Rise of the Tomb Raider Now Exclusive to Xbox One

Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Interactive, and Microsoft have just partnered up.

When Rise of the Tomb Raider arrives in holiday 2015, it's only coming to Xbox One. It's now an exclusive.

No Caption Provided

It would have been natural to assume Rise of the Tomb Raider, announced at E3, would be available on multiple platforms. Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Not long ago, the studio also produced Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But something changed, and now it's only for Microsoft's console.

Tomb Raider was seen, at first, as a sales disappointment, though it ended up profitable. Is it possible Eidos was seeking a partner to better ensure the sequel's potential? Hard to say, and we may never know the true story. It's hard to imagine Rise of the Tomb Raider was never in development on PS4.

Crystal Dynamics released a blog discussing the news today, which I'll reprint in full:

"Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

Crystal Dynamics Head of Studios"

Am I the only one kind of bummed out by this news because I associate Tomb Raider with Playstation?

nah I think this is where a lot of the bummed out feeling comes from. Reminds of when Final Fantasy jumped from Nintendo to Playstation, except there were legitimate reasons there..

@chris_hall said:

@lunnington: [...] with the whole Ryse coming to PC and Dead Rising 3 as well it wouldn't surprise me and I actually expect it to definitely come to PC [...]

Yeah seems a foregone conclusion this comes to PC, only makes the pill all the more bitter for PS4 owners. I mean yeah maybe it does come to PS4 but based on tweets, etc seems it really is true blue exclue.

@meatballsaid:
I hope all of this doesn't result in some kind of 3rd party exclusive bidding war between MS and Sony. I thought we no longer really had to deal with this sort of thing.

Unfortunately I don't think Sony has the cash to throw around... Would be a pretty one-sided bidding war. Which is maybe what we're in for anyways!

Weird to see Eidos mentioned in 2014. Did you mean Square-Enix?

MS should use their bribe money to fund more first party development instead.

Wow, this is just pathetic, saying Tomb Raider always had a good relation on MS platforms, a franchise that mainly has been on Sony's consoles.

Microsoft have actually been chasing Tomb Raider for some time now. Exclusive DLC for Underworld, timed exclusivity for Guardian of Light, reboot reveal on MS stage and timed exclusive DLC. Guess they finally got what they really wanted.

Dumbest thing I have read all day. You wont play a potentially great game because it's exclusive to a console you own? It's a similar situation with Bloodborne being PS4 exclusive when previous games(Demon Souls) were on 360 and PC.

Bloodborne is a Sony game. Funded, produced, co-developed and owned by Sony. This Tomb Raider is a Square Enix game that Microsoft is paying them not to release on other platforms.

I don't understand the people saying they own an XBox / both consoles, but that they won't get this game now on principle. I've never seen a reaction like this to exclusivity. What is going on here?

Probably cause the original was released for all platforms and now they are forcing the fans to get it on in Xbox one rather then give them the choice like they originally had.

Demons Souls was a PS3 exclusive Bloodbourne is a new IP. Both owned by Sony. Your argument is invalid.

As someone who played TR on the PS3 when it was free on Plus a couple months ago... Uncharted 2 is still a waaay better game, 4 years down the line. Even U3, which kinda sucked in comparison, is probably still better than TR. Nothing of real value was lost as far as I'm concerned. But it does seem like another nail in the coffin in the Square/Sony relationship, with Final Fantasy going multiplat first, and now Tomb Raider, a former Playstation exclusive in all but name, now going to the other side.

How is making a new IP console exclusive the same thing as making the direct sequel to a multi platform game exclusive?

@dallas_raines: this is a really silly thought exercise and isn't really true anyway. You'd have about the same amount of people glad they can still play it, others who aren't happy to see this sort of exclusivity deal struck regardless of what platform they own and plenty of people who don't own the platform disappointed that it's not coming their way/they have to wait. Probably the biggest difference would be that people wouldn't be quite so bothered because at least the PS4 is the more powerful system, but even so, people would be upset either way and when people are upset you hear a lot more of that than when they're not.

If they considered Tomb Raider a failure in respect to copies sold, how is limiting its sequel's release going to help it fair any better? And on the console that's under performing! This is probably just a timed exclusive, but how fucking bizarre.

I saw that tweet this morning and thought it was some sort of jab about the similarities of Tomb Raider and Uncharted. Having a, barely, successful game's (in Square Enix's eyes) sequel become exclusive to one console, that is selling the worst of the three (I'm counting PC) doesn't seem like a smart business move. Unless the amount MS is paying SE to have this title be exclusive will somehow offset the lose of PS4 and PC sales (which I find unlikely).

