No Grand Theft Auto V in 2009

Rockstar puts the kibosh on rumors of a new GTA this year.

Rumors have been flying this week about there potentially being a new full-sized Grand Theft Auto game coming out in 2009.  It all started with the most recent issue of Game Informer, which speculated that this full retail game would “follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc.” Sadly, it sounds like Vinny's dreams of a Grand Theft Auto: Blade Runner won't be coming true anytime soon, as Kotaku has received word directly from Rockstar stating that, while it intends on releasing two pieces of episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV this year, there are no plans for a full-fledged sequel just yet.

If anything, it would seem that Rockstar is interested in creating more episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV, with Kotaku citing a recent USA Today interview with Rockstar's Dan Houser, who implied that the developer was still just “scratching the surface” on Liberty City. Considering the time and money that went into the development of Grand Theft Auto IV, it would seem to me that continuing to build on that effort would make a whole lot more sense than starting a new city from scratch.
