Phantasy Star Online 2 Coming in 2013

Sega's latest online RPG to get an official North American and European release.

Well that didn't take long. Actually, maybe it's taking too long, depending on which side of the announcement you look at. After a brief open beta and a full-scale rollout in Japan last week, Sega has announced that its free-to-play action-RPG, Phantasy Star Online 2, will be coming to North America and Europe in 2013. That's the part that might be taking a bit too long.

In case you haven't seen any of the video we've been running, it's been relatively easy to get into the Japanese version of the game, despite the language barrier. In fact, it's starting to seem like foreigners are absolutely flooding Sega's servers, as the agreed-upon servers and lobbies where English-speakers congregate seem to be getting absolutely packed. This has led to a bit of server maintenance as Sega attempts to rejigger the ship and block system a bit to take some of the rush off. Of course, it's not just English speakers that are filling up the game. The first five ships (servers, or "shards" if you want to be a jerk about it) aren't accepting any new character creation, though that's said to be a temporary restriction. Generally speaking, the game's servers have been holding up pretty well under the load.

It'll be interesting to see how Sega handles the English-language version of the game. Will North American players have access to the Japanese servers? Or will they be split off? If they're split, will that lead to a situation where new content debuts first on the Japanese servers and then eventually trickles over to the English servers? The PSO franchise has sort of a spotty past when it comes to bringing all of its Japanese content over to the other servers, after all. Will the slightly-higher-than-they-should-be prices of items and character creation passes see any adjustments when they leave Japan? Will I be able to continue to use the RAcast that I've already put 40 hours into, or is he stuck on the Japanese servers forever? That's the sort of stuff I'm left wondering about, but these are questions Sega probably won't be prepared to answer until it gets a little bit closer to launch.

It's also worth noting that Sega's announcement only covers the PC version of the game. Some form of the game is also scheduled to appear on Vita, iPhone, and Android.

I can't believe Jeff has put 40 hours into a game he can't even read.

I'm more curious about the mobile versions of this game, honestly. Are there going to be different versions for the iPhone/Android, Vita, and PC? If the Vita version can come anywhere near the PC version, it could be a huge selling point for a Vita, especially the 3G version. Online handheld gaming could reach a new level of refinement!

They could just localize it like in the old days, with english text and japanese voice. To be honest, that's probably what I'd want anyway. Think a lot of people would be happy with that solution, and at that point they only really need to translate the UI and text. I'm okay with playing on the japanese servers as well. Makes no real difference when you're in the EU anyway.

I'm totally in, loved PSO back in the day and this game seems to recapture what I loved about it. Hope they allow EU players to play with US, want to jump on Jeff's server when this comes out in 2013

Way too long. I'm interested in this game right now. Next year.. who knows. Probably not PSO2, though.

I'm in there Sega! I'm going to get a new laptop just to play this game. Unless it's released on a console, in which case that is the way I'm going (even if it will require buying a Wii U). It just feels right playing this with a controller on a tv.

I completely agree - this seems like a really long wait for translation. I'm hoping for an official or unofficial English patch.

I will definitely be playing PSO2 when it comes to the US. I would play on the Japanese server, but it isn't really worth the hassle for me. I just hope that the NA servers can support themselves, and actually get content updates.

All the coverage you guys have been doing on this import beta smash hit has given me a bad case of Phantasy Phever. The original PSO for Dreamcast was one of the most insane console experiences of all time and even made me buy a keyboard. I think the challenge of the game completely broke once I had a Spread Needle. I'm somewhat more intrigued if melee combat has improved since all of your footage contains mainly gun play. Now I desperately want to own and play this game but I fear my PC is not up to snuff. If anything you guys will do even MORE coverage when it gets its release next year though you might be sick of it by then. Please keep us informed with future developments.

@nomtank: I don't mean to be a negative nancy, but I'm almost totally sure you won't be able to play online over the 3G connection. The Vita version likely will be the same as the PC, though. Probably not a system seller, unfortunately.

@Blind_Evil: That's a shame about the 3G but I understand why that wouldn't happen. I'd just be hyped it the Vita and PC versions were the same.

Haha, I saw this was posted on July 9th, and was like "WHAT, news from one day in the future?"

Then I saw the year.
