Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 3DS Apps Delayed

Moving data between platforms and enabling 3DS online play will have to wait a few days.

No Caption Provided

With a lengthy flight to and from Boston in my immediate future, I was looking forward to transferring my Dual Blades-wieldin’ assassin, Detta, from my Wii U to my 3DS.

That’s not to be.

Capcom's revealed two applications meant to launch with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate have been delayed until Friday, March 22.

The “data transfer program” is what allows saved data to move between both versions of the game, perfect for hunting and gathering during a commute, while the “packet relay tool” is what allows 3DS users to play online using the Wii U as a conduit. Otherwise, only local play is possible on the handheld.

“We sincerely apologize for the delay and appreciate that eager fans are looking forward to the feature set offered by the two apps,” said the company on its community site, Capcom Unity.

Ah well. I guess I’ll...read.

In the meantime, why not check out our Quick Look? I didn't spend 12 hours preparing for nothing!

Is there a technical limitation as to why you have to use the Wii U as a means to go online with the 3DS version?

@tyxja: Well there are other 3DS games that feature online play, so no technical issue there. If I had to guess its because they want an easy way to keep you online data between both versions in sync. But again, why this wouldn't be handled server side is beyond me.

Since Monster Hunter 4 will have online play right out of the gate, obviously no. The 3DS version of MH3 just wasn't designed for it (it came out in 2011 in Japan after all).

The data transfer really seems like a non issue because I can't imagine that many people would have both copies (but then again, I can't say I know how committed MH fans are), but the requirement of a WiiU to play the 3DS game online seems incredibly dumb.

I played about 3 hours on the Wii U and when I started to get a bad feeling that the app wasn't going to be up before I left for PAX on Friday, I decided to play on 3DS instead. Glad I decided to do that, and since it was mostly tutorial that 3 hours was caught up to in 1 hour instead, but I'm really bummed that I haven't been able to spend any of my current Monster Hunter time on a bigger screen with better controls.

This is an unfortunate delay for those who took advantage of the Amazon deal where buying both the Wii U and 3DS version gave you a considerable discount.

As for the 3DS-Online-WiiU packet relay tool thing, please keep in mind that the two games were separated by a ~1 year gap in Japan where the main audience is. With Capcom focusing efforts on the more ambitious Monster Hunter 4, it is no surprise that the 3DS version of MH3U didn't get some sort of patch to squeeze in online multiplayer.

After watching that quick look I really want to play this game but I don't have a Wii U or 3DS.

This is mostly unfortunate because PAX would be the ultimate place to play the game, and those who started on the Wii U version are SOL.

@tyxja: It's just that the 3DS version like the PSP games was local-play only. The WiiU which came out a long while after the 3DS version in Japan, was the one that added online. The Pass through app just acts like adhoc party or whatever. The 3DS version could have had online if they wanted it to but it didn't come up because JAPAN.

As long as me and my girlfriend can kill monsters together in the same room on 2 3ds's after i have my surgery tomorrow I don't mind a delay like this. though it hurts some people's experience but not mine in particular.

... i can do local co op still right?

The game looks like total dogshit on the 3DS anyway. I don't see how you'd play that game on anything but a 3DS XL.

The cross save feature seems pretty great for this game, and a better fit than with any other that's come before. Since Monster Hunter breaks down into slow hunting and gathering time and multiplayer boss fight epic mayhem time, it seems like you could do your multiplayer on the console where it'll look great and have online but take care of material collection and gear crafting on the bus.

@a_cute_squirtle: Maybe you only have a normal 3DS?

You can still enjoy the new, smooth framerate.

In question... Does anyone know if I start my save on 3ds, can that be transferred to the wii u? I only see info about the wii u save being portable to the 3ds. If any one knows, that would be rad.

@supergooder: Yes, you can transfer the save back and forth between the Wii U and 3DS.

The game doesn't even come out in the UK till the 22nd, so it's all good here :P

Although I don't have a WiiU, so these things are irrelevant to me.

Have you got a Circle Pad Pro? Might be worth it if you are gunna be playing a lot on the 3DS. I have no WiiU, so it was essential for me.

I was going to buy this after the quicklook until I found out you can't go online with the 3DS version (don't have a wii). I think I'll continue my original plan of waiting for soul sacrifice next month and MH 4 next year.

I'm guessing he took the name from the Dark Tower series.

Game dosent even come out in the UK until Friday so dosent really effect us, still, it is annoying when a game dosent launch with all of its promised features intact.

@chavtheworld: I have a 3DS XL, so getting a Circle Pad Pro means a pricy import. If more games come out that I'm interested in take advantage of the Circle Pad Pro, then I may consider it, but really I mainly got the 3DS version for PAX and other trips, and the period between now and the April update for off screen support on the Wii U version.

Oh, I thought the CPPXL was supposed to launch at the same time as MH3U.

I really wish Capcom would port this game to a system my friends and I actually have... I love my 3DS but I'd much rather play it one my 360 where all of my friends are.

I tried the 3DS demo and really liked it but the lack of online multiplayer is a pretty big thing for a game like this. I really, really hope that Monster Hunter 4 will get a release outside of Japan. From what i've seen it looks absolutely fantastic.

I see all the statements about how long ago the game came out and the lack of online play, but Pokemon Diamond and Pearl had early rudimentary wifi capability on the DSi in 2008. Granted it is a turn-based game and requires less data transfer, but the tech was there already established then. Even if MH3 launched in Japan without the online multiplayer, it still seems like a weird oversight for it to come to the US three years later without it. In Western markets, without the substantiality of daily commutes around other people with the same gaming consoles/games, online play is far more important than local. Even if it had to go the Pokemon route of friend codes (which are available on a system level now), the complete omission of online play and the retroactive addition which requires a Wii U just screams that Capcom still misunderstands its Western audience in some fundamental ways.

still tempted to pick up the 3ds version for the portability of it (and that i don't have a wii u) but wondering how much the experience will suffer if i don't have anyone to play against. i know it's not the same but i'm perfectly fine playing grind-heavy games like diablo 3 and torchlight II by my lonesome.

It's in both shops now. It's not on the front page but if you search "monster hunter" it will show up. I just downloaded both the Wii U and 3DS tools

Man... forcing you to use a wiiu to play it online on the 3ds sucks ass... I hope someone will come up with a thing you install on a PC that does this...

I was really considering getting a 3DS to play some MH3, but now I think i'll just hold up till MH4 comes anyway...

Looks sort of interesting, guess it's not Xbox or PC so I don't have to worry about owning it. The in-between portions look ass though.
