Sony's Cloud Gaming Service Is PlayStation Now [UPDATED]

Service heads into beta this month, and fully debuts in the summer.

Update: Sony is not willing to comment on the subscription model at this time, and would not tell me if PlayStation Plus users will automatically gain access.

"We have nothing to announce at this point in time," said a company spokesperson.

--

Sony has previously teased a streaming gaming service using the Gaikai technology it acquired in 2012, and now we know what the company has planned. It's called PlayStation Now, and it was just announced at CES.

(Wait, when did CES become relevant for games again?)

PlayStation Now is a subscription-based service (it's unclear if PlayStation Plus subscribers will have to pay an additional fee, but it seems likely) that will give players access to PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 games. Besides streaming games to PlayStation 4 and Vita, it will also stream to non-PlayStation devices, including phones and tablets.

In addition to a subscription, players will be able to rent games on a per title basis.

PlayStation Now will enter into beta in the United States this month, and rolls out everywhere this summer.

@grantheaslip: Yeah I think you're right. For certain RPGs with time based combat (Final Fantasy XIII) this system would probably not be ideal or even a good way to play. Other games would work well though, like Resonance of Fate.

This could be an awesome thing for Vita owners if it works as advertised :). Now the Vita just needs a UI overhaul...

@mooseymcman: I think you are right.

I also think that latency issues will make it really bad outside the US.

I wonder if there will be a way for people to use this to freely access games that they bought previously on PSN?

kinda doubt it as streaming costs them money

I have an half answer to that: games which you have bought in physical form won't be given to you for free in Playstation Now.

I'm interested in the support on phones and tablets, but I wonder if they are smart enough to remember that their controllers are Bluetooth and work on those devices? I'd love to play Playstation stuff on my phone, but without controller support it would be trash.

Wow that is quite compelling so long as they let you download and keep copies of your games.

The second my PS4 was plugged in my PS3 went back into its box so I can't wait to try this.

I missed out on a lot of AAA games on the PS3 that I would love to have the chance to try with this service.

If this works it could be a nail in the coffin for used games sales, I think I read that GameStop shares dropped whe the news came out.

PlayStationNow definitely feels like the Netflix of console gaming.

I saw on The Verge that you need to use a Dualshock 3 to play PS3 games on other devices. I really hope that doesn't mean that I need to do that when streaming a ps3 game to the ps4. That would suck. Dualshock 4 4 life.
