PlayStation Plus Subscribers To Get Cloud Saves Tomorrow

Are you ready for the future? It's in the cloud!

PSN will be experiencing a whopping eleven hours of downtime starting earlier today, and for good reason: Sony’s very own Top Men are preparing the service for the arrival of that long-awaited--and once-fabled--PlayStation Plus feature, cloud-based saves.

Starting tomorrow, all  PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to get 150MBs worth of cloud space to spend on up to 1,000 save files. Even “copy-prohibited” save data will be supported with this new service. The catch is that save data can only “be restored once per 24-hour period.” Also, a PS blog posting mentions that "most," not all, games will be compatible with online saves.

No Caption Provided

== TEASER ==As you’d suspect, online storage will be accessed through the XMB once you've updated to the latest firmware that this feature comes bundled with. Also, you’ll be able to monitor how much data you’ve got in the air via a feature in the updated info bar.

If you want this feature, you’ll need to cough up the $50 dollars for a yearly subscription, or the $18 for a three-month subscription. PSN Plus will also give you “exclusive” access to demos and (arguably its most standout feature) free game downloads.

Anyone eager to save their stuff in the cloud?

PS+ is pretty great. The scary part was signing up for unknown benefits.

meh... why would i care two shits about this?  I only play on one console - if i'm too lazy to backup my saves and i lose them... shame on me.  And if I run out of space... at least i'll keep my 50 bucks to put toward a larger hd.

Now that sounds like a great feature.  Would love it if Microsoft did it as well for Xbox 360.

Great timing. I think my current PS3 might be on its way out, the picture on it is getting quite flickery.

Also, this is a nice feature if you want to show off your stuff on, say, Dragon Age II at a friend's house.

I wasn't trying to rip on it. I think PSN+ is way better deal than XBL (though I don't think either is worth the money for me), but I just don't see this as a big new feature. I guess any value added is good, but I just don't see this being useful for that many people. I was just surprised to see people saying that they might consider PSN+ now, when this seems like this feature would only be useful for a very small percentage of PS3 users out there.

And the second I stop paying for playstation plus I will never get the saved games off the server so using it as a backup is almost pointless. only thing worth it the  copy-prohibited” save data but that is just because sony wants to be a bastard and not let you copy it to something there is no reason.

No thanks sony I will stick with backing them up on  memory sticks  and putting them in fire proof metal safes that I already got stuffed with Corsair survivor usb sticks for important data is plenty good enough only a war or bomb could ruin my data in that thing and even then I don't thik it w ould get through unless the bomb was right on it.

Cool IDEA that you stole from steam... but I dont have to pay  for steam to let me use the cloud save and they have better service and servers than sony or xbox live and it's all free.

Xbox live should get it then It might making paying for xbox live worth something since all they give you is console noob peer to peer networking connections and no  dedicated servers but people like to get ripped off and pay for nothing bcause they have no idea what is really going on behind the curtains.

Wow... just lost my ME2 files when my system shut down after locking up saving and then this gets announced.  At least I have a nice cautionary tale to remind me to put that stuff on the cloud often until I start getting lax about it like I probably will.

Still, for those talking about Steam doing this for free, does Xbox Live do this if you pay for it?  Just talking apples to apples here...

This isn't really a big deal to me as I'd rather just put them on a USB stick and not have to worry about a 24hr time period, but it's good for those who want it I guess. I would just rather have them on hand than on Sony servers which could be down or inaccessible randomly.

I don't think copy protected save data will go onto a USB.

Hell yes.  Good thing I got DA2 on PC.  I'll just play that till this is all over.  Also it snowed a shit load here in Ottawa, so I should probably shovel that at some point...Or i'll just play some Dragon Age.  Yeah probably that second one.

I already have PSN+, and while this isn't a huge deal, I do like what Sony has been doing.  Basically PSN+ is only useful if you'd be buying most if not all of your downloadable games through PSN.  I've already made my money back in free games that i actually want to play.  Plus there's always good deals.  It's like if Steam was always having sales on.  Plus there was that thing that just happened where you can vote for which games you wanted to get a discount for.  All in all i say it was a $50 well spent.

not subscribing.   i have a whopping 640GB hdd in my ps3 and already pay good money for online backup for my PC, which is more important anyways since it has things other then games on it.  you have to have a lot of money or just be ultra hardcore about your gaming to go for this.

Steam DOES always have sales on. Go to steampowered.com right now, you'll see they have 9 things on special and it's just a random Thursday.

As a 35 year old gamer who owns pretty much every curreny system, I grow more confused daily by the PS3. While I love Uncharted, Flower, and look immensely forward to The Last Guardian, there is almost nothing at all that  like about my PS3 as a console platform.

I dislike the controllers form and forced recharging, the XMB, the "me too" achievment system, the inability to chat with friends, the non-intuitive way you have to do most anything. The network, the store design, Home, the forced long updates, the long install of every retail game.

Rather than improve these problems, P+ paid members get demos and 'cloud saves'. These are the least needed upgrades I can imagine for the average gamer.

Am I completely alone in this? I'm surprised at how positively received this addition seems to be, I expected pages full of negative comments as I read this article.

A lot of people prefer the Sony controller. Why you wouldn't want a rechargeable controller I have no idea, they also cost less than 360 controllers.
The XMB is hit and miss I'll give you that but you can't put down anyone for implementing an achievement system. Steam did it, Sony did it, Windows, Apple iOS. And if they didn't you'd be bitching that they should.
The store design works well.
Home is stupid; but they really put an effort to make an interactive community in which to meet up and play games with old and new faces.
Updates and patches are necessary and unfortunately slow.
Not all games need to be installed, or have long install processes.

Chat is needed but Cloud saves are awesome. They are awesome on Steam too.

Wow PSN beat Xbox Live to it!  I would definitely get a PS3 if it wasn't for that controller...  I just can't stand the short grips, the mushy triggers, and the super loose thumbsticks!

Awesome that PSN Plus subscribers get that feature though because then that puts a fire under Microsoft to hurry up and implement it's resources on features actually worthwhile and not in stuff like Twitter or Facebook or Avatar Kinect -_-'

Hmmm, correct me if I'm wrong (and I may well be) but if my PS3 Fat dies, could I not just take the SATA HDD out and put it in a new PS3, keeping all my saves etc? Maybe I have it wrong, but I am conscious my PS3 Fat is starting to rev up to danger fan at the first sign of slightly mild weather.

Stoked for this, I can finally move my Demon's Souls and RE5 saves between my 2 PS3s!

See several posts in here from people that consistently dump on Sony and the PS3 in the forums tho saying this isn't a big deal.  It's pretty awesome if you want a simple way to move saves between systems or if you have valuable save files and your PS3 or PS3 HD dies.

not trying to come off as a 360 fanboy(own all three), but this seems like one of those things where sony is going to offer this only to PS+ members, and then the xbox360 is going to fucking jump in and offer it to everybody just to devistate the sony market. :/

i hope it doesn't happen, but it's kind of stupid to only offer this functionality to PS+ members(even if it is only temporary) as it leaves microsoft open to make a move to overcome sony.

I'm pretty sure if you do that the new PS3 will reformat your drive when you first put it in.  Anyone have confirmation on that?

Yes. For the reason that everything you said you hated, I love. I find the PS3 system a better system then my 360.
