Giant Bomb News

Ryan Davis, 1979 - 2013

Giant Bomb has suffered a profound loss.

Ryan Davis passed away on July 3rd. He was 34.

Obviously we’re all stunned over here. Ryan was a good friend to all of us. It’s odd to remember that, for someone who could be so acerbic at times, and despite knowing him for almost a decade, I honestly don’t recall ever actually being mad at him. He had an unconventional type of kindness that expressed itself more strongly the longer one knew him, and despite his teasing nature, he always managed to make his close friends feel loved when his attention turned towards you.

Many of you know that Ryan was recently married. In the face of this awfulness, many of us will at least always remember him as we last saw him: outrageously, uproariously happy, looking forward to his next adventure with the biggest grin his face could hold.

The consolation we can feel from that is miniscule compared to the hole that Ryan’s absence will leave in our lives. That’s not a hole that is possible to fill; it’s just something that we’ll just have to get used to walking around with, and that will not happen for a long, long time.

@warpig87: Yeah, I bet he would be excited about all the stuff that's going on.

I had a road trip last week for my vacation. I picked a random month of bombcasts (january 2012) to listen to. I LOVE going back and listening to the old shows, but I was still grossly unprepared for "Hey everyone it's Tuuuueeesday".

Finally worked my way through the In Memorium thread and closed it. I think about this man every single Monday/Tueday and get so bummed out.

Fan (Matthew Campin?) submitted a dedication to Ryan Davis in this Beer & Board Games Youtube show.

I've been listening to his last few podcasts. Man, he can never be replaced, brought so much energy to everything.

It's a lie. His half grown heart lives. He's not missed. He exists.

Found this health-related article from Huff Post that was issued a week after Ryan's death...seems like a likely scenario, and a sad one too considering he was seeking medical help for his sleep apnea.

Man, watching "best of" videos on YouTube just reminds me of how much I miss this guy. There's been so much loss this year for me...can't wait for 2013 to end!

He slept hard and is now well rested. I feel he lived above and beyond any sleep apnea.

I still miss Ryan everyday. I've had the Olly Moss picture of Ryan & Koffing as my phone's wallpaper since he passed away.

Sometimes I give him a big hug, cause he would have.

I actually had a cry again for Ryan the other day, and not much moves me like that.
Miss you Ryan!

Got kinda bummed out and decided to watch some old premium videos I'd never seen. Jeff and Ryan doing what they do together makes me laugh just about every time. I feel pretty fortunate that there are still hours and hours worth of Ryan content I've never seen before.

the site has finally imo been able to get that same energy level that it had with ryan. (like the load our last souls feature has been most evident of this)

but man does it still sting personally, like ryan was the assassins creed reviewer, and with 4 out this week i got kind of bummed out a bit.

Four months later, I still miss him.

Ryan is NARCing out Lou Reed now.

Miss that dude, so sad he couldn't be here for the console launches especially. He would have loved the chaos going along with it all.

Tearing up watching Brad play Hotline Miami wasn't something I ever expected to do but I just did. So, thanks for that, Ryan.

I came home early to see GB's reactions to the unveilinings of next gen stuff and Ryan was joking the whole time but looking super serious. Seems like a guy I would've liked to know

I've been listening to the bombcast backwards and every single episode I'm just blown away by how much joy Ryan had in him. Such a tremendous loss :( you are missed Ryan

Just started listening to the new Bombcast and it has the older intro and it reminded me of the old days. :(

Sometimes, for a split second, I'll forget that Ryan was a part of Giantbomb/The Bombcast/etc. At this point I've gotten used to the current crew. Then I remember him and the fact that he's never coming back and I'll get really fucking sad. Besides Jeff, Ryan was by far the coolest and funniest member of the Giantbomb crew. He was the type of guy that made you think "Man, I'd love to have a beer and hang out with him". I'll miss you duder. You had more of an impact on people than you ever knew.

I still miss you so very much, Ryan. I regret never getting to meet you, being the fantastic person I've always come to expect you to be, but I'm glad you were able to bring so much laughter and happiness to myself and others over the years you had with us.

Rest in peace.

It's hard to believe it's been 4 months.

Classic Ryan Throwback.

Still miss you, big guy.

There are times when it especially sucks that Ryan is no longer with us. The release of GTAV being one. The launch of the new consoles will be another. Super sad that he is gone.

The guys are starting to mention Ryan (if only briefly) on videos and stuff. And the podcast is getting a little bit of a post-Rich Hotspot vibe to it, which is pretty alright. Different than what Ryan aimed for, but very good in its own right.
