Out of Nowhere, Valkyria Chronicles Is Coming to PC

Sega's reviving the strategy cult classic for computers in the near future.

No Caption Provided

Nobody was really asking for Sega to port Valkyria Chronicles to PC, but the company's already on it.

The surprise port was announced on Twitter by Sega, and we're still waiting for specifics on where the it's headed (probably Steam) and when it's coming out (hopefully by the end of the year!). Sega promises we'll have all that soon.

Not a bad day for PC games, huh?

Awesome. Played through this game so many times, I'd love to do it again on a PC. Hope it's a good port with all DLC attached.

That was the level that made me quit the game. I'd always meant to go back, but unfortunately my PS3 save data was deleted, so I'd have to start all over again. Fun game, though.

Holy sh*t! That's all I got, really, other than the hope that they include the DLC in the Steam version, too.

I will surely be purchasing this on PC. I've only seen bits & pieces of it through streams. Looks really interesting.

And I give you permission to play this Patrick after you complete Demon's Souls & Persona 4 Golden :p.

One of the games I missed in the early PS3 days by not having one. I'll definitely pick it up on Steam if it goes there.

Awesome game totally hampered by the way it only rates you by how few turns you beat the scenario in. You could run a flawless scenario and never so much as get shot but you will get a shit rating if you run too many turns. Lose half your squad and do it in eight turns? A+++! Great job!

Six months too late to save me from buying a PS3 to play this game only to find out I really don't like it.

I bought this game from gamestop used after spending like 6 hours looking for it in town. I was so excited. I took it homea nd started playing it, and then realized, fuck I am playing a console game. I then turned it off after about 4 hours and played something on my PC. Unfortunately I Haven't played it since that moment. This was years ago. I really wanted to like the game.

Haha, I don't have quite the same experience as you, but I was in the same boat in wanting to like the game so badly, but I just wasn't able to.

For those of you who are interested in the game, USE SCOUTS. LEVEL SCOUTS. LOVE SCOUTS. They are so fucking ridiculously overpowered that it makes the game a complete cakewalk. Also be prepared to load a level just to see what the layout is and learn the stupid bullshit you have no way to counter the first time due to your lack of knowledge, and then play it again with the right units.

Game's fantastic! Just gotta get over my urge to throttle most of the main cast for making stupid decisions in the finale. Also wish they had a little more time for some of the minor characters but it's definitely worth picking up.

Holy shit after all these years of Steam page troll edits! Imagine the potential of mods for this game, I'm so excited!

I bought a PS3 just to play this and Demon's Souls, and years later they continue to endure as some of my favorite games ever.

Yeah, not like there was a petition for a while now to bring Sega ports to PC. Yup...nobody asked for it just like no one asked for Dark Souls 1.

there wasn't a huge enough deal made about it that i heard about it, at least. i don't think that exactly counts as tens of thousands clamoring for it.

@jaks: Yeah, the rating system really hurt the gameplay side for me. It really bummed me out that it discouraged smart tactical play over just making a bee-line through it with Scouts. If your exp rewards weren't directly tied to your rating I might not have cared, but being penalized for not doing that was lame.

Yeah cause none of the gaming press bothered to cover it. The petition broke 12,000 very quickly and even got the community team at Sega to tweet of their acknowledgement of the interest. If we agree that VC is an out of left-field announcement for the PC then its easy to conclude that the only reason its getting released is in large part due to the petition.

I have a copy of this for PS3 but still haven't gotten around to playing it. Depending on the price I might just wait for the PC version to get around the loading times. I remain annoyed that this is one of the few games on the PS3 without trophy support because they couldn't be bothered to go back and patch it in.

Dont waste your time, average gameplay and a shit story. Many better JRPGs and turn based strategy games for your money.

Um, that's actually the right course of action.

Even tweet to @patrickklepek on twitter if you prefer and let him know that there was a concerted effort from many fans. I saw it myself, and it's worth mentioning. This is in part thanks to all that showing there is an interest for it.

I don't remember it being insanely difficult. I was getting terrible mission ratings for the first half of the game and getting lots of characters killed but I was scraping through and didn't need to replay many missions. Maybe you actually are missing something, like leveling up the classes or upgrading your equipment? Or maybe you've just made poor decisions like leveling up snipers and engineers instead of troopers and scouts? I never used Orders but people generally consider them to be OP.

I'm about to dive into Valkyria Chronicles for the first time ever, I only have Valkyria Chronicles 2.

Do you urge me to play the first one before the second or is it ok to just dive into the second?

I thought the second game was kinda bad... So... I'd urge you to play the first game.

Didn't find an actual response to the question.

it doesn't really matter which you play first. In terms of gameplay and tactics the second is a little different from the first in that it splits the maps so the psp can handle them. That adds a different twist. There is also a really nifty class added that I hugely enjoyed playing. You will probably want to come back to the second game again after you played the first tho. Because, you know, you can play as Selvaria in 2 :)

Nice. I might buy it for an excuse to play again.

I like this game a lot... but I never did complete it. If I'm honest, I started getting a little annoyed by it. I feel the progression system discourages experimentation by over-rewarding rush tactics while punishing slow, careful, tactical play.

This is because your XP is mostly determined by how many turns it takes to win.
If you waste turns and keep getting D and C ranks and it becomes impossible to keep up with the campaign. At least not without grinding the same boring training maps for miniscule XP.

I ended up just deploying scouts and constantly running up to enemies and shooting them at point blank range. It wasn't the safest path to victory, but it felt like the only reliable way to S rank.

Allowing players to replay missions, or putting more XP value on skillful play rather than speed would make this one of my favorite tactical games of all time. Would love to see a mod to this effect.

@mason: The Hard EX and Challenge of the Edy Detachment DLC is much better in this regard. If you try to rush even a little bit you'll get demolished or fail the objective. They're all really well designed missions. Actually, Enter the Edy Detachment is too but it's integrated into the game differently so you don't gain XP or money from it. Unfortunately you need to be like level 17+ to have a chance at beating a Hard EX or CotED mission and you have to have a full understanding of the tactics and mechanics so it isn't something you can use in the early game to grind.
