Sony Unveils First PlayStation Certified Tablet [Updated]

Owners to have access to a lineup of original PlayStation games later this year.

UPDATE: I've dropped an image of Crash Bandicoot running on the tablet, courtesy of Engadget.

Soon, you'll have the ability to download original PlayStation games on a Sony-branded tablet. No, I'm not sure anyone was asking for complicated controller-based games to be mapped to a touch screen, but my own snark aside, Sony revealed the first PlayStation Certified tablet at an event in Japan tonight.

Ridge Racer advocate and PlayStation lead executive Kaz Hirai was on-hand to help unveil Sony's devices. There are actually two tablets coming from Sony sometime in fall 2011, S1 and S2. Both have tentative codenames, with the former designed for home use ("rich media entertainment," says the press release), the other meant for on-the-go experiences ("mobile communication and entertainment").

The current look of the two tablets. It's not common for tablets to have split-screens.

== TEASER ==The press release doesn't provide any indication of the lineup of original PlayStation games, only mentioning consumers will have access to "high quality first generation PlayStation titles," but games like Crash Bandicoot have already launched on other PlayStation Certified phones featuring Android.

Based on Google's Android 3.0 operating system, Sony's S1 features a 9.4-inch display, while the S2 sports two 5.5-inch displays. Both can grab onto local Wi-Fi points and access 3G and 4G networks.

No pricing information is available yet for either tablet.

I'm still trying to figure out how original PlayStation games would be any fun with touch, though.

I dont know what to think, i personally think this wont sell well. They want to emulate Apples success with the Ipad, and fair enough, hats of to them, its a lucrative market. but really?

whats the major selling point here? that it can play PS1 games? you could do that with an Ipad....with a emulator (maybe not legal but :P)

its basically taking the middle ground, between a PSP and a fully fledged console i.e. PS3...i suppose theres people who would embrace the idea...but the market is already saturated with crappy tablets, i suppose the brand name will make it sell.

So PSN is shut down and your next announcement is a new tablet that will probably cost more than the PS3 did when it first came out?? WINNING!!!

Perfectly legal.  Emulators have been proven in court to be completely  legal when built the right way, and there's an DMCA exception for jailbreaking devices like the ipad.  Of course that's assuming you own the games.

Best part about doing things that way?  You already own the game and have the disk, so all you have to do is rip the iso off the disk to play it.  With Sony's tablet, you'll most likely have to pay for it again.

Not that I'm too excited about either method.  How those shoulder buttons would be anything other than end up throwing the device across the room aggravating I don't know.

You'd think Sony would try and get one thing right before moving on to the next. Oh well, I think Sony loves being a follower in every market they enter.

The loudest MEH I can muster. No thanks. If I want to play PlayStation original games, I'll just pop them into my still-working PS2.

Doesn't anybody who wants a tablet have one by now? I don't think that the ability to play old games on a touch screen is really a selling point, especially when other tablets have lots of games made specifically for them. DO NOT MOTHERFUCKING WANT.

When is Sony going to figure out that they aren't Nintendo and they can't get away with just selling people the same games over and over on different devices?

That said, this looks neat like the Xperia Play looked neat, but we'll see how well it actually does. I love the idea of PS Certified phones, I think Sony is realizing that smartphones are slowly replacing handheld game platforms, but they have to put good content on the things if they want them to sell. PS1 games just aren't going to cut it.

Wow, I didn't really expect that. I like the idea, but seeing those on-screen controls for Crash just reminded me how much I hate playing fake-buttons-on-screen games on my iPad.

Sony must be making it their mission to completely invalidate the PlayStation brand.

I'll ask.

This...wait, why? I don't get it. You can play those on a PSP with real controls, or better on your PS3. What is the benefit here?

I'll go with the consensus here and admit that it does look pretty cool. But I just can't stand the lack of feedback concerning touch screen controls.

I do not want to play games without tactile feedback and with my own hands obscuring the playingfield.
I sometimes buy retro classics like Street Fighter II, Secret of Mana and Phantasy Star II on the iPhone store and every time I get frustrated with the controls almost immediately.

Holy crap! This is new, who would think to have a handheld with 2 screens that folds inward link a clam shell and plays games with a touch screen! Then it has a camera on it to boot! They gain points for originality there, I'll say that much. [/sarcasm]

It would be great if it had all the classic RPGs that were on the Playstation. PS1 was the all time great system for JRPGs. Which is why it is probably my all time favorite console.
