Nostalgia, Money and Pyramid Heads

How contract disputes forced Konami to get new voice actors for Silent Hill 2's HD update...before it ended up bringing the old ones back, anyway.

No Caption Provided

The current state of Silent Hill is up for debate, but few would dispute the surreal brilliance of Silent Hill 2. Disturbing, sexual and profoundly scary, Silent Hill 2 seemed to completely realize the original promise of Silent Hill’s horrific ambitions.

Subsequent games have been varying degrees of quality, depending who you talk to--I'd argue Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was great--but Team Silent, now disbanded, seemed to reach Silent Hill’s pinnacle during its second ghostly visit.

Some may have found Silent Hill 2 simply scary, but it was more profound for its devoted fans.
Some may have found Silent Hill 2 simply scary, but it was more profound for its devoted fans.

It’s no surprise, then, that fans of Silent Hill 2 would be a rapturous bunch, as devoted fans are wont to do. Messing with nostalgia is a dangerous game, one Konami undertook themselves after revealing a high-definition collection of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 was in the works.

This version, however, would not feature the game’s original voice actors. This version, Konami said, would have brand-new voice actors. This version, fans reacted, would not be one they would blindly support.

Fans started reaching out to the voice actors from Silent Hill 2, many of whom who have remained engaged with the community since the game’s release on PlayStation 2 in 2001. Many don't work in games anymore.

Like so many things in life, the problems started with money.

After Konami released the first trailer of the new voice actors, the community was abuzz. "VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET" declared one comparison video. The reaction was profoundly negative, as it usually goes with changes to beloved history.

Guy Cihi, the voice behind Silent Hill 2 hero James Sunderland and both then and today more businessperson than actor, wrote an open letter to Konami on August 28 via Facebook. Cihi claimed Konami never negotiated the rights to use the acting outside of the original game, and he and the cast would be owed money if his contributions to Silent Hill 2 were used again.

The letter came just days after comments from Troy Baker in an interview with The Gaming Liberty. Baker is the new voice of James and a rising voice actor, having contributed to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Batman: Arkham City and others.

"The fact that he’s [Cihi] talking about residuals being in videogames shows you just how out of the loop he is because residuals don’t happen," he said. "They don’t exist. Don’t think for a second that I don’t wish that I had a fraction of a penny for every unit sold of Call of Duty: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 or Modern Warfare 3 that we’re finishing up right now. [...] Guy was the one who was outspoken about it and said that unless this happens he wouldn’t do it, so he forced Konami’s hands. So if anybody wants to blame anybody for why they chose new voices, they can go back to the original James."

Strong words.

The issue over residuals has been brought up in the past. The New York Times once profiled voice actor Michael Hollick, who gave life to Niko Bellic in Grand Theft Auto IV. Hollick revealed he was paid $100,000 for his duties on the game. GTA IV has sold more than six million copies since, but Hollick saw nothing past his original payment.

Cihi said he’d been contacted by Konami once to negotiate the release of the rights but never heard back with a written proposal, and simply assumed Konami simply decided to go the cheaper route of employing new actors. In his letter, Cihi announced he'd decided to waive his rights, hoping that would allow the original voices to now be included in the collection.

Konami did not answer my request for comment on the status of Silent Hill 2’s voice acting.

Several moments lead to Cihi's letter, he told me recently, including the fan reaction, and a realization that preserving Silent Hill 2’s legacy was more important than money, informed by a past experience with a business he co-founded in the 90s.

“I sold my shares in that business back to the other partners and I left to pursue other things,” he said. “Immediately after I left, they started systematically erasing me from company archives. Which was hard to do because I was literally everywhere. It was like in the old Soviet Union when they would 'disappear' people from group photos taken with Stalin. When I saw Konami had blurred my face and completely failed to mention me in the making of video, a switch flipped in my head and...I lost it.”

Eddie was another memorable character from Silent Hill 2, though one less remembered for his smarts.
Eddie was another memorable character from Silent Hill 2, though one less remembered for his smarts.

Cihi does not represent the entire Silent Hill 2 cast, however.

A fan video taped a panel at NDK 2011 featuring prominent voice actress (and Silent Hill singer) Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, where she explicitly said the original actors had no rights to residuals. She has reason to know; she directed the replacement voice actors for the high-definition version, and she actually took on the updated role of Mary and Maria. The video's been taken down, but according to her, Konami reached out to Cihi and based on his response, felt re-recording was necessary.

Monica Taylor Horgan, who voiced Mary and Maria originally, also wanted to work out a deal for the original voice acting to be preserved, but in a more private manner.

