Sony Unveils "Next Generation Portable" In Japan

It doesn't have a real name, but it's heading to store shelves this holiday season.

Two analog sticks, a touch screen, a touch-sensitive back, two cameras, tilt controls... just about everything we've heard lately about Sony's next portable gaming platform has turned out to be true according to reports from the PlayStation Meeting 2011, which took place in Japan on Thursday afternoon, according to their crazy, futuristic clocks.

No Caption Provided
As expected, Sony is touting the platform's power, claiming that it's as powerful as the PlayStation 3. Also, Sony isn't referring to it as the PSP2. Rather, they're simply calling it by the non-final name of "Next Generation Portable." Well, anything that reminds me of the Neo Geo Pocket can't be all bad, I guess.

Games from big Sony franchises like Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance have been confirmed to appear on the platform, and Hideo Kojima was on hand to show off a brief, Metal Gear-related trailer. Epic's Tim Sweeney took the stage to show a live demo of the Unreal Engine running on the platform, and Activision's Phillip Earl announced an unnamed Call of Duty game for the device.

Hmmm, I guess that PSP Go is a "no go" after all, now they came up with this. an ordinary SD memory card can store than 16GB, which is a better form of storage media compared to an UMD disc IMO.

At this point, I'd more be curious about when the release date is. Given it doesn't appear to use an in-house processor, and given the arms race (no pun intended) in the smartphone arena, this might well be outclassed by the time it comes out.

I actually  think this looks pretty sweet. But for me to buy it its gonna need some RPGs. The only reason and almost the only thing I played on my PSP was RPGs. It would be sad not to see a bunch on there especially since a lot of RPGs only come out on handhelds now only a few on consoles now a days.

It's not possible for it to be as powerful as the PS3 and be portable. Technology hasn't gotten that far yet. It would need a huge power supply and plug into the wall. It would also get too hot to hold onto while playing.
