Skyrim PS3 Fixes Coming Eventually, Bethesda Offers Pro-Tips

Version 1.3 pushed to PC, but still not available on Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.

Both console versions of Skyrim have enough issues that it may be worth waiting a bit more.
Both console versions of Skyrim have enough issues that it may be worth waiting a bit more.

Bethesda Game Studios releases are certainly prone to weird issues, but the PlayStation 3 versions especially so. Users have reported serious performance issues with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim when playing for many hours at a time, prompting a response from the company.

Bethesda has started to acknowledge these PS3-specific reports are a problem, promising specific fixes in a patch coming after version 1.3, which is expected later this week.

“We’ve been reaching out to a number of those users to collect save games, so we can take a look at their specific issues,” said the company on its blog. “Right now we know it’s not one thing, but a combination of smaller ones that some folks are seeing, but others are not.”

Version 1.3 comes after version 1.2, which fixed some things and broke others, ala backwards dragons. It's up for PC now.

Knowing things will change eventually doesn’t really help PS3 owners right now, but the company did offer some temporary solutions that could alleviate the pain on its message boards, which I’ll quote in full below:

  • "Turn off auto saves. This can cause temporary stuttering since the PS3 saves these files in the background. This is most noticeable with large saves when fast traveling to a new area or entering a new area that auto saves.
  • Clear space on your hard drive. Skyrim makes heavy use of the hard drive, and freeing up space on here seems to help many people. Hard drive speeds also differ in PS3 models. Some users have reported increase performance by upgrading their drives.
  • Waiting for time to pass. Many things are running in the world depending on what quests you've done or places you have visited. Using Wait or Rest options, passing time will clear up some of these. It depends how long you wait, it may take up to 30 days for some items. Saving, resetting, and loading after this will have the largest effect."

The nature of the problems facing Skyrim on PS3 are understandably upsetting to users. Please report anything you’re running into within the comments, as I’ll be playing close attention.

Great story once again Patrick, you continue to bring the important news to the bomb shelter.

Regarding Skyrim I think I'm going to continue holding off even if the price tag has dropped to £22.50 at my local game retailer. I just can't justify any purchase of this game when there really is no guarantee it will ever run well on a ps3 and certainly not my ancient,no doubt slowly dying 40GB model.

While this game sounds incredible, considering it for game of the year was always going to be a dividing question. I think it comes down to what the whole point of game of the year is. I just wonder if this game were to be awarded GOTY within any category or by any media outlet would it be a disservice to us as gamers and the paying public. By accepting this as the best video games had to offer in 2011 surely we would be condoning the shipping of what many consider a broken game and would surely be encouraging this kind of development.

Then again to those who have played the game without completely game breaking issues they may well consider it the best game they've played over the twelve months. I personally feel however GOTY should represent all gamers and certain boxes must be ticked in order for a game to be considered, one of which would be that the game can be played through to the end. Perhaps an honourable mention is all it should receive when you hear some of the cautionary tales, F*** playing 60 hours of a game to find that's all she wrote. I mean she wrote more.

Except there the game crashes to desktop at completely random intervals around every 30-60 min. For me at least. Had the same problem with Fallout 3. Really destroying my interest in the game when I have to quick save every 5 seconds out of fear that the game will just CTD every time I walk around a corner or interact in anyway with the world.

I've had trouble with my PS3 version where on some quests, if I already have the item, the NPC won't recognize it. The problem is that I can't drop the item or trade it so I'm basically stuck.

Bethesda is a bunch of liars. All my friends are having issues with the game, except the people who just got it who are not far enough in to see anything. Bethesda is playing a image control 'game plan' now, not a 'let's fix this' game plan. All their blog posts just say, " stop asking us difficult questions because we cannot LIE, CHEAT AND STEAL any faster then we are right now....err we mean evaluate the minor issues some people might be having."

I've been playing on the PS3 and I'm about 50 to 60 hours or so into the game and I've only had a few lockups and the really noticeable glitch I've come across is that I stored a bunch of books in my shelves and they all disappeared. Just reloaded coming into the house in Whiterun and just put the books back again.

I guess my other issue is the lag that happens when you bring up your inventory. I guess I should count myself lucky and hopefully I haven't cursed myself into having these known PS3 glitches.

I've had 5 crashes in 100 hours, so the stability issues are NOT experienced by all users. Five. I specifically counted with roman numbers on a sheet of paper, to tick off every crash I got, and I think all five came from playing 10+ hours in one go. Five. GOTY. Stability is the least of my concern. I do want them to get started on the quest fixes though.

Finally decided to sell my ps3 copy back while it still has some value. The guy at the store said others were selling back their ps3 copies as well because of the issues. Will buy someday on a steam sale because its a great game but won't pay full price.

This patch has been awesome!

Playing Skyrim has been a mixed experience for me. I love the game, but crashes has practically prevented me from playing it. Since the patch I've been playing for almost three days non stop without a single issue. Hooray!

Now Skyrim for sure is gonna be GOTY!

The part about waiting/sleeping to make things reset - I've noticed that Ash piles never clear.  So if you are doing a lot of disintegrating and resurrecting corpses, that might turn into a memory problem on consoles.  They should patch those things so they don't stick around forever.

