Peter Moore's Guardian Tell-All

EA Sports president dishes on his time at Sega and Microsoft in an interesting multi-part interview.

Keith Stuart's been running pieces of a fascinating Peter Moore interview that he originally conducted for Esquire's October issue in the gaming blog over at guardian.co.uk. Moore is, of course, the President of EA Sports who previously served very public tours of duty at Microsoft and Sega.

The interview's being strung out over five days, so I'm waiting for it to come to some gigantic, revelatory conclusion on Friday. But that doesn't mean that the parts that've posted so far have been dull. Here's what's happened so far.

Part 1 - The interview kicks off with talk about Moore's transition into the video game business and covers the Dreamcast brand, including anecdotes about playing NBA 2K1 against Ice Cube over a phone line as the Dreamcast went online.

Part 2 - Moore discusses some of the challenges that come with working for a Japanese company like Sega, the transition from Dreamcast to a third-party, and how he got in at Microsoft and made an impact on the launch of the Xbox 360.

Part 3 - Things start to get a little grungy here, with Moore's comments on how Microsoft perceives the Xbox group and makes his views on Rare--at least at the time of games like Perfect Dark Zero and Viva Pinata--pretty clear with the quote "[Rare's] skillsets were from a different time and a different place and were not applicable in today's market."

Fascinating stuff so far, and there are still two days to go. But with tidbits like that strung throughout, it's going to need a pretty shocking conclusion. How about he rolls up his sleeve, revealing a tattoo that reads "Shocker! I'm secretly a woman!" or something?

It's actually very interesting to hear from someone who was really on the inside but isn't there any more (at least not with Sega and Microsoft) - he's very honest but still enthusiastic.  Fascinating to see why they stopped selling the original XBOX.

"There was a huge bet they made on the original Xbox, not to put in dial-up, just to put a broadband modem in there at a time when the great majority of people were still connecting via dial-up modem – it was a ballsy bet to say, ah we don't care about you, you're a bunch of luddites we're going to move on to the people who connect the real way."
Xbox Live is probably what triggered my conversion from dial-up to broadband.

I don't think Rare would be having any problems right now if Microsoft hadn't decided to buy them though. I mean, it's not like people don't want to play their games, just the people that want to play their games have a Wii not an XBOX 360. They would be filling a huge gap Wii has in their software lineup right now, and making very good money doing so.

I think Rare have been doing great things. I wish Nintendo had put them on lockdown. DK hasn't been the same since.

Good read, I really like these interviews you guys put up.

@albedos_shadow, I'd wait until after the launch of Nuts and Bolts to say Rare is irrelevant.

I absolutely agree with his comments about Rare. They are almost entirely irrelevant at this point, which is sad considering their great games in the past. Here's hoping for good things from Nuts and Bolts.

Good interview. I agree, XBLA is casual content for hardcore users.

On Sega:"they were still relying on arcade conversions when the rest of the world was playing GTA"

On Rare: "...
I think the industry had past Rare by...their skillsets were from a different time and a different place and were not applicable in today's market"

Two very good quotes to cite when people ask why Sega/Rare aren't as good as they once were. These companies are learning the hard way that the video game market has drastically changed in the past 10 years. Adapt or fade away.

Very good interview.

It's been interesting seeing how the gaming blogs have been pulling out a headline from each of those interviews.

Really interesting, I like specially how I only knew that Miyamoto existed before going to giantbomb and now I learn about all these developers and their experiences.
