Sony Reveals PlayStation 4 Pricing, Design

I think it's pretty telling that the biggest cheers of today came from Sony's used game (lack of) policy and their price. No actual GAME got a reaction anywhere close to this, and as far as console exclusives are concerned, I actually think Microsoft has the better lineup, or at least the lineup I'm more interested in.

Sony won the hearts and minds though, and VERY cleverly waited until after dropping the used games bomb to announce that multiplayer is no longer free on PSN. Shrewd as all hell.

I'm sure we'll only have these consoles for a year...and MS won't charge you Live for the many years after...

@dierunning: yep. and if they add the ability to play ps3 games in any form, itll be a definite purchase for me down the line. my xbox live doesnt expire until december 2014, so ill be getting my ps4 next holiday season prolly. Does anyone know if PSN is going to be pay only now for sure? I know it was mentioned, but I was wondering if anyone else heard anything conclusive? Either way im wayyyyy more interested in the ps4 than the xbox one right now. Both consoles do look pretty strange though I have to admit :P

Sony really knocked it out of the park with this. Also explains why EA is aligning itself with the Xbone, they can't be too happy about the used games thing (boohoo). Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do.

Sony absolutely killed it at this press conference!The only way they could have made it even better is if the presenter announced the price, dropped the mic and walked off the stage.

Ok Euro Prices include the 20% VAT. So do you pay that or not? If a EU citizen goes to the store and buys a PS4 it is going to cost them 399 Euros right? Which equals 529 Dollars. If an american goes to the store to buy a PS4 it is going to cost them 426 Dollars. A difference of 103 dollars.

Damn. I felt a lot of serious respect in the conference. Pretty sure the PS4's gonna be the next-gen console I buy this year.

Where were AAA games? Oh, well, I'll get both. Dead Rising looked so good. And, Titanfall too.

I think the takeaway is that people liked Sony's attitude in their advertising of the PS1 and PS2, and they're happy to see that no-nonsense approach again. It's not about being the only console, or the most well known. It's about showing you some cool new games, and that being plenty.

The Xbone will be fine, just like Steam is. People are just happy that Sony will remain relevant and won't be the second console this generation to falter terribly.

Being able to sell your games is pretty big. Though in the end, people will still chase their most wanted exclusives around. But it's highly unlikely Sony won't be the 3rd party game king. It's a shame Nintendo didn't beef up the Wii U more. I'm sure they will have some amazing games, but it doesn't seem like that year jump on the competition has really paid off so far.

I'm curious on how holiday sales will be. Would be completely shocked if MS outsold Sony despite the $100 difference.

Yes because Sony bucking the EVERYTHING DRM ALL THE TIME trend is good for consumers. You are a consumer so you should be thanking them. Whether or not you suck a dick about it is up to you of course.

Dont forget that Sony also is allowing used games to be playable without having to pay anything extra & that playstation users get to use things such as netflix / amazon prime without having to pay more then they already pay for the services? 40$ difference for multi + the already there benefits + free games on ps+. Gotta add the extra's otherwise people wont realize how fucked microsoft is at launch time this go around.

Wow...let me get this straight... The Playstation 4 is literally 50% more powerful than the Xbox 3 (err...one). It's $100 cheaper. AND it lets you actually own games for it and play 'em without daddy checking up on you?

Umm...I was completely torn this generation with which to standardize one...this coming gen? Never been an easier decision. Tard box indeed.

I'm going to end up buying both consoles - I actually really like both the PS3 and 360 - so I'm going into the new generation with goodwill towards all. That said - I really hope Microsoft can/will back away from current DRM - for their own sake. Eat humble pie and dive into whatever technical wizardry they need to in order to get rid of the online requirement and used game restriction b.s.

I preordered both, and had always planned on preordering both, but now I am conflicted as to what my main box will be.

In the current gen I played just about everything on the 360, just playing exclusives on the PS3. All of my friends are on 360 and I need to get those achievements (yeah, they are dumb, but I have a problem), but I do occasionally trade in games, so the prospect of being able to do that makes the PS4 appealing.

@flacracker: That's not how it works. You cannot compare prices that include a localized tax or otherwise you would have to include cost of living and other taxes to have things even out.

Therefore the comparison is always about the prices without tax.

@flacracker: All electronics pretty much get USD = EUR but the real difference is because the US price is without sales tax while the EU price is with VAT included if I understand correctly so it evens out a bit.

This Sony press release says the PS4 comes with a 500GB HDD :)

When the audience chants "Sony! Sony! Sony!" for keeping the status quo, and you're Microsoft, you might want to reconsider the sort of decisions you've been making.

@flacracker: The price isn't meant to be the same amount in each market. There are a lot more taxes and fees in Europe than there are in the US, and they need to account for that.

Awesome. I saw Alex retweet (I think) someone saying that Microsoft and Sony are like divorced parents fighting for the affection of their child. Microsoft tries to lay down the law while Sony buys us some beer and pot. (While I do not smoke pot, I totally get the sentiment).

I believed in Sony and I'm so glad they delivered far beyond most people's expectations. Even the Giantbomb crew all thought Sony would end up with the same used game policies as Microsoft. Instead Sony went full good guy mode this generation, catering to the customer in every way as Microsoft spat on us.

No used game restrictions, no ridiculous online verifications, open and encouraging platform for indie developers, and they undercut a system which is weaker than their own by $100. Fuck yea Sony, manning up and putting the customers first, not the greedy publishers like EA trying to push crazy DRM on console disc games. They did everything right and knocked it out of the park, Microsofts conference had polite clapping and silence... Sony had full on standing ovations and cheers of joy and appreciation, you can't beat that.

I have jumped ship on consoles 3 years ago. If I buy one I will get the PS4, most everything else will be on PC first for me.

Well guess I know which next gen console I'll be looking into. $400 was really the max I was really willing to pay for a console anyway, and I really need to be able to buy used games, I tend to buy them after they are like a year or two old too, so I try to wait until the price is rock bottom. (or at least wait for a awesome sale.) XBO is just a big mismatch for me, compared to PS4.

Too bad that next gen I'm completely locked out of console multiplayer. (didn't buy XBL Gold in current gen, not going to buy PS+ in next gen.) Guess it's PC multiplayer for me. :/ Eh, I hardly play multiplayer anyway.

Hmm, sooo.....I guess the big question now is, how are the big publishers going to retaliate against Sony and us bargain hunters. If they retaliate at all.

Never had a Playstation console... always been a Nintendo/Microsoft guy. I'm getting the Playstation 4. Not because it's cheaper, not because of any particular exclusive, but strictly because it respects me as a consumer. Fuck Microsoft. I'm a PS4/Wii U guy now.

Kind of reverse of the 360/PS3 launch, where a 20gb 360 cost $300 and 20gb PS3 cost $500. Lately I've been only playing games on PC and previous gen handhelds (PSP3k and DSxl), and am probably going to wait until price drops anyways to get a next gen console (Way too big of a backlog). I've never bought a console at any launch, but if I was going to, PS4 would probably be my choice, despite never having really played much on a PS3

@thatdutchguy: Also PS+ is only $50, not $60. So if you want to play online PS4 is $110 cheaper.

I've got an uneasy feeling about all this. Don't forget, Sony is the company that took a $200 loss on every console sold last generation, pretty much entirely so that they could push Blu-ray, and ensure that the region free alternative of HD-DVD was successfully killed. All in the name of locking down and protecting content.

This seems really, really suspicious.
