Starbreeze Isn’t Making the New Riddick Game

If Vin Diesel has assembled a new team, it's truly a new team.

News spread today about a new Riddick game, thanks to some offhand comments by actor Vin Diesel to Screen Crush.

“My diehard gamers want Tigon to deliver the third chapter in the Riddick game[s],” said Diesel, “and we just over the past couple of months, just this year, [we] reassembled that team from Starbreeze that brought Escape from Butcher Bay to create the third game.”

Diesel did not elaborate, but I can confirm Starbreeze is not making this new Riddick game. The current iteration of Starbreeze, high off the release of the emotionally charged Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, told me it’s not involved.

This makes sense, as many of the ex-Riddick developers left Starbreeze to form MachineGames, which is currently working on Wolfenstein: The New Order for id Software. Given that MachineGames is wholly owned by id Software’s parent company, ZeniMax, it seems unlikely MachineGames is creating this third Riddick game. Who, then, is developing the next Riddick?

Diesel started his own game company, Tigon Studios, back in 2002. It was responsible for collaborating to create the acclaimed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay with Starbreeze, the less acclaimed Wheelman, and a disappointing Riddick follow-up, Assault on Dark Athena. Tigon Studios tried to get many games off the ground but none materialized, and the company has been radio silent the last several years.

My attempts to contact Tigon Studios went awry. The company’s website, which hasn’t been updated in years, lists only a contact email address that resulted in my inquiry bouncing back.

Why does Patrick calls himself Scoops? Sounds like a name you'd give a to a dog.

Man, I really should play that first Riddick game.

Just get Dark Athena, it comes with a better version of Butcher Bay. I played it like two years ago and I think it still holds up.

I've been tempted to get into the games since people keep talking about how Escape from Butcher Bay has some of the best hand to hand combat. Didn't they remake it and released it with Assault on Dark Athena? If so, which one should I get?

Butcher Bay was totally fine, Dark Athena dragged on and on. However I'm still curious what the other one turns into.

Personally I would Get dark Athena Two games for the price of one, and yes Butcher bay was updated for the dark Athena Release so your getting a better version of that game

It's a nickname. Someone else gave it to him. Duh?

Assault on Dark Athena was good until you left the ship and went on to find out Riddick didn't leave an innocent kid to die after all, which made the story far less cool.

EDIT: Really, AODA is well worth playing. The atmosphere, actor performances, and (for the first two thirds) the gameplay are still as ON POINT as in Butcher Bay.

AODA is actually really good. Yeah, the Butcher Bay part is better, but the whole package is well worth checking out.

Assault on Dark Athena is totally worth playing, just saying. What else are you going to play if you want First Person Stealth? Thief 1 and 2 again? C'mon. There's not as much free roam, but the gameplay is still top notch and the new weapons like the Ulaks are great. There's more of a Predator feel as you're stalking the people of the ship.

@assinass: Dishonored comes to mind. Or even Skyrim. I play that game pure stealth.

But I get what you're saying. It's a specific interest of some people I'm sure, but I'm also fine with third person stealth.