“I felt like he [Cihi] had some valid gripes but that maybe it was due to misunderstanding the VO [voice over] industry and the corporate structure at Konami regarding Silent Hill 2,” she told me. “Guy is a very smart, educated businessman--but that doesn't necessarily make him an expert in the narration/VO industry. Anytime a savvy businessman gets handed a waiver or contract and is asked to sign without knowing what it's concerning, it would raise concerns. But a phone call may have been a better option maybe.”

“I think everyone concerned wishes at this point that they had done things a little differently,” she said.

Schaufele (Eddie) and Cihi (James) signing the paperwork to hopefully pave the way forward.
Schaufele (Eddie) and Cihi (James) signing the paperwork to hopefully pave the way forward.

At least for fans, it looks like everything might turn out just fine in the end. Konami accepted Cihi’s offer, as did other cast members from Silent Hill 2. Cihi released a photo of himself and David Schaufele, who played Eddie, signing a rights waiver. Even though Konami did not release an official comment to me, Cihi specifically thanked Konami producer Tomm Hulett, who is working on the upcoming high-definition collection.

That's a good sign.

Cihi said he plans to meet up with Horgan, Schaufele, and Hulett for pizza and beer next month.

That's another good sign.

All this friction is driven by a connection people have to the material, a story of torment and discovery. And monsters. A decade later, Cihi and Horgan are still hearing from fans who were touched.

“I have a friend on Facebook now," said Horgan, describing her favorite memory with fans. "A young man with cystic fibrosis, who can't get close to people in his hospital because of protective clothing, etc. who relates more to Silent Hill and how Mary feels about being a burden to her family--than he does to people around him. Hearing from him, that was unforgettable, and being able to connect him with others out here that might feel the same.”

While Konami remains quiet, the likely scenario is the ability to switch between both sets of voices.

Silent Hill 3 is getting reworked voices, as well, but a reference by fansite Silent Haven suggests it may get the same treatment as Silent Hill 2. Konami's been silent. There's no set release date for the collection, but Konami had been aiming for this fall.

Thank God corporations can continue making money on voice actors without paying any royalties. After all, they are the reason games exist and should never have to share money with the people the fans enjoy.

If the new acting is any better i'm all for it.

I'm a fan of Silent Hill 2 to the point where I'd consider scratching the name into my arm with a rusty nail but I too felt awkward at the horrible voice acting of the original. It often tore me straight out of blissful immersion, a whiny reminder that I was still stuck in reality playing this game - and the reality is the original VO, while fine in some places, was mostly a damnable failure.

I would love to hear more of Mary Elizabeth's take on Mary and Maria, and have the option to remove Guy-whatshisname who did James Sunderland. For nostalgias sake, the perfect solution in my mind is having OG VO and new VO optional.

Just keep it intact to the way it was , is it a new game ? Nope , then there's no point in the new voice-overs. Sure it may be better or worse , I don't care about the new voice overs , I just want the memories of the game to be as it was, end of discussion. This is not a remake , just a HD version of it.

@Rolyatkcinmai Well that probably won't happen, because the majority of the Mass Effect acting is perfectly fine. On the other hand, they would probably clean up the texture pop and the problems with the geometry. Silent Hill, that voice acting aside from Maria was bad. Especially fucking Angela.

@somekindarobot Wait, you want the graphics fixed but not anything else, that doesn't make sense. If they're going to clean up the graphics, they should do whatever else is necessary to clean the game up. It doesn't make sense to want complete faithfulness in the VA but not in the presentation.

I think it would be great if it had two options, HD remake with the new voices and the nice visuals, or Original, in 480 with the old voices.

I was kind of laughing in my head about how silly Silent Hill 2 fans are being, but then I thought about how I would feel about a re-release of Mass Effect in ten years having new voice actors, and that would really irk me.

I loved both those Silent Hill games a great deal, yet lacking the misguided sense of entitlement that fanbases tend to have, I wasn't pissed but rather sad to see what double helix had done with Silent Hill: Homecoming. Reading this article was the first time I read anything about an HD version of Silent Hill 2 and 3, and it kind of made me wish they'd just leave those two games alone and instead focus the effort into something more in the lines of Shattered Memories, which was a good game, yet could have been much greater.

I was just going to buy this collection because I wanted to play those games again. I have Silent Hill 2 for the original Xbox and don't have 3 anymore. Now, until I can get it confirmed that they are using the original tracks I am not going to buy it. After hearing the new VO I hate it. I am not stuck in the past and think the original VO was amazing or anything, I just want It exactly how it was with a fresh coat of paint so to speak. If i can't have that then I don't want it

SH 2 and the rest had terrible voice acting, people mad at this are fools.

That fat kid was the worst by the way. At least they are reworking problems with the game.

Back then bad voice acting was normal, but today there's a different standard. I'm all for in the new and out with the old. I already own them all. So actually putting efford unlike Capcom... I give them credit.

