My 360 just got dropped off by UPS about 2 hours ago, and is working fine and dandy again. Still getting used to the NXE, but so far I'm liking it. On a side note, anyone want a 1-month Live code? They sent me one and I don't really need it.

About Me
I'm an 18 year old gamer who owns pretty much every system and will play pretty much anything if it's good. I've been playing games since I was 4 and I just can't get enough. I'm a big collector of retro games and spend far too much of my income on the hobby.

Just don't play it in public.

Sometimes, a game comes along that is fun to play, and has a lot of replay value, but you just can't believe the premise. Elite Beat Agents is that game.

Based on the Japanese series Ouendan, EBA puts you in the shoes of one of the Elite Beat Agents, basically an elite force that helps fix people's problems through... wait for it... DANCING! Yeah, okay, it's pretty weird, but that's definitely a part of this game's charm. Just watching the Agents dance around on the bottom screen is enough to make you laugh. The top screen plays out the story of the person in trouble. These may be the highlight of the game. From the weather forecaster who blows away rainclouds (with the help of friendly forest animals, of course), to basically helping a French painter "get lucky", the stories are crazy. With all the gameplay on the bottom screen, you'll probably miss these the first time through, so it's a good thing the game has a replay option to watch your sessions over and over.

Gameplay-wise, EBA shows that simple is sometimes best. The basic gameplay consists of circles appearing onscreen. These circles have another circle which close in on them slowly. Your goal is to tap the circle as soon as the outer circle touches the inner circle. This may seem easy, but at times, there can be so many circles onscreen at once, you must be a master to get a perfect score. There are variations on this. Sometimes a path will appear onscreen, and you must trace it with your stylus. The other type of marker is a spin marker, which is pretty self-explanatory. The spin marker is pretty much my only problem with the gameplay, as it feels like a pretty useless aspect, and just succeeds in making you worry about breaking your stylus.

EBA is not an easy game. With 4 difficulty levels, though, the game never quite gets out of hand completely, raising your skill through making you repeat levels over and over as you fail.

The main problem I have with the game is it's soundtrack. It does fit the game perfectly, but it's just a little strange. Samplings include classic rock hits like "Highway Star" and "Jumping Jack Flash", but also throws in some oddities like "Material Girl" and "La La". This weird mix of songs makes the game a bit difficult to play in public, unless you want to be seen jamming to Ashlee Simpson on your DS.

EBA is definitely a must-have for any DS owner, and for any fan of rhythm games. Just make sure you've got some headphones for playing outdoors.

The first in a long line of great GBA stategy games.

I actually received Advance Wars by chance on one Christmas. My aunt and uncle have a tendency of buying me random GBA games without knowing what they are, and I recieved this with less than enthusiastic response. I mean, really, how good can a GBA strategy game really be? The answer: really, really good.

Advance Wars takes place in a world called Cosmo Land, and follows the story of 3 COs (basically generals) in the Orange Star Army, one of 5 opposing forces in a war that seemingly popped out of nowhere, with no reason. As the story progresses, the truth behind the real nature of the war is revealed, and the real villian is introduced, who is maybe the worst Darth Vader ripoff I've ever seen. The story isn't the main selling point here, but the characters are somewhat interesting, and you care what happens to them in the end.

Advance Wars' greatest strength lies in its excellently balanced gameplay. The battles take place on a typical square grid, varying in size from mission to mission. Controls are simple, with the A button selecting units and the B button deselecting options and showing enemy movement range. Attacking is simple, just move your unit into range and choose fire. Unit maufacture is also simple, with no multiple unit requirements or complicated tech trees. Just build a factory, airport, or seaport and pay for your new unit. The real beauty of the gameplay system is the perfectly balanced unit types. Each unit has 10 HP to begin with. The units work in sort of a rock/paper/scissors format. Tanks can decimate infantry units, fighter planes can knock bombers out of the sky, and armored infantry can take on recon units easily. Each unit has another unit it is weak against, and one it can dominate. This system makes for great strategic moments, and a real sense of accomplishment when you have a great strategic victory.

The game's difficulty isn't too bad, but it does take some planning to win some battles. At the end of each battle, you are given a letter grade rank and a number of coins which can be used to purchase extras. My only gripe with the entire game is the insane ratcheting up of difficulty in the last two missions of the campaign, which had me throwing my GBA against a wall in frustration. The final battle has you suddenly taking control of multiple armies, and I believe the game should give you some practice with this mechanic before throwing you into the hardest battle in the game with it.

The main campaign consists of 17 missions, with branching paths depending on which CO you choose to control in certain missions. Once you beat the main game, you can unlock the Advance Campaign, basically a Hard difficulty. While this may not seem like a huge number of maps, the real replayability comes into play outside the campaign. There is a War Room mode in which you can play 20 new maps against the computer. Then there's the multiplayer mode, which features over 100 maps to unlock with your coins from the Campaign and War Room. These are the real meat of the game, especially if you have someone else to play with.

If your GBA (or the GBA slot of your DS) is gathering dust and you're looking for a great gameplay experience for a (presumably) bargain price, you can't go wrong with Advance Wars.

