a team together to make the first killerapp ( literally? ) for VR. Please please please make it so.

Epic isn't interesting anymore, they are now owned by some huge chinese investor who wants to monetise the unreal-engine. Most creative talent of note has moved on. Gears is also not interesting anymore to most. Sure the brand name will give you a certain number of guaranteed sold copies which is good for the suits, but innovation is something else entierely!!

I would love another gears game. Judgement was quite frankly, just awful. Although if they made Black tusk cancel its new IP to work on gears.....then I'm a little saddened.

My Take:
Okay, Microsoft you own it, and it is great for you that Sony cannot get at it ever have it to rub in your face. But please, let it lay fallow for a few years.

I think there is value in the Gears of War universe, hell just in terms of comics, novels, and other media there is value in OWNING the property. But for gaming I think a few years need to go by before a new game is presented. I appears form my vantage point that anticipation for another game isn't there. So I think MS is wrong to be hinting at another game even if it does take 18 more months to see it.

I think Gears would make sense at the end of the Xbox One life cycle, but only after the game itself can take advantage of systems and ideas that will come to fruiting in this current generation.

Microsoft had tasked Black Tusk to make a new massive franchise. I've heard "Halo-scale franchise". It's a game they have been working on since 2012 and would most likely come out before a new Gears game since something lika that wouldn't even be in pre-production at this point bacause they just got the rights to it.

@raven10: Yeah, I belive the studio has well over 100 employees and will most likely expand further the coming year now that they are a two game studio and most likely need a second team.

@monkeyking1969: The end of the Xbox One cycle? That's a decade away, man, at the very least. There's no way they'd buy a license and just sit on it for that long.

Interested to see what the Windows App Store/Arcade offerings would be. I never was into GoW, but I wouldn't mind a good "bite sized" game along the lines of what was done with Infamous:Festival of Blood.

Seems pretty smart. Locking down, popular multi-player franchises at the start of a cycle sounds like solid business. I wonder if Sony had a bid in. Even if MS didn't want to make another, buying the franchise to keep it off the PS4 almost makes sense on its own.

@pj: Yea I hope they don't cancel the new IP and just move the team over to this. I've heard a lot of great things coming from inside that studio. All super hush, hush and all but it sounded like they were doing something really big and had a really great team assembled to do it.

Nice way of throwing money away! Buying a franchise that is past its high point much like Halo. It will be with those franchises that you will sell a lot of new consoles to the crowds of the last generation, righ!

To be honest for me Gears has run its course with me as I am no longer interested in that franchise. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft can do to reinvigorate the franchise because it definitely needs it.

Crazy timing for this as I just beat Gears of Wars 3 about 2 hours ago. I hadn't played, god knows why. I thought it was really good and I'm excited to play judgement now if I can find a copy cheap. It's sad to think it's over for Epic but hopefully this new company will make a good game. In the end that is all that matters.
