Sony Buys Sucker Punch, Stops 'Em From Pulling an Insomniac

It only seemed like a matter of time, anyway.

Whoa, bro, whoa.
Whoa, bro, whoa.

Sucker Punch and Insomniac Games were in similar places for a while, both producing games exclusively for Sony platforms without actually being a wholly owned entity of Sony.

Whereas Insomniac Games struck a deal with EA Partners to expand onto Xbox 360 with OverStrike, Sucker Punch is headed in the other direction. Sony announced it's purchasing the studio in the wee hours of this morning (or, if you're me, late at night).

No financial terms of the deal were disclosed, but this deal puts another solid studio (16 total!) under Sony's roof.

"We've enjoyed an incredible relationship with Sony that has allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms," said Sucker Punch managing partner Brian Flemingin the press release. "Equally important, the relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties."

Sucker Punch and Sony most recently collaborated on inFamous 2, released back in June.

Looking at this from both perspectives, BOTH Insomniac and Sucker Punch can benefit from their respective decisions.

It's good that they bought Sucker Punch, I believe that if you've been exclusive friends for that long then there should be a permanent partnership. I was always curious why Sony didn't purchase Insomniac since it's a real shame to lose them to multi- platform development. Maybe losing Insomniac was a wake up call for Sony to buy SP.

This is good for Sucker Punch, but I still hope for the best for the everyone at that studio. Every time I see one of these stories, I just think that years later we'll be seeing another story labeled: Company X has closed studio Y because the games they were told to make didn't sale like CoD! Now the people who made said games are out of the job while the big wigs that canned them are unaffected in any way.

I Bloody hate Sony, buying up all the franchises so all games become exclusive,

Some people don't have the money to own all the consoles, and get left out because they don't own 1 of the three

Bloody Sony

That made me laugh, because I know for a fact that that is exactly how it played out.

Kind of surprised they picked up Sucker Punch before Insomniac. Sucker Punch only has 2 games under their belt for the PS3, while Insomniac made about 4.5 for them. I am still surprised Insomniac went third party.

Being a first-party studio, this should give them more money and more time to iron out the wrinkles in their releases. I can't even fathom how incredible Infamous 2 would have been with some more QA testing.

If they can nix any future morality systems and tell a straight up focused narrative I think Sucker Punch can make a truly great game the likes of Uncharted. I'm really looking forward to it, we probably won't see it till PS4 though.

Never a good thing when major publishers gobble up studios. Though it may make business sense for Sony, I'm not going to applaud them for looking out for their corporate self-interest.

At best, gamers lose potential platform choice for future Sucker Punch games, Sucker Punch are unaffected by this purchase, and they get some extra marketing heft behind them. At worst, they lose creative/administrative control, or get dissolved.

Good luck to them - I enjoyed inFamous 2 - but I never like it when this happens. As Jeff said on the podcast - these kinds of acquisitions are always great for everyone... until they aren't. All it takes is one dud, one sales target not met, and you're potentially dust.

I'll never understand why gamers like and/or "applaud" these moves, unless you're a shareholder in the publisher involved.

- Scott

That sort of only really rings true when it comes to the super money hungry publishers.

Sony have shown that it's not necessarily all about the bottom line with their first party companies. Look at Team ICO, they've made 2 absolute classic titles that BOMBED at sales and yet they've kept them around and now they will have one of the more marketed and looked at titles coming in 2012 in The Last Guardian. Plus they'll also have people getting into their last 2 titles via the HD remake collections.

A company like EA or Activision purchasing a company can most definitely end badly, but it's also something for the developer to make sure they are churning out the absolute highest of quality titles you can get and then eventually the sales SHOULD start coming...even if they don't publishers will generally give them an extra chance with a bit more backing.

Exclusive games have a place as the developer behind the product can put all their creative powers behind the one platform, which offers plenty more room to move and bring out a far more polished product. We see developers spreading their 2 year dev cycles between 2 or 3 platforms while these guys only need to focus on the 1...and what generally ends up the better product? You got it, the exclusive.

@sins_of_mosin said:
Shame none of those first party devs made any good psp games.  Besides the mountain of JRPG junk.
Sony Bend?

Also for those wondering about Sucker Punch and new IP. They did state in an interview pre-inFAMOUS 2 release that they were indeed working on a new IP.

Quite a stark contrast in feeling when Sony buys a studio vs. when Microsoft does.  When Microsoft buys a studio, I feel genuinely concerned for the Studio's future, whereas with Sony I look forward to what direction the studio will go in.

What...? Sony had plenty of PSP exclusives, though a lot made by second-party devs (at least one of which they bought), and just about none of those were JRPGs. They also, on average, received relatively high review scores. If you don't like the PSP or Sony that's fine, you don't have to lie lie to get your point across.

It would have been awesome if they also owned Insomniac so that they'd have the whole trio of Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Sucker Punch.

Glad to see Sony finally buy Sucker Punch. They have been a solid studio since the PS2 days and it would have been a huge loss for them to go multiplatform like Insomniac. Now hopefully they start working on a new ip.

I just hope they use this opportunity to work on new IPs. I am sure they are talented people that can pull that off.
Also, I could live with the end of inFamous 2 being the official end of the story.

Good for Sucker Punch. Sony has a solid stable of first-party developers and I've never seen an instance where acquiring one has caused the quality or anything to go down. They do a pretty great job of supporting their devs.

@LordCmdrStryker: I'm sorry that some of us don't have a limitless time to sink into games straight away. Ever consider that some of us are working from a back catalog of games or don't have time to play games often. Or maybe some of us don't feel the necessity to play games day one. What a selfish ass.

@Kyle: Sucker Punch aren't developing the new Sly, it is the team that had a hand in the Sly HD trilogy.

I just hope Sucker Punch come out with a new IP rather than a new inFamous.

@LordCmdrStryker: You complete and utter twat. It's just common courtesy to spoiler tag spoilers (I mean the hint is in the title) no matter how old a game is; not everyone can play every single new release, and just because I'm not, like, a Portal obsessive who didn't rush out for it day one doesn't mean I wouldn't of played it eventually.