A good distraction... if you're 10 years old.

Animal Crossing was one of the first games I bought for the Gamecube. With its premise of "The Sims... but with cute animals!", I was highly susceptible to its charms at the tender age of 11. Oh, how naive I was. The game holds up well for a month or two, but once you realize that there's not much substance underneath it all, it quickly loses its charm.

The premise of the very minimal story is that you, a human character that can be either male or female, have moved away from home and taken up residence in the town of Animal Crossing (though you can name the town whatever you want). You mortgage your house, which is basically the size of a box with a bed and a radio, from the cute racoon shopowner, Tom Nook. Don't let his cuddliness fool you, though. This little creature will be the source of much of your pain in Animal Crossing, due to him being more greedy than a Mafia loanshark. Seriously, this guy is evil. Many a time have I wished to bash his little racoon face in with a shovel... sorry about that. Moving on...

So the main goal of the game is to upgrade your pitiful shack into a sprawling, 2-story manor. This is done through paying off your mortgage to Nook by earning bells, the game's currency. You can take a part-time job at Nook's store, which upgrades throughout the game as well, or take time to go fishing or bug-catching. As you pay off your enormous debt, your house is automatically upgraded, earning a basement and a second floor. This is probably the part of the game that will keep you motivated for the first month or so, as the house is infinitely customizable. I personally used the second floor as an NES shrine, as you can unlock classic NES games to play in your house. This is actually a pretty cool feature, as there's some pretty cool games like Excitebike and Clu Clu Land. There's some other diversions, like designing your own clothes and washing cars, but they're not enough to keep you occupied.

However, the same reason you'll probably keep playing the game is the same reason you'll eventually become incredibly bored with Animal Crossing. The sheer tediousness of the game is mind-boggling. Let's outline a typical day in AC:

1: Go see Nook for a job.

2: Go talk to an annoying animal to recieve a fetch-quest!

3: Fish.

4: Catch bugs.

5: Design clothes.

6: Fall asleep with your Gamecube controller still in your hands.

It's not that the mechanics of the game are broken in any way, it's just that there's not a lot of them. After playing for a couple months, I hadn't played this game in years until recently. I picked it up just to see what it was like today, and honestly, for a game that's supposedly so real-time and realistic, nothing much had changed, besides my house basically going to hell with cockroaches.

If you're looking for a game to introduce a child to gaming, Animal Crossing is a pretty good choice. Just don't expect it to last for more than a couple months.

A missed opportunity, but great nonetheless.

Back in 1999, Sega released the Sega Dreamcast, a quality system which eventually ended in failure. At the Dreamcast's launch, EA Sports declined to release the Madden franchise on the console, prompting Sega to find another football franchise to fill this gap. NFL 2K was the football series to take Madens place, and it performed excellently. The series continued in yearly installments, eventually gaining an ESPN license and moving onto the Xbox and PS2. Unfortunately, in 2004, EA signed an exclusivity agreement with the NFL, effectively shutting out all competition from 2K Football. The franchise disappeared for several years, only to be ressurrected with All-Pro Football 2K8. The series still has some serious fight left in it, but there are a couple glaring omissions that keep the game from reaching the heights of its predecessors.

Since the NFL is now off-limits for everyone but Madden, 2K Sports decided to go with a more inventive solution. The game's roster is made up entirely of former NFL players, mostly Hall-of-Famers. This means you can finally assemble your dream football squad. Want to go for an all-out assault with Dan Marino and Barry Sanders? How about the epic team-up of Bubby Brister and Yancey Thigpen? Go ahead. All 240 legends in the game are ranked as either a Gold, Silver, or Bronze star player. At the beginning of the game, you choose 2 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze players. While an average football fan should recognize all of the Gold players and most of the Silvers, once you move into the Bronze tier, you'll start scratching your head. Any open positions left after your draft are filled by randomly generated players who do a decent job carrying out their roles.

Once you move past the draft, the serious downfall of 2K8 is revealed. After naming your ridiculous made up team, you are presented with only four game types - Quick Play, Season, Practice, and an Online Match. For whatever reason, 2K Sports decided not to include a franchise mode in the game. despite the fact that ESPN NFL 2K5, the last 2K football game before this, did include it. This omission severely limits the replayability of the game, as after you beat Season mode once, you most likely won't do anything else but play online.

Fortunately, the game shines in its most important area: gameplay. Simply put, this is the most realistic football game you will ever play. Every play and every formation you could want is included. Every player handles realistically, as opposed to the ice-skating running backs and ball-magnet recievers of Madden. The only detail that seems to plague all football games, what I like to call velcro tackles, still plague this game too. Whenever any player makes a tackle, they seemingly home in on their target and attach themselves instantly, like some strange adhesive is holding them to their opponent. Luckily the rest of the game overshadows this small problem.

If you're sick of Madden's recycled games every year, and are looking for a new football game fix, do not pass up All-Pro 2K8. And if you were ever a fan of the series in the past, by all means, buy this game now. It's a worthy, though not perfect, continuation of the series.