Honestly, my knee-jerk reaction would be that. If this were a PS4 exclusive, it would reinforce my opinion that I made the right choice switching console allegiance this year. Now that I am missing out on this release, it certainly gives me perspective. Console exclusivity just burns the gamer, and benefits the company propping it up :/

The reaction to this as not been a great advertisement for Microsoft let alone for Square Enix, I don't think console exclusives work as well as they once did and this feels... dirty for some reason.

I wish Microsoft would spend the money they spent to get Tomb Raider on first party studios to be honest. I do tend to agree with peoples opinion that the reason Microsoft have picked this up is to complete with Uncharted... that makes some sense I guess.

So, let me get this straight...the game totally underperforms on every system it was originally released on (PC, PS3, 360). Then, because its a "smart move" they put it on the system that's selling the least amount of systems and they make it, at least, a timed exclusive?

Square Enix proving to the world why they are in such financial dire straits.

this totally sucks. tomb raider was my favorite game of the year it came out. dont think im ready to get an xbox for just one game.

also screw Crystal D for choosing money over gamers.

Guess this means I won't be playing the new Tomb Raider. I liked the previous game a whole bunch, but it's not a reason to buy an XB1. Disappointing in this day and age to see Square and Microsoft willing to build a deal just to screw over PS4/PC users. Funding a new game as an exclusive is great for your users. Buying out a game that otherwise would have been multiplatform is just an anti-competitive fuck you to everyone.

And if the sales before were "disappointing" it's going to be fun to see how Square reacts to sales now. Hope they got seriously paid off, otherwise the promising reboot could be dead in the water.

I wrote this in the other thread...

People forget one tiny thing when they say "third party exclusives make sense": The issue is that they could have taken the money they gave the producers from Square-Enix to make another game instead and still have this game as well. Forget PS4 or PC, their could have been another game on the XBox One!

This has always been the problem with paying for third party exclusives. It is destructive because the vendor is throwing money at the ISP. They have essentially increased costs while we the buyer and gamer are getting less game/product.

I don't mind companies making money but the net effect of spending more money and making less games seems like a bad trend or strategy no matter what platform you like.

So even after Titanfall being an Xbox exclusive, and not selling all that well, and Dead Rising 3 being an Xbox exclusive, and not selling all that well-Crystal Dynamics is like "Yeah, we wanna get involved in that too!"

Both EA and Capcom have all but admitted that being exclusive to XBox was a bad idea. There's shortsightedness and then there's just being freakin' blind!

This definitely secures marketing funds for this game as I'm sure Microsoft will market the hell out of it. Good on them for seeking out games and making deals. I guess people are bummed who enjoy it on ps4 and don't want/can't get a 1 and if this news was the other way around as in exclusive to ps4 the hate would be the other way around.

It's good to see Microsoft coming back to really compete. They're making the right moves for sure.

I'm sure this will eventually get a PS4 release, I sure hope so anyway. It's telling though. To switch to a platform exclusive mid-way into a trilogy must have cost MS a fortune. Why stoop to such levels if you believe in your own lineup? How many people will actually go out and buy an xbox for part tomb of the new Tomb Raider arc?

So...basically what Sony did with No Man's Sky? This will probably come to PC at some point like DR3 and Rise at the very least.

I'm fine with this, as it means it is only going to be developed for a current-gen system. Sure, PC and PS4 fans are going to be considerably disappointed, but this isn't the first time games have become exclusive to various platforms. It's part of the business, and I'm happy the developers get to focus on a single console. I bet they love that bit. Multi-platform development is a huge pain in the ass.

In a way, console exclusivity does give a game more attention (like in this case, even if it's negative). Also, it usually comes with a much larger marketing budget (subsidized by Microsoft).

The playerbase will be smaller, but it might get more attention. It's a theory, and it has worked in some cases, but it's risky and I don't think it's good for them in this instance.

Unless this is not just a timed exclusive then I don't know why people are upset, seems like a win-win. MS gets a game when they are way behind on sales that might help to fix that problem at least a little and Square gets a bunch of money for doing nothing and can still make more money later when the release it on PS4/PC. And honestly if people cared enough about the game then they would buy and XB1 for it, if not then they should be able to stand to wait 6-9 months to play it

I think the backlash over this is getting a bit out of hand, but these really aren't the same thing. No Man's Sky has been confirmed to come to PC and it'll almost certainly make its way to Xbox One eventually. It isn't clear that the same is true for Tomb Raider. Besides, console exclusively makes way more sense for an indie title than it does for one from a major studio, given how much more resource-strained small teams are.

Its a bit different. One no man sky is from an indie developer. That money most likely was needed to help pay for development. Also for tomb raider they announced it for everything and then basically changed that when money was thrown at them.

its not a completely invalid point though. an exclusive is not a problem if you own the console its exclusive on.