While the new voice acting is certainly more believable, it does kind of detract from Silent Hill 2. That game was a beautiful confluence of happy accidents. The occasionally off translation, coupled with the somewhat stilted and nonplussed voice acting, made the whole experience disturbingly alien. It felt like no one involved was human, or at least could not react to the horror around them in any meaningful way, which in turn gave the experience a nightmarish dreamlike quality. While the improved delivery and dramatic tension of the new voice acting might have better helped to convey a sense of reality, that reality in turn would undercut everything that makes Silent Hill unique and unsettling. It's scarier when the guy with the gun talking about killing people doesn't really sound like what he's saying is all that big a deal, rather than when he uses a generic grizzled "creepy dude voice".

To put it a different way changing the voice acting would be like replacing the backwards talking dream sequences of Twin Peaks with more sophisticated auto-tuned effects. It just isn't the same.

Now I really want to autotune those dream sequences in Twin Peaks and make a trance remix. Who's with me?

...

Dammit, now I want that too.

First, I'm going to echo that this was well presented, Patrick. Thanks.

It's hard to find video game fans more fickle than Silent Hill fans, and I should know - I'm one of them. Silent Hill is such a personal experience, I guess it makes sense that people are so protective of the core games. Still, I've already experienced Silent Hill 2. New or old voice actors make no difference to me now, and people new to Silent Hill 2 certainly don't care. So why should I get upset if a new audience doesn't experience a game the same way I did? If I have children, I'm not going to make their first Zelda experience be NES Zelda just because that's the way it was for me.

Really, my best response in these cases is that there's a reason people are passionate about certain things, but the fact that they are passionate is not the reason to be moved one way or the other.

All these games I spent time tracking down for the PS2 are getting HD rereleases. I'm personally disappointed that Konami isn't going the extra mile and included 4 & 1 in this package, at the very least 1's inclusion would represent the entire trilogy.

I'm also disappointed that in this game preservation of a classic games requires the little guys to take one for the team rather then having the large corporation share some of the profits with the actors whose "talents" helped make the game what it was in the first place. One that note, I wonder if the original designers, artists and programmers see any money for these rereleases.

Oh and on a completely unrelated I'm also disappointed that the Ajax loading of the comment pages refreshes the add comment box, losing whatever you typed in it.

Fans are fucking stupid. The re-recorded voices sounded fine. They sounded NOTICEABLY BETTER in nearly every respect I saw in that comparison video Patrick linked in this line: "After Konami released the first trailer of the new voice actors, the community was abuzz. "VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET" declared one comparison video."

Jesus Chist. This is why production companies ignore nerds most of the time - because they're so fucking stupid. They just love to complain about the dumbest shit in the world.

Congratulations. Silent Hill 2 has bad voice acting again, nerds.

edit: After watching a comparison video I don't really see what is wrong with the new voices besides maybe Eddy. Why not just record both and include the option at the beginning of the game? This all seems very silly.

I think they need to re-do them in 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound...and have a more crisp feel to them.

They should include uncompressed audio in the new game and the graphics better not be "fake hd" like resident evil 4 hd, cause that remake looked identical to the ps2 version w/HD tagged onto it -__-

I really enjoyed this article. As a fan of Silent Hill, having beaten every game in the series, it was great to learn more about the voice actors and actresses that provided the talent behind some very interesting characters. Having just played the ICO/Shadow collection, I am also pretty psyched to see more games I love come out in high-resolution.

I've been watching this one since the controversy began in early September, from Twin Perfect to Silent Hill Heaven to the now defunct Hell Descent, to Silent Haven, the last of which played a role in bringing together the actors and the publishers.

I'm hoping that this controversy will be a turning point for Silent Hill. Bad decisions on the developer side have been mirrored by poor attitude among the fanbase for a long time now, but this project and Downpour look to be very earnest efforts.

I played SH2 for the first time a year back and I thought the voiceacting was pretty spot on. It doesn't consist of beautiful renditions of the script, but it wasn't supposed to. These people felt more real and slightly twisted with the shaky and uncertain voices. Sometimes slight flaws can work in favor of a game, this one in particular. Providing both voiceacting options would turn this from a "no buy" to a "maybe" for me.

I hated Eddie though, but I'm not sure a VO change would fix that.

Good article. I'm glad you show both sides of the story.

Never played Silent Hill 2, but this article was interesting as hell. Reminds me of the Raynor scenario. I hope Troy Baker didn't get screwed..

You know, I always thought the voice acting was pretty terrible in Silent Hill 2, and I still do, but I think that because of how... surreal and detached everyone sounds, it actually adds a bit of atmosphere to the game.

As for residuals... I think the VO actors should get them for at LEAST re-releases and shit.