I accidentally downloaded the patch on the 360 and it has completely jacked up the game. Pre-patch I wasn't experiencing any of the problems that had been reported. Now the game is nearly unplayable. Glitching to the point that it freezes the xbox. Didnt have this issue until the patch. Cant get shout words from dragon walls. I have 70+ hours in the game and now I cant play. Pretty shitty

You have made a great point without trying to:

I am only renting the game. So I am okay with all this poop. In fact this has jumped in front of batman for my GOTY. If I paid for it and had more time to play it II would be insanely pissed.

hmmm, I hope that's a compliment. The bottom line is that when Patrick says on the podcast, "As long as you don't play it on the PS3" or whatever his exact words were, that's a pretty clear indication that Bethesda basically screwed the pooch on the PS3 version, and basically didn't put the consideration into making sure their game worked on that console, which is kind of a slap in the face to all the folks who want to play it on the PS3 and have to put up with this crap. If I were a frothing Bethesda fan and not somebody who was merely curious about this game, I imagine I would be more bent out of shape than I am. As it is I just have to twiddle my thumbs until they get their act together.

So in your world frequent patches equates to "expects us to just deal with it." Sounds reasonable.

Frequency of patches has nothing to do with expecting your customers to put up with buggy nonsense. They could patch it every day and it wouldn't make a difference if the game was still jacked up.

I don't doubt you, friend. I was more speaking of Skyrim in general and not specifically this version. I've been deep in the ES community for nearly a decade and know hundreds of people playing this game, not only as acquaintances on the internet, but people I see on an almost daily basis. In general performance hasn't been an issue for the majority of the people I speak with/see where Skyrim is concerned on both 360 and PC.

Again, for the few angry internet people who quoted me, I'm not speaking about the PS3 version specifically, just Skyrim in general.

I love how society is now, why concentrate on the positive when we can bitch and moan about the negatives. Never mind that they created superb scenery all over this gorgeous virtual world, never mind that you can pretty much do ANYTHING in the game world, never mind that there are some side quests that are as long and well executed as some main quests in other games, never mind that people complaining have been playing this game for now 40-50+ hours before the lag issues shows up, sure let's bitch that it lags a bit now and then or that 1 dragon you saw 3 saves ago was flying backwards...

How about for Elder Scrolls 6 they just make a side scroller with 3 levels, 1 boss and absolutely NO glitches! Would that appease you angry video game experts ?

Been playing on the PS3 for about 70h now, with a save file exceeding 10MB, but aside from two lock ups and some occasional framerate stutter and open world jank, everything's fine.

It's probably worth noting that my console (a rather new slim) hasn't been hooked up to the internet since before the launch, so I have no updates installed whatsoever (and might even be running on old firmware).

Weapon racks, wall mounts don't function for me at all. I can remove any existing items but that is all. Still have some lag as well. I'm sure there are more but I'm ~65 hours in and still have to finish the main quest. Oh and few (4ish) crashes when initially starting up the game and loading the last save.

I turned off the autosave when traveling and waiting and that made the experience a bit smoother.

I finally got all trophies for Skyrim PS3 version so I'll never have to play this dated broken game again! Good luck to all waiting for fixes but you'd be better off with the PC version if you like this game.

As for people crying over stupid GOTY awards, just make a youtube video and include the following line "game name here is my game of the year, and if you don't agree, you're stupid! Now I know that sounds harsh, but it's the truth".

Mage College quest where you put Warped Soul gem in Dwarven converter and cook it totally broken

Other Misc quests not removed from log when complete

Backwards dragons happened once. It was friggen sweet IMHO.

Standard lockups. Extreme slow down happens more quickly (within two hours).

Save file 11MB at this point all stuff stored in owned home.

Great art isn't about being 100% free of mistakes, its about the fantastic emotional high nothing else like it can bring to the table.

You're nothing more than a Bethesda apologist. If you can't see the glaring flaws in their methodology and consider them the "exception" to quality control standards, you're either willfully ignorant or a zealot. Either way, it's obviously useless talking to you.

No it doesn't at all. That's not what I meant. However in 1.2 when magic and therefore my conjured Atronach's resistances were nullified, I would accidentally kill my Flame Atronach with fireball blasts when they should be 100 percent resistant. That sucks.

Ah, now that's funny.

Hey, people bitching about how this game doesn't deserve to be spoken of as a GOTY contender because it's "so busted," I've got 85 hours into one character and 11 into another. Zero issues. 1 crash over the course nearly 100 hours of play, some of those hours being real marathon sessions.

When will people realize that the vocal minority on the internet doesn't reflect the experience that the majority of players are having? Also, dude who tried to compare the scope of SR3 to Skyrim needs to play more fucking games.

How can you have 1 crash, but zero issues? Anyways, you don't seem to get what people are saying. Skyrim is an incredible game, but it's not just a vocal minority that are complaining... Many people are facing this issue, so it's a widespread potentially game breaking bug that has been well documented. No one is arguing that it's a fun game, but a GOTY game needs to have polish along with all the other things it has going for it.

as a PS3 user I have had no issues. I have since deleted the patch and have, without suggestion, performed all of the above steps. I am grinding / power-leveling my character. I have completed the first quest, only because I am not able to leave Helgen otherwise. If anyone can help me, send me a message! Anyone else find that most of the glitches in the game seem purposeful?

Great art isn't about being 100% free of mistakes, its about the fantastic emotional high nothing else like it can bring to the table.

I think your in the wrong about the consumer complaining. It's a very complacent ( complasaint ;) ) attitude. Your sort of right about the software magic produced at Bethesda, although this isn't their first rodeo and it's definitely NOT a piece of work than can be considered avante garde. I also understand that it's difficult to fault Bethesda due to the nature of the beast regarding both project size and timelines. These RPG issues remind of me spending a long time installing the 19MB Darklands game on my 20 MB hard drive and then discovering what could/should of been the best RPG ever made is also the most buggy game in existence.
