Sony Unveils "Next Generation Portable" In Japan

It doesn't have a real name, but it's heading to store shelves this holiday season.

Two analog sticks, a touch screen, a touch-sensitive back, two cameras, tilt controls... just about everything we've heard lately about Sony's next portable gaming platform has turned out to be true according to reports from the PlayStation Meeting 2011, which took place in Japan on Thursday afternoon, according to their crazy, futuristic clocks.

No Caption Provided
As expected, Sony is touting the platform's power, claiming that it's as powerful as the PlayStation 3. Also, Sony isn't referring to it as the PSP2. Rather, they're simply calling it by the non-final name of "Next Generation Portable." Well, anything that reminds me of the Neo Geo Pocket can't be all bad, I guess.

Games from big Sony franchises like Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance have been confirmed to appear on the platform, and Hideo Kojima was on hand to show off a brief, Metal Gear-related trailer. Epic's Tim Sweeney took the stage to show a live demo of the Unreal Engine running on the platform, and Activision's Phillip Earl announced an unnamed Call of Duty game for the device.

@redskineer:
Sony loves to overprice its products so I wouldn't count on it being much cheaper than an iPad. Also concidering that the 3DS costs 250 dollars and the hardware of the NGP is a lot more expensive I'd at least double that price. But who knows maybe Sony will finally surprise us in a good way...

I'm pretty curious what purpose the touchpad on the back will serve when it comes to playing games on the NGP.

Exactly what I think of portable gaming . But an Online FPS on the go would be awesome.

Looks incredible, although I'm not so sure about the back touch pad.  Seems superfluous, but we'll see what devs come up with.

yeah dude seriously i dont even like 3d in movie theaters and the 3d on the 3ds seems kinda sketchy.

i think i might be more excited for this than the 3ds at this point.  i mean these are just the types of games that i like.

As long as I can get a wi-fi version and it doesn't become a mini-PS3 I'm cool with it.  The PSP failed because it never had an identity until sales died off enough to make it become the odd RPG system.

I do most of my gaming on my PC, but sometimes when I want a more console-y style game I bust out my psp. I will most definitely be in line to get one of these mean motorscooters.

I  simply can't justify a handheld gaming device that is not also a phone and I think I am far from being alone on this. That said, this is a pretty amazing device.

I think they always set that price when the actual price hasn't been decided yet.

Why would you want yet another phone? Isn't it hard enough to stay out of contact with people as it is?

I'm willing to bet Sony is going to clear a lot of obstacles to development and take a shot at the App Store. If they can make an alternate revenue stream like that work, then they can price this thing close to the 3DS and cheaper than a lot of the touch devices. bridging the casual and core markets. Then again, I may be giving them more credit than they deserve.

If this hits at a 299 base model than I'm in at launch. But I think if it can still be under the price of an IPAD, it'll still sell well.

Looks pretty decent, and definitely a lot more refined than the older version of the Sony Handhelds. Just trying to decide whether there's a need for it in the market though?

Wonder how many bundles and versions Sony will put out within a year of this being out?  Im intrigued.  Start saving now and price won't matter too much by the time it comes out.  If it interacts with the PS3 games and as a bluray extension device, instant buy.

Supposedly there is gonna be a model with and without 3g. If so the NGP that is wi-fi only will more than likely be cheaper than the 3g... kinda like the ipad i guess.

A couple of developers (see: Activision and Epic) have stated that they'd like to have the NGP and PS3 versions of games play together. That would be really cool if while on the go you could play actual games with PSN friends and carry over saves/trophies/ranking to the home version when you get home.

I still need to see a decent price, $300-350 ideally, before I get seriously interested. As of right now though, this is looking like my next handheld console, and I think this is exactly what portable gaming needed too, tonnes of power, crazy inputs, potentially interesting social networking and connection to home consoles. Not to mention 99.99% of phone (iPhone and Android) based games are absolute garbage. Both the 3DS and NGP bring back the excitement of handheld gaming, for myself at least.

Not only that, but you can touch it from the front and behind. And also take dickpix with a front and rear camera. "

So Brett Favre already has preorder one then?

I agree John. Like a lot of us I got the iPhone app bug about year ago,but that flame burned out quick. Quirky only lasts so long. For the games I enjoy most, you simply must have some kind of thumbpad and button layout as your basis for interaction. Without tactile feedback, you're just shooting in the dark.

If you disagree I challenge you to play the recently released R-Type on the TurboGrafx-16 GameBox app. Love me some R-Type - but that ain't happenin'!

They need to make PSN games work the same as ipod/ipad apps do. I want to play Wipeout HD and Mass Effect 2 and have it work on both systems along with my saves and trophies always being linked between the to. If SONY did this they would already have loads of games at launch. *drool at the thought.*

I'm taking the cautious approach with both the 3DS and NGP. Going to wait a year or so until they start making bundles. The PSP had some great games but it died early. Hopefully the lack of UMD will keep the NGP afloat.

If the games are awesome I will buy one. I expect the price to be $349 but if we're lucky Sony will release at the same price as the 3DS or just slightly higher (read: $299).

The device's design has grown on me and it is certainly impressive. I can't wait to see more games unveiled at E3 later this year.

I know If they made it a game system and a phone, it would be good at neither, but I really loved my Sony Ericsson W810i phone, and the thought of it successfully mating with a PSP is one of the few things that might tear me away from my iPhone. Oh well.
