Nintendo Slashes 3DS Price to $169.99, Early Adopters Get Free Games

The house that Mario built seems to have taken disappointing hardware sales to heart.

No Caption Provided

3DS has not lit the world on fire in the same way DS did. You can blame your smartphone for that. When DS launched, devices like the iPhone did not exist. Decent video games were not available for your mobile phone!

That's all changed, and Nintendo's glasses-free 3D gimmick hasn't been enough to sway customers to drop $249.99 for its new handheld.

Maybe they'll pay $169.99, though, which is the new retail price of 3DS, effective August 12.

Nintendo also confirmed release months for Super Mario 3D Land (November) and Mario Kart 7 (December). Wait, Mario Kart...7? Really? I wouldn't be surprised if that one changed before release.

If you (like me) already bought a 3DS and are cringing, Nintendo's hoping to appease early adopters with the "3DS Ambassador" program, which roughly translated into English means "free stuff."

First, you'll gain access to 10 free Virtual Console games from the NES era, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. The others five aren't known, and all ten will become publicly available for purchase at a later date.

Additionally, Nintendo's offering up another 10 free Game Boy Advance titles. The games include Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. The other five weren't listed, but that's a hell of a list already.

Strangely, Nintendo claims these free GBA titles won't be made available to everyone else.

"Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future," reads the press release.

More details about the program are to be announced, but Nintendo's only requirement is that players connect to the eShop before 11:59 p.m. EST on August 11. Before the price drop, basically.

Sony can't be very happy about this aggressive move. Many did not expect the company to hit a $249.99 price point for Vita.

If they are serious about holding Metroid Fusion hostage to this ambassador's club bullshit people are going pirate it like mad. I really hope they rethink that last part.

Makes me wonder how much these handhelds cost to manufacture if they can slash prices that deep so soon.

I just hope the 3DS recovers. then again, Nintendo's hyper-casual approach for the past 5 years certainly hasn't helped itself now.

I doubt it will fail like the virtual boy. There is a new ad campaign currently airing in the UK at least that focuses quite nicely on how the 3DS is not a DS, and is fact graphically superior. I presume the virtual boy failed because it hardly worked well as a gaming machine. The 3DS is actually quite a nifty piece of kit as far as I can tell so far!

Not offering those GBA titles to anyone, ever, seems sort of suicidal. They'll renege and say they meant they wouldn't offer them free, once they hit the store sometime next year.  Kinda wish I had $250 to blow before the 12th, solely to guarantee myself a copy of Mario Kart Super Circuit, though.

the thing is the 3ds isnt a doomed handheld, they released it at a high price when we are in a global recession, thats why it hasnt sold that well, plus the lack of good AAA games didnt help it. The 3ds is still a great handheld, i prefer it over my DSi anyday. its easier to get a smart phone like a iphone cos you get the device almost free with a long monthly contract so there is no need to pay 300+ for the iphone itself on day 1.

Shoot, that is what the price should have been from the start.  Honestly thou, I don't think any handheld should cost more then $100.

Damn, that price drop is a pretty big hit for Nintendo, and $170 sounds really tempting, but I think I still might hold out for a wider selection of good games. Right now it seems the only thing I really want to (re)-play is Ocarina of Time. Just personal preference, though. Great news for everyone who's really been wanting a 3DS but couldn't afford it.

No I blame the Fact That it Has no games except for ports of Crap N64 games  (N64 AKA nintendos worst console where nintendos suckage started and they lost he number 1 spot.)

If nitendo had games for this thing other than the crap N64 goames I already got in my closet  I might have bought one But since they don't have any fucking games on this thing worth buying I did not get one for $250   I might as well wait since I would not be using the fucking thing until it got games anyway it would sit and  collect dust like the fucking wii did ....

No no wait it more like the fucking n64 it launched with 2 games and had nothing but crap  for months, hell I was so desprate to play something on that crap machine I even rented fucking turok and goldeneye and those games fucking sucked  I have a fucking pc to play unreal and quake  in 1996-1997 I did not need that crap console first person shooter with bad dumb as rocks aI and an auto AIM.

OH and the Virtual boy sit next to the failure of the n64 and i have not played that thing since like fucking 1998 and it launched with no games too see a pattern nintendo   launchin your fucking systems with no games Don't work any more keep the things a fucking secret, make games for it then launch it  this has nothing to do with fucking phones.  Hell you launched the game cube with out a Killer APP game too there was no Mario,  and lugi's mansion/ wave race was not a fucking killer APP.  Launch your hardware with stuff that shows what the system does from now on and make people want the fucking thing and the DS had fucking mario 64,  (and yoshi touch and go and it was good but it was no fucking killer app.)

Your last 5 hardware launches have had nothing but sucky or no games So I learned my lesson and don't buy your crap on launch day anymore I buy it when it has games  that are good  and hell even by then you put out like 4 more colors of the hardware anyway I get to pick from or in the case of the DS a smaller system.

I think the pricedrop for me means that I'll purchase a 3DS sooner rather than later because I was planning to wait anyways for the price to come down. Now I just don't have to wait for as long as I did. I didn't feel compelled to buy OOT on a new system when the VC option was readily available for me, and the majority of the launch titles (not all, mind you) didn't peak my interest. . I do like what's coming on the horizon, though, and I have enough of a backlog (and school) now that I don't feel it necessary to buy just yet.

I am very happy with this compensation that Nintendo is offering for 3DS early adopters. I assumed there was some risk (in terms of a price drop of a new version of the hardware) when I bought the 3DS; so, it is great that I get some free games as reward for that risk. Moreover, they are giving away a lot of games and some quality ones too.

Nintendo announce 3DS price gamers complain , Nintendo cuts the price and adds free games to previous owners gamers complain, am I missing something here?

You are missing the parts where it isn't worth even $169, the part where there are too few games out for it yet, and the part where the main feature is something most people will TURN OFF because it gives them a headache.

And what about the part where Nintendo isn´t force choking you to buy a 3DS? you don´t want one becuase X ,Y and Z? then don´t buy it, want one but you don´t like the price then wait for another price cut ,again another gamer that gives me more reason to think a big part of the community is composed of whiners
