No, That Absurd Witcher 2 Patch Isn't Actually 9GB

An issue with Steam is causing users to download the whole game over again.

I saw more than a few people complaining on this here Internets last night about a crazy 9GB patch for CD Projekt's The Witcher 2. When exactly does a "patch" stop being a "patch"?

Turns out the whole thing is an error. CD Projekt's told me the patch is much more reasonable--less than 20MB--but an issue with Steam specifically forced users to basically download the whole game all over again. As far as CD Projekt can tell, it's only a Steam problem right now.

"We’re working with Steam to get the issue sorted by Monday morning," a company spokesperson said.

Darn. Gamers with digital pitchforks fighting over 9GB would've made a more interesting story.

Time to run from the big, bad bandwidth monster.

I thought it had to be something like this considering the patch I downloaded off GOG.com was only about 9MB.

This has happened before with some games, where Steam would just redownload the entire game along with the patch. If I recall, Company of Heroes and Dawn of War II were suspect to this. Needless to say that shit was annoying.

Steams been doing this error for a ton of games the past month or two. I couldn't help but facepalm at all the hate that The Witcher 2 got from the people who had the steam version like it was CD Projekt's fault..  Ignorance isn't always bliss

It actually isn't the entire game. The Witcher 2 just has 1 file that is 9GB in size and there was a 20meg change to that file. Steam doesn't patch, they just replaces the file. It is unfortunate that this file is that size, but CDPR says having the single file increases performance.

GoG.com version owner here, supporting CDP directly with no hassle.

Feels good, man.

Seriously though, I've been on the receiving end of this game redownload thing many times with my Steam games. Strange that hasn't been fixed after these years...

Ah ok, so it wasn't just me. I had to re-download the entire thing last night. I wasn't happy about it. Good to know that it's not my computer being screwy, though...

The patch for every version of the game except for Steam is like 16mbs.

I would've been pretty pissed about this if it wasn't for my new and shiny 30mbit line... That is really stupid though. I thought Steam was able to download just the parts of files, but it seems I'm wrong.

I'm thinking the same issue is going on with Company of Heroes, as for the patch for it is over 4GB.

Yep. I just pause the downloads and retry them later, it's usually sorted out quite quickly.

I have had this problem with other games as well. It just randomly wants to download a game that I already own, which is a real bandwidth killer.

People having issues with Steam downloading the whole game again?  I was having problems with getting Steam to actually download the whole game.  I remember with both of Fallout New Vegas' DLCs, Steam only downloaded a third of the pack and said it was complete.  I had to verify the game content for it to download the other 2/3 of each DLC.

Doing just fine with my premium box copy getting the official patch straight from CDP.  What? I wanted the dice and cards like any TW1 fan should.

Ah no wonder, I was pondering as to why the FUCK I couldn't play it after quitting it for a small break.

No probs though, bought Terraria to play in the meantime.

But it did catch me off guard.

The DVD copy has been pretty damn awesome.  1.1 patch removed the secureROM drm (install # limits).  The hardcopy instruction manual is pretty nice.  I got the collector edition with the video DVD and soundtrack, and the world manual which are all also very nice.  Best of all the 1.1 patch added an auto-patching feature at startup.

Why buy the Steam version of a game like this?

Bandwidth issues don't seem so big anymore.  Tons of people bitched in my province (yes, in fucking Canada) so they more than doubled my monthly cap and also boosted my speed for free.  Yelling at your ISP always works.  It always has for me.

Retail boxed version patch was 28MB I think.  Steam can't patch parts of files, only a complete file, which is why you have to re-download 9GB.  Not sure how they will "sort that out" unless Steam can change this overnight.

In any event, good patch that removed DRM and sorts out the DLC issues.

Remember that Steam itself is DRM. You can't remove all of the DRM from the steam version without disconnecting it to Steam, which is not something I think Valve is willing to do.

Only being able to patch it by re-downloading the entire game. Now that would be crazy.

I bought this game on GOG because I'm on that site all the time anyway, but besides that, no DRM is a great reason. A simple installer, a free game, and a discount was nice too.

So.... Why do your stories have all the same titles as RPS titles? Are they really so formulaic, or is one of you pulling stories from each other? Or am I crazy in thinking that like, 4 stories from today and yesterday have identical titles to RPS (RockPaperShotgun) stories?

EDIT: Nope, Rockmelt just fucked up the icons on my feeds.

With the speed of my internet connection combined with the time the patch probably went live. Chances are I never noticed it download. Even if it downloaded the whole game again it would have only taken about 20 minutes.

@tourgen: Because I don't care about any of the stuff you mentioned. I don't care for driving the store or the physical disc and case. Bandwidth isn't a problem for me that's why I most stuff through Steam.

The only thing retail stores, at least where I live, have over Steam is that they are most of the times cheaper. Usually there is a €10 difference for new releases which does add up when you buy a lot of games.

Yeah, I know. I was hoping there was some magic voodoo that made even the Steam version non-DRM.

I have had Steam redownload a few games before for some reason (sometimes partially), but the game that had that issue the worst was Company of Heroes. I eventually just uninstalled it because it was too annoying.
I guess I made the right choice by buying TW2 off GOG, then. The patch was something like 15 MBs after extraction.
