Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp Dares Campers to Survive the Night

Gun Media's teaming with horror's Tom Savini and Harry Manfredini in a game of counselors vs. killer.

Friday the 13th and other slasher movies have always struck me as a goldmine for video games, but it's never really materialized into anything more than forgettable NES action games. Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp, a new series from Gun Media worshipping 80s horror films, might take us a step closer.

No Caption Provided

In Summer Camp, players take on the role of the 6-8 teen counselors...or the killer. Everything plays out from the third-person, and the goal is to survive--or kill, if you're the game's walking embodiment of death.

Some of the creative talent involved should excite genre fans, too. Horror effects master Tom Savini (Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow) is contributing to the design, and composer Harry Manfredini, responsible for Jason's iconic cha-cha-cha entrance theme, will be scoring the music.

"They've [Gun Media] done their homework, and they are very passionate about the soundscape of Summer Camp," said Manfredini in a press release. "After our first meeting, I was already brainstorming the main theme in my head. It’s going to be so much fun."

To get a sense of Summer Camp's tone, I'm happy to premiere the trailer. It doesn't show any gameplay, but it's clear the creatives understand what makes the 80s schlock they're pulling from tick. Sign me up!

Horror games usually give me the creeps but this sounds like a neat concept. @patrickklepek are there any gameplay videos yet?

I hope this turns out like I imagine. I've wanted a good 80s slasher game for so long, and the closest we've ever gotten was Manhunt.

Counsellor vs. Killer?

I wouldn't mind a Hannibal type of scenario.

Huh, weird to have this existing alongside Until Dawn, both of which are going after that 80s horror B-movie tone.

Also, yet another page created by the staff that hasn't even had any of the basic details filled in...

I've been hoping for some years that someone would pick up the Friday the 13th license and do just this. With the talent involved, I'll be ecstatic if this is as close as I get (and it's fun to play)

Agreed. This genre needs more video game love. I'm a big slasher fan and made a short film as an homage! Happy Halloween! http://youtu.be/NcnZJkC3m4w

I would associate Until Dawn more with the late-90s slashers. You know, the ones that tried to copy Scream without realizing that Scream was a parody.

Looks sweet! Especially since Until Dawn is a PS4 exclusive( a lot of horror games seem to be PS4 exclusives these days), but If i'm being honest I just want creative assembly to make a Friday the 13th game. Based on how many people loved Alien Isolation, I won't be surprised if that game kicked ass.

That being said, the game being based on the Slasher Genre already makes it a must have.

Im not saying Gun Media stole the idea. But Doublefine had the EXACT SAME pitch for one of their amnesia fortnight games. Wouldve love what DF would have done with thae idea.

The game Damned played like this but the monster could vanish and spawn right behind players. I'm curious how that will play out in Summer Camp. If the killer is just a dude walking around i feel like it would lose it's effectiveness.

It's what made the DoubleFine pitch so exciting and I'm glad someone has taken up the task of making it.

Tom Savini is a cool dude. I hope this game lives up to its pedigree.

The real problem I'm seeing here is that Tom Savini is a washed up hack nowadays that I would wager knows next to nothing about making video games. That said, the concept is really cool and I hope it's something worthwhile.

After a month-long glut of horror movies, both good and bad, this announcement is excellent news.

This is amazing. I used to think if there would ever be a game in where you would be the killer, or a monster stalking their prey in some camping place. I'm curious to see how they pull it off and not turn it into some lame boring hack and slash without any mind games or tension build up. That probably made me sound sadistic as hell.

Hey, awesome! Though I wasn't exactly complaining about the page being empty or anything if it seemed that way, but rather how the staff (besides Jeff) will so very often create pages and then leave it as is... Don't even bother inputting basic details such as platforms or themes. I see Jason and Vinny do that a lot too; they'll create a page for the sake of having somewhere to put this QL for some obscure steam game and that'll be that.

Frankly it's no wonder why so few people give a single shit about the wiki when the staff themselves don't have any to give.

True, but as long as they aren't creating repeats of the same pages (multiples of one particular game just for the sake of content dumps), it's not a bad thing. By them filling out nothing, it leaves the page wide open for us to get wiki points galore!

Sounds interesting. I'll be keeping an eye out for more info on this. I love horror survival games just as long as they're atmospheric, suspenseful, and immersive without mainly relying on gore & jump scares.

I grew up on slasher flicks in the late 80's and early nineties. I sincerely hope this pans out, I played the hell out of the Friday the 13th NES game!
