Rise of the Tomb Raider Now Exclusive to Xbox One

Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Interactive, and Microsoft have just partnered up.

When Rise of the Tomb Raider arrives in holiday 2015, it's only coming to Xbox One. It's now an exclusive.

No Caption Provided

It would have been natural to assume Rise of the Tomb Raider, announced at E3, would be available on multiple platforms. Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Not long ago, the studio also produced Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. But something changed, and now it's only for Microsoft's console.

Tomb Raider was seen, at first, as a sales disappointment, though it ended up profitable. Is it possible Eidos was seeking a partner to better ensure the sequel's potential? Hard to say, and we may never know the true story. It's hard to imagine Rise of the Tomb Raider was never in development on PS4.

Crystal Dynamics released a blog discussing the news today, which I'll reprint in full:

"Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

Crystal Dynamics Head of Studios"

The reboot was my favorite game of last year. Too bad I have to wait until next holiday to play this one. Exclusives can be a bummer. I'd really like to play Bayonetta 2 and Uncharted 4, but I'm not buying a console for just a game or two.

If they thought they could have made more money by releasing it on all consoles, they would have. MS must have offered them more money.

@fattony12000: I am baffled that they would think something like that was acceptable and not delete it instantly.

Maybe it's some kind of MGS2-esque ARG.

Shout outs to Sony for being super transparent about their "exclusivity" language during their conference.

I feel as though this thread is doomed to do nothing but repeat itself for all eternity, like a nightmare that never ends.

Pretty much exactly as most people though, expect an ultimate edition 9 months down the line.

For fucks sake, it took them long enough.

No kidding. I'm baffled that they would be so cagey when asked directly if it was timed. It's like offering a bottle of water to a thirsty man, have him reject it again and again, then have him ask for the bottle after drinking it yourself.

I hope all this bad PR was worth it, Microsoft and Crystal Dynamics.

What did Microsoft think was going to happen ? Did they actually think people would be pleased? It's quite bizarre.

All it's done is generate negativity, and now they look like weasels trying to con you with their dodgy PR wording to boot.

@shinjin977: They absolutely do not. Your comparison is also not even close to the same thing. That's a retail environment with sales associates whose job is to describe products. Not a legal agreement and a corporation. They don't owe any consumer a thing. Consumers like to think the companies do, but they don't. In fact, they could never announce another game or partnership again and just throw games on the shelves. It's stupid and goes against marketing, but they could. THEY OWE US NOTHING. It's business. And guess what? it's a two way street. You have no obligation to buy their system and don't owe them anything either.

I get the annoyance, but all across the internet the rage is causing people to quit thinking rationally. That and a severe year old disposition towards Microsoft as it is. We always act as though these companies have to tell us everything going on right away or they're evil. But they're large, publicly traded companies with a Board of Directors and shareholders. Those people are owed explanations about legal agreements. We just get whatever crap they decide to filter down.

And like @ungodly said, this is all ridiculous. It's not the first nor will it be the last time this has happened. I believe I read lots of threads (not necessarily here) during E3 all about how people weren't super hyped for RTTR really and that there was a large portion of people who disliked the new direction CD is going in. But now, the whole internet is exploding over an exclusivity deal? It's just one game. Plenty of stuff to play besides that.

TL;DR - We aren't owed a thing, and you don't owe them your money.

Dumbest thing I have read all day. You wont play a potentially great game because it's exclusive to a console you own? It's a similar situation with Bloodborne being PS4 exclusive when previous games(Demon Souls) were on 360 and PC.

How is making a new IP console exclusive the same thing as making the direct sequel to a multi platform game exclusive?

Bloodborne is practically a sequel to demon souls. It has almost everything in common with it. My example is not a one to one comparison, but is an exclusive people could be mad about in the same way.

No its not, this example/argument is invalid. Sony owns the IP of Bloodbourne. Just like they own the IP of Demon's Souls. Its not even remotely the same thing. That would be like someone complaining about the new Halo not being on Playstation. Not even remotely the same thing. This would be like if CoD was all the sudden an exclusive to one console for a year. People would flip the fuck out about that also.

I actually meant Dark Souls. Forgive me since it is the same games as demon souls just like Bloodborne is. Even if you don't like my comparison it doesn't stop what you said previously from being idiotic. A console makers job is to try to entice people to buy that system by having either timed exclusives or exclusives. I own both consoles so don't mind it. You claimed to own both but refuse to play it because it might be exclusive.

I get console exclusives, I mean that's why there is more than one console out there right? But taking a game that's obviously going to run better and look better on PC and forcing it onto some console hardware is stupid. The first game looks great on PC, why would I buy a sequel that looks worse?

@sterling: @spraynardtatum:

Look all I meant was whenever there is an exclusive, timed or otherwise, the other side feels left out and let down. This is the exact reason to own 2 consoles. A better example is that I owned a Sega Saturn before the PlayStation. I played the first Tomb Raider on Saturn and the sequels only came out on PS and not Saturn. So then I went and got a PS.

Working at GameStop when Halo 4 was coming out, it was not uncommon to hear at least one person complain about it not coming to PlayStation 3 on a daily basis. I always get depressed when I think about those days... Time for some bourbon.

Well, talk about taking something with potential and completely screwing it over.

I can almost guarantee, without looking at any of the sales data or statistics, that the previous game became a success because of PC, Steam, and sales. Not because of the XBox 360. And even if it's timed it's still stupid. The only people that this hurts are gamers themselves.

Whatever. I liked the previous game even though some people hated on it. Even if this comes to PC I can tell you right now I'll be skipping it. Fuck 'em.

Looks like the exclusivity deal is a year for those who want to play it on PS4 but early 2016 for those who want to play it on Windows. Doesn't bother me much since I have both systems but man does it suck for those who played on PS4.

I buy so little on the Xbox One that this literally means nothing to me, a times it's just a 500 dollar paperweight. I hope it works out for Microsoft with this deal, but I suspect Square Enix will lose out on a lot of sales and Tomb Raider will be all but forgotten by the time holiday 2016 rolls around.

Cool, I'm glad it is early 2016 for PC. Also, Rise of the Tomb Raider is listed on the Nixxes website, the company that ported the reboot to PC in 2013, so hopefully the PC port of ROTTR doesn't turn out to be a mess like some other AAA PC ports.

EDIT: I was incorrect. Nixxes is working on the 360 port of ROTTR. You would assume that they will also do the PC version, but it isn't confirmed.

I can wait a few months for the PC version. Tomb Raider (2013) ran great on PC and I expect nothing less for Rise.
